This study documented the spatial and temporal variability of outflow from a forested hillslope segment during snowmelt at a small mountain catchment in south coastal British Columbia, Canada. A pit 5 m wide was established just upslope from the stream channel. Outflow from the organic horizon was intercepted and measured by a single trough, and outflow from the mineral horizons was measured separately for three adjacent sections. Throughflow exhibited non‐steady‐state behaviour involving shifting allocations of flow amongst different sections of the outflow pit, as well as threshold effects and hysteresis in the relationship between pit outflow and water table elevation. Most of the pit outflow originated from the mineral horizons, indicating that throughflow was the dominant pathway by which water was delivered to the stream channel. Direct precipitation and snowmelt onto near‐stream saturated areas can account for less than 20% of the total outflow from the hillslope segment. Throughflow from the mineral sections consistently peaked either at the same time as or earlier than stream flow from the 150‐ha catchment during diurnal snowmelt cycles, indicating that throughflow appears to respond rapidly enough to contribute to snowmelt‐induced peak stream flow. Subphotospheric current systems inferred from recent vector magnetograph observations (e.g. Gary et al., 1987) imply the existence of electric currents penetrating the photosphere and thus flowing deep in the solar convection zone. These currents presumably originate in an internal dynamo that supplies the observed photospheric magnetic fields through the buoyant motions of the initially deeply-buried flux tubes. The coronal fields resulting from this process therefore must carry slowly-varying currents driven by emf's remote from the surface. These currents may then drive solar-flare energy release. This paper discusses the consequences of such a deep origin of the coronal parallel currents. Simple estimates for a large active region suggest a mean current-closure depth 10,000 km, with a subphotospheric inductance 100 H and a subphotospheric stored energy 1033 ergs.  相似文献

We examine the optical emission-line properties of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) selected from two large, homogeneous data sets. The first is the X-ray selected National Optical Astronomy Observatory Fundamental Plane Survey (NFPS), and the second is the C4 catalogue of optically selected clusters built from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3 (SDSS DR3). Our goal is to better understand the optical line emission in BCGs with respect to properties of the galaxy and the host cluster. Throughout the analysis we compare the line emission of the BCGs to that of a control sample made of the other bright galaxies near the cluster centre. Overall, both the NFPS and SDSS show a modest fraction of BCGs with emission lines (∼15 per cent). No trend in the fraction of emitting BCGs as a function of galaxy mass or cluster velocity dispersion is found. However, we find that, for those BCGs found in cooling flow clusters,  71+9−14  have optical emission. Furthermore, if we consider only BCGs within 50 kpc of the X-ray centre of a cooling flow cluster, the emission-line fraction rises further to  100+0−15  per cent. Excluding the cooling flow clusters, only ∼10 per cent of BCGs are line emitting, comparable to the control sample of galaxies. We show that the physical origin of the emission-line activity varies: in some cases it has LINER-like line ratios, whereas in others it is a composite of star-formation and LINER-like activity. We conclude that the presence of emission lines in BCGs is directly related to the cooling of X-ray gas at the cluster centre.  相似文献

Iron coordination and redox reactions in synthetic and coastal seawater were investigated at nanomolar concentrations using 59Fe radiometry and ion-pair solvent extraction of iron chelated by sulfoxine (8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonate) and BPDS (bathophenanthroline disulfonate). Using sulfoxine, we determined the rate at which the monomeric Fe(III) hydroxide species present in seawater of pH 8 are complexed by the microbial siderophore deferriferrioxamine B and the synthetic chelator EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid). Forward rate constants of 2 × 106M−1s−1 and 20 M−1s−1, respectively, were obtained. The kinetics of these reactions have not been measured previously at pH values near that of seawater. Conditional equilibrium constants measured for the Fe(III)-EDTA system are consistent with published stability constants for EDTA complexes and for Fe(III) hydrolytic equilibria minus the neutral Fe(OH)3o species, suggesting it is not quantitatively significant near pH 8. Commercial humic acid was found to have sufficient affinity for iron to compete with Fe(III) hydrolysis in seawater, and limited evidence was obtained for an interaction with dissolved organic matter in coastal seawater.In our investigations of redox reactions using BPDS to trap Fe(II) produced in the medium, we observed enhanced photoreduction of Fe(III) by humic acid as well as reduction induced by solutes released from phytoplankton in seawater of pH 8. Although the method is sensitive enough to work at near-oceanic levels of iron, the difficulty in distinguishing Fe(II) generated by Fe(III)-BPDS interactions from Fe(II) produced by other means limits its utility. This analytical ambiguity may be generalizable to other methods which measure ferrous iron in seawater using Fe(II)-specific ligands.  相似文献

Summary. A search of seismograms recorded at the Warramunga seismic array (WRA) from events occurring below the Izu-Bonin Islands shows an arrival on some, but not all, of the records, with an onset at 25–30 s after P , which is not predicted by the standard travel-time tables. The slowness and azimuth of the phase show that it is generated almost in line with P , and the variation of arrival time with the hypocentral depth of the earthquake indicates that its origin lies on the receiver side of the source. It appears, in fact, to be an S to P conversion at a depth of 650–700 km, which is seen only when the receiver is close to a node of the P radiation pattern and an antinode for S so that its amplitude compared with that of P is at a maximum.
Finally, the duration of the phase indicates that it is not simply a refracted wave, but that it has a coda of scattered arrivals from lateral heterogeneity in the neighbourhood of 650 km below the Izu-Bonin Islands.  相似文献
