Biofilms on submerged surfaces are important in determining larval settlement of most marine benthic invertebrates. We investigated if exposure of biofilms to hypoxia would alter the larval settlement pattern and result in a shift in benthic invertebrate community structure in the field. Biofilms were first exposed to hypoxia or normoxia in laboratory microcosms for 7 days, and then deployed in the field for another 7 days to allow for larval settlement and recruitment to occur. Using terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism of the 16S rRNA gene, this study showed that hypoxia altered the biofilm bacterial community composition, and the difference between the hypoxic and normoxic treatments increased with the time of exposure period. This study also demonstrated significantly different benthic invertebrate community structures as a result of biofilm exposure to hypoxia and that the hypoxic and normoxic treatments were dominated by Hydroides sp. and Folliculina sp., respectively.  相似文献

In this paper, a simple cyclic cracking model incorporating crack dilatancy effect is proposed to model the behaviour of reinforced concrete structures under earthquake-like dynamic loading. This model has been implemented into a FE programme [LUSAS (2004) Luscas User Manual (version 12.3), FEA Ltd., London, England] to simulate reversed and cyclic loading. A shaking table test performed in Switzerland at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Zurich (ETHZ) has been chosen for comparison. The test performed on the shaking table simulated a wall of a 3-storey building. The natural frequency and the crack pattern have been calculated and show reasonable agreement with the experimental results  相似文献

The Mananjary emerald deposits are hosted in phlogopite-rich rocks formed through metasomatic alteration of meta-ultrabasites (hornblendites) at about 500 °C and 2 kbar due to infiltration of fluoride-rich fluids. A thermodynamic model explains the role of fluoride-complexation in the transport of Be and points to co-precipitation of F-phlogopite as the cause of beryl deposition. This study examines the Indian summer monsoon hydroclimate in the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP)-Department of Energy (DOE) Reanalysis (R2), the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR), and the Modern Era Retrospective-Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA). The three reanalyses show significant differences in the climatology of evaporation, low-level winds, and precipitable water fields over India. For example, the continental evaporation is significantly less in CFSR compared to R2 and MERRA. Likewise the mean boreal summer 925?hPa westerly winds in the northern Indian Ocean are stronger in R2. Similarly the continental precipitable water in R2 is much less while it is higher and comparable in MERRA and CFSR. Despite these climatological differences between the reanalyses, the climatological evaporative sources for rain events over central India show some qualitative similarities. Major differences however appear when interannual variations of the Indian summer monsoon are analyzed. The anomalous oceanic sources of moisture from the adjacent Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea play a significant role in determining the wet or dry year of the Indian monsoon in CFSR. However in R2 the local evaporative sources from the continental region play a more significant role. We also find that the interannual variability of the evaporative sources in the break spells of the intraseasonal variations of the Indian monsoon is stronger than in the wet spells. We therefore claim that instead of rainfall, evaporative sources may be a more appropriate metric to observe the relationship between the seasonal monsoon strength and intraseasonal activity. These findings are consistent across the reanalyses and provide a basis to improve the predictability of intraseasonal variability of the Indian monsoon. This study also has a bearing on improving weather prediction for tropical cyclones in that we suggest targeting enhanced observations in the Bay of Bengal (where it is drawing the most moisture from) for improved analysis during active spells of the intraseasonal variability of the Indian monsoon. The analysis suggests that the land–atmosphere interactions contribute significant uncertainty to the Indian monsoon in the reanalyses, which is consistent with the fact that most of the global reanalyses do not assimilate any land-surface data because the data are not available. Therefore, the land–atmosphere interaction in the reanalyses is highly dependent on the land-surface model and it’s coupling with the atmospheric model.  相似文献

The 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake triggered the catastrophic Tsaoling landslide in central Taiwan. We mapped the landslide area and estimated the landslide volume, using high-resolution digital elevation model from airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), satellite images, aerial photographs and topographic maps. The comparison between cut and fill volumes, about 0.126 and 0.150 km3, respectively, suggests a volume increase of 19% due to decompaction during landsliding. In April 2002, the cut and fill volumes were about 0.137 and 0.116 km3, respectively. These estimates suggest that 2.5 years after the event, the volume of landslide debris removed by river erosion was nearly 0.045 km3. Such a large value highlights the importance of landslide processes for erosion and long-term denudation in the Taiwan mountain belt. To cite this article: R.-F. Chen et al., C. R. A temporary network of microearthquake seismographs deployed in the northern part of Svalbard recorded numerous earthquakes during the summer of 1982. Most of the earthquakes occurred in concentrated zones in restricted portions of three fault complexes in central Nordaustlandet, but minor activity also occurred to the east and west of these complexes. Within the uncertainty of the epicentral locations, most earthquakes which occurred on land in regions not covered by glaciers could be associated with segments of mapped faults. There are numerous fault segments and even entire faults, however, along which no recorded earthquake occurred. The concentrated spatial locations of these earthquakes along preferred portions of mapped faults, and the absence of throughgoing lines of activity, suggest that these are intraplate earthquakes occurring along existing faults in response to an applied stress field. Composite fault-plane solutions for the three most active regions each include one nodal-plane which can be associated, at least roughly, with a trend of seismicity and trend of a mapped fault. The directions of greatest principle stress for the three fault plane solutions vary between N90°W and N55°W, directions which agree approximately with maximum stress directions determined for a region about 200 km to the south. The consistency of the directions of maximum principle stress obtained for earthquakes throughout a broad region of Svalbard suggests that the earthquakes there occur in response to a stress field which is of plate tectonic origin.  相似文献

A global seismic hazard assessment was conducted using the probabilistic approach in conjunction with a modified means of evaluating the seismicity parameters. The earthquake occurrence rate function was formulated for area source cells from recent instrumental earthquake catalogs. For the statistical application of the G–R relation of each source cell, the upper- and lower-bound magnitudes were determined from, respectively, historical earthquake data using a Kernel smoothing operator and detection thresholds of recent catalogs. The seismic hazard at a particular site was obtained by integrating the hazard contribution from influencing cells, and the results were combined with the Poisson distribution to obtain the seismic hazard in terms of the intensity at 10% probability of exceedance for the next 50 years. The seismic hazard maps for three countries, constructed using the same method, agree well with the existing maps obtained by different methods. The method is applicable to both oceanic and continental regions, and for any specific duration of time. It can be used for those regions without detailed geological information or where the relation between existing faults and earthquake occurrence is not clear.  相似文献
