Injection of Newtonian crystal-free magmas into a partially crystallised host which may exhibit non-Newtonian properties produces magmatic structures such as pipes, syn-plutonic dikes or dendritic structures. Field relationships between the structure and the host rock commonly indicate what the rheological contrasts during the injection were. The manner in which a magma deforms in response to injection is mainly linked to crystal content and strain rate (i.e., injection rate). Three kinds of behaviour can be distinguished: (1) Newtonian at low crystal contents; (2) Non-Newtonian at intermediate (40–60%) crystal contents, or at high crystal contents if the strain rate is small; and (3) brittle failure at high crystal content or strain rates.Petrologic observations indicate that injection can take place when the host magma still behaves as a fluid. To investigate the physics of the injection process we review the results of injection experiments in non-Newtonian fluids. These experiments were performed to study viscous fingering in 2-D Hele Shaw cells. They provide the first step to establishing the main non-Newtonian effects during the formation of interfacial instabilities arising when a Newtonian fluid is injected into a more viscous fluid or paste. The qualitative comparison of the morphological features of the interfaces between the fluids in the experiments with those in nature suggests that, in magmas, irregularities of the interfaces (dikes and dendrites) result from non-Newtonian properties of the host. We conclude that fluid-like deformation, rather than brittle behaviour of the host, during injection is likely to produce the general features observed on the field. Cooling effects might be responsible for the widespread phenomenon of fragmentation. We emphasise that the main effect of non-Newtonian properties in partially crystallised magmas is to generate strongly heterogeneous media producing discontinuities which could explain the main morphological features of syn-plutonic injection structures. 相似文献

On the basic of selective extractions, loosely sorbed phosphorus (ADS-P) has been shown to constitute much of the total phosphorus in the P-rich near-surface sediments of Lake Søbygaard, Denmark. The concentrations of ADS-P are seasonally variable, ranging from 0.2 mg Pg?1 DW in the winter to more than 2 mg Pg?1 DW in the summer. The variations can be observed as deep as 10 cm into the sediment but are most pronounced in the upper few centimeters. During the summer, lake and pore water pH levels are very high, and photosynthetic activity causes elevation to pH 10–11 in the lake. Laboratory experiments demonstrated a strong association between ADS-P and high pore water pH. It is likely that Lake Søbygaard represents an extreme example of pH control on sediment/water phosphorus equilibria in which high concentrations of internal ADS-P contribute significantly to the total P load of the Lake. 相似文献

A study is reported of air pollution episodes in the Broye valley, a rural area of Switzerland located to the north-east of the city of Lausanne, in which a number of industrial sources of SO2 are located. The study comprises numerical simulations of regional-scale meteorology, local plume behavior, as well as a wind tunnel investigation of the same region in order to ascertain the relative advantages and disadvantages of numerical and physical modeling.
In situ data are available for certain episodes which occured during a very cold period in the winter of 1985, allowing intercomparisons to be made between nature and models. Furthermore, a significant effort undertaken by cantonal authorities has led to the setting up of a detailed emission inventory, which includes industry, individual domestic heating and traffic. Such an inventory has proved invaluable in imposing source terms in the models. 相似文献

A well-developed subglacial drainage system consisting of large cavities developed in the lee of bedrock steps connected together by a network of Nye channels is exposed on an area of recently deglaciated limestone bedrock in front of Glacier de Tsanfleuron, Switzerland. This system covers some 51 per cent of the bedrock surface area, and is believed to have transported the bulk of supraglacially-derived meltwaters through the glacier. Using the cavity hydraulics model of Kamb (1987), it is shown that the geometry of the system rendered it stable against collapse by meltback of channel roofs into a tunnel-dominated system. For likely combinations of glacier geometry and meltwater discharge, the steady state water pressure in this system would have been only a small fraction of that required for flotation, and for discharges of less than about 0·5–5 m3 s?1 water would have flowed at atmospheric pressure. The system appears to have adjusted to varying discharges by a combination of varying water pressure and changing the total cross-sectional area of flow by altering the number of active channels connecting cavities. Glacier sliding velocity would have been independent of meltwater discharge for discharges at which water flowed at atmospheric pressure, but would have risen with increasing discharge for higher flows. Velocities on the order of 0·1 m d?1 are predicted for a realistic range of discharges and effective pressures, and these are believed to be plausible. Episodes of enhanced sliding in glaciers with similar drainage systems could be triggered by a rise in meltwater discharge across the threshold between flows at atmospheric pressure and flow under pressure from the glacier. 相似文献

