The mean transmission properties of a fault with imperfect facial contact   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A model of a fault where the two faces do not exactly conform is characterized by a distribution of approximately circular contacts; elsewhere, the faces are stress-free. This contrasts with most earlier models, which have assumed the contact geometry to be equivalent to a plane distribution of approximately circular cracks. The contact regions in the present model are taken to be sparsely distributed, and averaged interface conditions are derived that are accurate to second order. At lowest order they agree with established formulae for the normal stiffness of non-conforming surfaces. These averaged, or mean, conditions are expected to hold at wavelengths long compared with the radii and spacing distance of the contact points. Unsurprisingly, they are equivalent to the continuity conditions for a thin elastic layer whose properties are given here in terms of the parameters of the contact surface.  相似文献

We demonstrate several events where an eruptive flare close to the limb gave rise to a transient coronal streamer visible in X-rays in Yohkoh SXT images, and analyze one of these events, on 28–29 October 1992, in detail. A coronal helmet streamer began to appear 2 hours after the flare, high above rising post-flare loops; the streamer became progressively narrower, reaching its minimum width 7–12 hours after the flare, and widened again thereafter, until it eventually disappeared. Several other events behaved in a similar way. We suggest that the minimum width indicates the time when the streamer became fully developed. All the time the temperature in the helmet streamer structure was decreasing, which can explain the subsequent fictitious widening of the X-ray streamer. It is suggested that we may see here two systems of reconnection on widely different altitudes, one giving rise to the post-flare loops while the other creates (or re-forms) the coronal helmet streamer. A similar interpretation was suggested in 1990 by Kopp and Polettofor post-flare giant arches observed on board the SMM; indeed, there are some similarities between these post-flare helmet streamers and giant arches and, with the low spatial resolution of SMM instruments, it is possible that some helmet streamers could have been considered to be a kind of a giant arch.  相似文献

We simultaneously solve the equations of radiative transfer and statistical equilibrium for a model hydrogen atom including Lyman-, Lyman-, Balmer- and the Lyman, Balmer and Paschen continua. The model atmospheres we use are the results of Nakagawa et al. (1973) for a kinematic model of the chromospheric solar flare.We find that the models adequately predict the total intensity of B, its wing broadening, the presence of a red-shifted wing, the maximum electron density, the total line-of-sight second-level population and the narrowness in height of the B emitting region. The profile of B is strongly self-reversed, however, and agrees with observations only in the presence of 40–70 km s–1 macroturbulent motion.We find that Nakagawa et al. (1973) seriously overestimate the radiative loss function, which will have a large effect on their models. Effective-medium theories for fluid-saturated materials with aligned cracks   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
There is general agreement between different theories giving expressions for the overall properties of materials with dry, aligned cracks if the number density of cracks is small. There is also very fair agreement for fluid-filled isolated cracks. However, there are considerable differences between two separate theories for fluid-filled cracks with equant porosity. Comparison with recently published experimental data on synthetic sandstones gives a good fit with theory for dry samples. However, although the crack number density in the laboratory sample is such that first-order theory is unlikely to apply, expressions correct to second order (in the number density) provide a worse fit. It also appears that the ratio of wavelength to crack size is not sufficiently great for any detailed comparison with effective-medium theories, which are valid only when this ratio is large. The data show dispersion effects for dry cracks and scattering, neither of which will occur at sufficiently long wavelengths. Data from the water-saturated samples indicate that the effect of equant porosity is significant, although the two theories differ strongly as to just how significant. Once again, and in spite of the reservations mentioned above, a reasonable fit between theory and observation can be shown.  相似文献

In 1977 and 1981 a hydrothermal plume was detected at the East Pacific Rise (EPR) near 8°45′N and at MANOP Site M, 25 km east of the EPR, by anomalous222Rn and Mn concentrations. In 1981, samples were also taken for210Pb,210Po and226Ra analyses to determine if enhanced scavenging of these elements occurred in the plume. At both the ridge crest and at Site M, the 210Pb/226Ra ratios range from 0.09 to 0.35, which are among the lowest values ever measured. It appears that removal of the210Pb is occurring by processes operating at or near the seafloor. There is also significant 210Po/210Pb disequilibrium at both locations, which appears to increase away from the seafloor towards the plume (as indicated by elevated Mn concentrations). An in-situ water column scavenging process is suggested by correlation of [210Pb-210Po] and Mn concentrations in the plume. The residence time of the210Po is only about 1 year, which is close to its residence time in surface waters but quite short compared to typical deep sea values. Thus rapid scavenging of the polonium in the plume and relatively rapid settling of particles from the plume is suggested.  相似文献

A study of Halodule wrightii in a shallow subtropical Texas lagoon was performed to obtain seasonal data on its physiological ecology. Leaf production and biomass dynamics of H. wrightii were intensively monitored along with the underwater light environment at a 1.2-m depth study site over a 21-month period from June 1995 to February 1997. The annual photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) flux of 6,764 mol m−2 year−1 was more than twice as high as 2,400 mol m−2 year−1, the minimum annual PAR required for maintenance of growth. As light intensity declined, blade chlorophyll a/b ratios increased suggesting that the plants were photo-adapting. Seasonal trends were evident in shoot growth and biomass. Compared to other Halodule populations in Texas, H. wrightii in LLM displayed slow growth and low biomass, high leaf tissue N content, and low C/N ratio but high N/P ratio of 38 suggesting that the plants were phosphorus-limited.  相似文献

This review surveys hard X-ray emissions of non-thermal electrons in the solar corona. These electrons originate in flares and flare-related processes. Hard X-ray emission is the most direct diagnostic of electron presence in the corona, and such observations provide quantitative determinations of the total energy in the non-thermal electrons. The most intense flare emissions are generally observed from the chromosphere at footpoints of magnetic loops. Over the years, however, many observations of hard X-ray and even γ-ray emission directly from the corona have also been reported. These coronal sources are of particular interest as they occur closest to where the electron acceleration is thought to occur. Prior to the actual direct imaging observations, disk occultation was usually required to study coronal sources, resulting in limited physical information. Now RHESSI has given us a systematic view of coronal sources that combines high spatial and spectral resolution with broad energy coverage and high sensitivity. Despite the low density and hence low bremsstrahlung efficiency of the corona, we now detect coronal hard X-ray emissions from sources in all phases of solar flares. Because the physical conditions in such sources may differ substantially from those of the usual “footpoint” emission regions, we take the opportunity to revisit the physics of hard X-radiation and relevant theories of particle acceleration.  相似文献
