A pollen record from Rock Lake in the Mission Mountains, northwestern Montana reveals a four-zone sequence reflecting Holocene vegetation change. Chronologic control is provided by two well-known tephras, Glacier Peak (11 200 yr B.P.) and Mazama (6800 yr B.P.). The presence of Glacier Peak tephra above the basal inorganic sediments indicates deglaciation prior to 11 200 yr B.P. Colonizing vegetation (Zone I) after the fall of Glacier Peak tephra was dominated byArtemisia (sage) andAlnus (alder). The presence ofAbies needles,Picea needles, and oneTaxus needle in the core demonstrates that these taxa were at Rock Lake at the time Zone II sediments were deposited. The increase inPinus,Picea, andAbies pollen in Zone II (10 850-4750 yr B.P.) suggests warmer and drier conditions prevailed, and may record the Hypsithermal. The pervasiveness ofPicea andAbies pollen in Pollen Zone III (4750-3350 yr B.P.) suggests the emergence of the modern subalpine forest. Pollen Zone IV (3350 yr B.P.-present) is characterized by relatively little change in the pollen assemblages. One noted change, however, is the increase of Cyperaceae (sedge), which may indicate an expansion of shore-line around the lake, possibly reflecting increased precipitation.This is the 5th in a series of papers published in this special AMQUA issue. Little Manitou Lake is a topographically closed, hypersaline lake that occupies a long, linear glacial meltwater channel in the northern Great Plains of western Canada. Most of the modern and late Holocene sediment in the lake has been generated from within the basin itself, either by endogenic inorganic precipitation or by other authigenic processes. These endogenic and authigenic precipitates, composed of mainly very soluble sulfate salts and sparingly soluble carbonates, provide an explicit record of the past chemical and hydrological fluctuations that have occurred in the lake. Although detailed chronostratigraphy is incomplete, preliminary14C dating indicates an age of about 2000 years for the oldest sediment recovered from the basin.Five subsurface sedimentary facies are identified in offshore cores. From the base these are: (i) structureless, gray clay, (ii) gypsiferous mud, (iii) structureless, organic-rich mud, (iv) finely laminated aragonitic mud, and (v) Na and Mg sulfate salts. The lithostratigraphy and variation in the mineralogical composition of the sediment indicate that Little Manitou Lake experienced significant water level changes and compositional fluctuations during the past several millennia. The basal clays indicate a relatively deep, freshwater lake existed about 2000 years ago, but was soon followed by a period of low water/playa sedimentation and a negative hydrological budget in the basin. Water levels gradually increased after about 1500 years ago in response to a cooler and wetter climate. This resulted in development of a meromictic, saline to hypersaline lake characterized by periodic carbonate (aragonite) whitings. Water levels again decreased about 1000 years ago, resulting in a breakdown of meromixis and initiation of subaqueous evaporitic salt precipitation. Although the brine in Little Manitou Lake has fluctuated between Na-SO4 and Mg-Na-SO4 -Cl types during the past 1000 years, water levels and overall salinities have remained relatively constant.Palliser Triangle Global Change Contribution No. 16.  相似文献

Eleven monthly estuarine profiles of dissolved inorganic germanium (Gei) and silica (Si) in a natural, pristine river/bay system demonstrate that Ge-removal and -input parallel the seasonal silica cycle, reflecting Ge-uptake by and -dissolution from diatoms. The Ge/Si atom ratio of the river is 0.6 ± 0.15 × 10?6, which is near the average value for continental granites and for uncontaminated, remote, natural rivers (0.7 ± 0.3 × 10?6). The GeSi ratio escaping this estuary to the ocean is 0.8 × 10?6, reflecting some estuarine enhancement of the fluvial Ge-flux, probably due to release of Gei from fluvial particulates. Nevertheless, the post-estuarine GeSi ratio is not significantly different from the continental crustal ratio but is very different from the ratio in sea-floor hot springs and mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal plumes (4 ± 2 × 10?6) and in oceanic basalts (2.6 × 10?6). Thus natural estuarine processes do not obscure the contrasting GeSi signatures entering the ocean from dissolution of continental and sea-floor silicates.  相似文献

Surface water transport and larval dispersal potential within Mission Bay, San Diego, California and along the southern California coast were studied with drift test tubes. Drift tubes, released once during each season at six sites inside Mission Bay, traveled up to 173 km north and 205 km south of Mission Bay at maximum rates of 36 cm per s (north) and 50 cm per s (south). These findings were used to estimate probability of larval transport out of Mission Bay for the intertidal spionid polychaete Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata (Okuda) which occurred in the back of the bay. Outer coast drift tube returns were used to determine potential for gene flow, via larval exchange, between populations in isolated bays along the California coast. Drift tube recoveries and larval abundances in the plankton indicate that few Pseudopolydora larvae leave Mission Bay, but that longshore currents can carry those which do to other suitable bay habitats.  相似文献