Several numerical experiments have been undertaken with a three-dimensional mesoscale model in order to determine to what extent a water surface such as a lake can influence mesoscale flow patterns.It is shown that the influence of the lake is important when cumulus clouds are present. These clouds, generated by evaporation from the water surface are small but induce significant secondary circulations which disrupt the flow field on the mesoscale.Artificial suppression of cloud activity results in a situation where the lake exerts little influence on the atmospheric environment in comparison to the control experiment where the body of water is absent. Atmospheric stability controls the intensity of perturbations to the mean flow when clouds are present.The study is of interest when modeling a number of complex phenomena simultaneously; the results shown here indicate that under certain stability conditions, a small lake can be ignored as to its dynamic and thermodynamic influence on atmospheric processes, thus leading to a neglect of a number of equations taking into account moisture terms explicitly. 相似文献

Experimental and analytical studies were conducted to determine dynamic soil–structure interaction characteristics of a single-span, prestressed-concrete bridge with monolithic abutments supported by spread footings. The experimental programme, consisting of harmonic forced vibration excitation of the bridge in the transverse and longitudinal directions, revealed the presence of four modes in the frequency band, 0 to 11 Hz, and the onset of a fifth mode at 14 Hz, the highest frequency attained during the tests. The fundamental mode at 4.7 Hz was the primary longitudinal bending mode of the deck and had a relatively low damping ratio (ζ1), that was approximately 0.025 of critical. The second and third modes at 6.4 Hz and 8.2 Hz were the primary twisting modes of the deck which involved substantial transverse rocking, transverse translation and torsion of the footings. As expected, the damping ratios associated with these two modes, ζ2 = 0.035 and ζ3 = 0.15, were directly related to the relative amounts of deck and footing motion. The fourth mode at 10.6 Hz was the second twisting mode of the deck and involved relatively little motion of the footings and abutment walls, which was consistent with the low damping, ζ4 = 0.02, observed in this mode. The response data at 14 Hz suggested that the fifth mode beyond this frequency was the second longitudinal bending mode of the deck involving longitudinal translation and bending of the abutment walls. A three-dimensional finite element model of the bridge, with Winkler springs attached to the footings and abutment walls to represent the soil–structure interaction, was able to reproduce the experimental data (natural frequencies, mode shapes and bridge response) reasonably well. Although the stiffnesses assigned to the Winkler springs were based largely on the application of a form of Rayleigh's principle to the experimental data, these stiffnesses were similar to theoretical foundation stiffnesses of the same size footings on a linearly elastic half space and theoretical lateral stiffnesses of a rigid retaining wall against a linearly elastic backfill. 相似文献

The Kinabalu batholith is a late Neogene granitoid in northwestern Sabah (East Malaysia) apparently marking the locus at which subducted South China Basin lithosphere interacted with roots of the northern Sabah collision suture. The exposed batholith comprises a relatively small core of biotite quartz monzodiorite (BQM) grading out to dominant hornblende quartz monzonite (HQM). Both lithologies contain mafic igneous and metasedimentary inclusions and are cut by late-stage aplite dikes. Major element data indicate the BQM (K2O/Na2O ratios ranging 0.72–1.03) represents a low-K type while HQM (K2O/Na2O ratios ranging 1.35–5.58) is a distinct high-K type. Magmaphile element distributions support this distinction, HQM showing higher K, Rb, LREE and lower Ta and Nb contents than BQM, indicating the more extensive interaction of HQM with sial. Least-squares mass balance models suggest that HQM evolved through the combined effects of fractional crystallization and crustal assimilation while BQM was dominated by fractional crystallization. However, similar plagioclase zoning patterns in both lithologies suggest they are comagmatic rather than generated by melting of separate sources. It is concluded that low-K type melts, formed by subduction-induced remelting of underplated lower crust, underwent high pressure sialic contamination with development of high-K character. These provided access to later-formed low-K melts which were less contaminated and consolidated to form the pluton core. The unusual zonation from inner low-K to outer high-K type compositions may indicate that the cessation of subduction prevented upward migration of the melting anomaly and thermal maturation of the pluton. 相似文献