Results from two independently developed biomass-burning smoke plume models are compared. Model results were obtained for the temporal evolution of two nascent smoke plumes originating from significantly different fire environments (an Alaskan boreal forest and an African savanna). The two smoke plume models differed by 1%–10% for [O3], with similar differences for NO x and formaldehyde (relative percent differences). Smaller intermodel differences were observed for the African savanna smoke plume as compared to the plume from the Alaskan boreal fire. Mechanistic differences between the models are heightened for the Alaskan smoke plume due to the higher VOC emission ratios as compared to the African savanna fire. The largest deviations result from the differences in oxidative photochemical mechanisms, with a smaller contribution attributable to the calculation of photolysis frequencies. The differences between the two smoke plume models are significantly smaller than the uncertainties of available photokinetic data or field measurements. Model accuracy depends most significantly on having the fullest possible VOC data, a requirement that is constrained by currently available instrumentation.  相似文献

Oxidation of pyrite by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at millimolar levels has been studied from 4 to 150 °C in order to evaluate isotopic effects potentially associated with radiolytic oxidation of pyrite. Gaseous, aqueous, and solid phases were collected and measured following sealed-tube experiments that lasted from 1 to 14 days. The dominant gaseous product was molecular oxygen. No volatile sulfur species were recovered from any experiment. Sulfate was the only aqueous sulfur species detected in solution, with sulfite and thiosulfate below the detection limits. X-ray diffraction patterns and images from scanning electron microscopy reveal solid residues composed primarily of hydrated ferric iron sulfates and sporadic ferric-ferrous iron sulfates. Hematite was detected only in solid residue produced during high temperature experiments. Elemental sulfur and/or polysulfides are inferred to be form on reacting pyrite surface based on extraction with organic solvents. Pyrite oxidation by H2O2 increases in rate with increasing H2O2concentration, pyrite surface area, and temperature. Rates measured in sealed-tube experiments at 25°C, for H2O2 concentration of 2 × 10−3 M are 8.8 × 10−9 M/m2/sec, which are higher than previous estimates. A combination of reactive oxygen species from H2O2 decomposition products and reactive iron species from pyrite dissolution is inferred to aggressively oxidize the receding pyrite surface. Competing oxidants with temperature-dependent oxidation efficiencies results in multiple reaction mechanisms for different temperatures and surface conditions. Sulfur isotope values of remaining pyrite were unchanged during the experiments, but showed distinct enrichment of 34S in produced sulfate and depletion in elemental sulfur. The Δsulfate-pyrite and Δelemental sulfur-pyrite was +0.5 to +1.5‰ and was −0.2 to −1‰, respectively. Isotope data from high-temperature experiments indicate an additional 34S-depleted sulfur fraction, with up to 4‰ depletion of 34S, in the hematite. Sulfur isotope trends were not influenced by H2O2 concentration, temperature, or reaction time. Results of this study indicate that radiolytically produced oxidants, such as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals, could efficiently oxidize pyrite in an otherwise oxygen-limited environment. Although H2O2 is generally regarded as being of minor geochemical significance on Earth, the H2O2 molecule plays a pivotal role in Martian atmospheric and soil chemistry. Additional experimental and field studies are needed to characterize sulfur and oxygen isotope systematics during radiolytical oxidation of metallic sulfides and elemental sulfur.  相似文献

Satellite instruments, particularly the Landsat TM (Thematic Mapper) and ETM+ (Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus) series of sensors, are important tools in the interdisciplinary study of tropical forests that are increasingly integrated into studies that monitor changes in vegetation cover within tropical forests and tropical protected areas, and also applied with other types of data to investigate the drivers of land cover change. However, further advances in the use of Landsat to study and monitor tropical forests and protected areas are threatened by the scan line corrector failure on the ETM+ sensor, as well as uncertainty about the continuity of the Landsat mission. Given these problems, this paper illustrates how ETM+ data were used in an interdisciplinary study that effectively monitored forest cover change in Gunung Palung National Park in West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Following 31 May 2003, when the ETM+ sensor's scan line corrector failed, we analysed how this failure impedes our ability to perform a similar study from this date onwards. This analysis uses six simulated post-scan line corrector failure (SLC-off) images and reveals that data gaps caused by SLC-off introduce maximum errors of 1.47 per cent and 4.04 per cent in estimates of forest cover and rates of forest loss, respectively. The analysis also demonstrates how SLC-off has transformed ETM+ data from a complete inventory dataset to a statistical sample with variable sample fraction, and notes how this data loss will confound the use of Landsat data to model land cover change in a spatially explicit manner. We discuss potential limited uses of SLC-off data and suggest alternative sensors that may provide essential remotely sensed data for monitoring tropical forests in Southeast Asia.  相似文献
