The hydrocarbon secreting alga Botryococcus has been identified in organic remains of sediments ranging from Precambrian to Recent, and is believed to have been a major source material for petroleum generation throughout the geological time. In some petroleum source rocks of Lower Palaeozoic and Precambrian age, identification of the alga is only possible by electron microscopy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been used in the present study to identify microstructures of the algal remains in a range of oil shales and petroleum source rocks. It has been established that Botryococcus is the predominant alga in the Kukersite oil shale of Estonia. Similarly, the alga has been shown to be a major contributor to petroleum source rocks in Cambrian and Precambrian sedimentary basins in Australia. TEM has been applied to observations of Botryococcus in torbanites and to products from simulated maturation experiments on torbanite. A comparison with algal remains from Cambrian and Precambrian sediments ranging from undermature to overmature, enabled the distinction of organic matter in various stages of oil generation. We have conducted a survey of zeolite occurrences in saline-alkaline paleolake deposits on Earth to identify the most prominent zeolite alteration patterns and to characterize the most common authigenic minerals and their paragenetic relationships. We collected the bulk mineral assemblages (from previous and our studies) as identified by X-ray diffraction from zeolitic tuff beds and associated sedimentary beds from thirteen paleolake deposits from the USA, Mexico, Greece, and Tanzania. We applied the Kohonen Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) to look for interesting patterns in the tuff bed mineral assemblages without prescribing any specific interpretation, and for information reduction and classification. Decision Tree (DT) method was applied to characterize these clusters. We were able to define clear class boundaries between fresh glass, non-analcime zeolites, analcime, and K feldspar. The non-analcime zeolites were further grouped into several classes based on mineral type. We also discuss the potential implications for Mars, showing that the mineral assemblages of diagenetic facies identified by SOM and DT can be used to test or validate the orbital, in situ, or modeling results, while the trained SOM provides a robust generalized ability to classify the new mineral assemblage data into the most common diagenetic facies identified in saline-alkaline paleoenvironments that contain zeolites. The study concludes that generalizing the complex geochemical behaviors using unsupervised statistical learning methods can help to identify the most prominent geochemical behaviors. 相似文献

We obtained U–Th disequilibrium age data on zircons from each of the four rhyolite eruptions that built Tarawera volcano in
the last 22 ka within the Okataina Volcanic Center (OVC), caldera, New Zealand. Secondary ion mass spectrometry analyses on
unpolished euhedral crystal faces that lack resorption features show that crystal growth variously terminated from near-eruption
age to ~100 ka prior to eruption. Age-depth profiling of crystals reveals long periods of continuous (~34 ka) and discontinuous
growth (~90 ka). Growth hiatuses of up to ~40 ka duration occur, but do not all relate to obvious resorption surfaces. Age
differences up to similar magnitude are found on opposing faces of some crystals suggesting episodes of partial exposure to
melts. These features are best explained by periodic, complete, or partial, sub-solidus storage and/or inclusion in larger
crystal phases, followed by rapid liberation prior to eruption. This is supported by high abundances of U and Th (~500 − >2,000 ppm)
in some zircons consistent with periods of high crystallinity (>70%) in the magmatic system, based on crystal/melt partitioning.
Contemporaneous but contrasting rim-ward trends of these elements within crystals, even in the same lava hand sample, require
synchronous growth in separate melt bodies and little connectivity within the system, but also significant crystal transport
and mixing prior to eruption. Many crystals record continuity of growth through the preceding ~60 ka OVC caldera-collapse
and subsequent eruptions from Tarawera. This demonstrates a decoupling between eruption triggers, such as shallow crustal
extension and mafic intrusion, and the crystallization state of the OVC silicic magmatic system. The data highlights the need
to distinguish between the time for accumulation of eruptible magma and the long-term magma residence time based on the age

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2015 Paris Agreement are two of the most important policy frameworks of the twenty-first century. However, the alignment of national commitments linked to them has not yet been analysed for West African states. Such analyses are vital to avoid perverse outcomes if states assess targets and develop SDG implementation plans, and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, without integrated planning and cross-sectoral alignment. This article provides a situation analysis guided by the following questions: (a) Which priority sectors are mentioned in relation to adaptation and mitigation in West African NDCs? (b) Are the NDCs of West African states well aligned with the SDGs? (c) What are the co-benefits of NDCs in contributing towards the SDGs? and (d) How are West African states planning to finance actions in their NDCs? The study uses iterative content analysis to explore key themes for adaptation and mitigation within NDCs of 11 West African states and their alignment to selected SDGs. A national multi-stakeholder workshop was held in Ghana to examine the co-benefits of the NDCs in contributing towards the SDGs and their implementation challenges. Results show that agriculture and energy are priority sectors where NDCs have pledged significant commitments. The analysis displays good alignment between mitigation and adaptation actions proposed in NDCs and the SDGs. These represent opportunities that can be harnessed through integration into national sectoral policies. However, cross-sectoral discussions in Ghana identify significant challenges relating to institutional capacity, a lack of coordination among institutions and agencies, and insufficient resources in moving towards integrated implementation of national planning priorities to address successfully both NDC priorities and the SDGs.Key policy insights
Positive alignments between West African NDCs and SDGs present opportunities for mutual benefits that can advance national development via a more climate resilient pathway.
NDCs of West African states can provide mutual benefits across the water–energy–food nexus, such as through climate-smart agriculture and low carbon energy technologies.
Ghanaian multi-sectoral insights show the need to empower national coordinating bodies to overcome misalignments across different sectors.

Black Hill is a boulder‐strewn residual of norite standing 45 m above the Murray Plains about 80 km northeast of Adelaide. Between the boulders, the crystalline rock has weathered to a dark‐brown terra rossa‐rendzina soil with calcite, illite, kaolin, and hematite as the principal secondary minerals. At one site on the smooth lower slopes of the outcrop, the material above the norite consists of partially weathered granular fragments with considerable dolomite and some calcite in nodular form. Below the surface, the rock has been weathered along joints to produce the clay mineral nontronite, and between each corestone and this plastic clay there is a zone of laminated but essentially unaltered rock 10–25 cm thick. Pieces of amorphous silica occur sporadically in some joints and on the surface. The dark‐brown soil appears to be related to the present environment but the nontronite in the joint weathering, the dolomite, and the amorphous silica are all consistent with the norite having been inundated, possibly during the Miocene marine transgression. Calculations based on the retention of elements such as aluminium, potassium, titanium, and iron have been used to predict quantitatively the amount of certain minerals such as quartz, calcite, and dolomite introduced to the weathering profiles. 相似文献

Sedimentary rocks of the Palaeoproterozoic Calvert and Isa Superbasins are exposed across a large area of northern Australia. Despite the extent of the exposures there is little to indicate the nature of the basin margins as most outcrop boundaries are structurally or erosionally defined, or the margins, where preserved, are concealed beneath younger basins. The Murphy Inlier, which forms the boundary between the Mt Isa and McArthur Basins, is unique in that on its southern flanks a basin‐margin succession is well‐preserved as the Fickling Group. A detailed sequence‐stratigraphic analysis of outcrop sections and well logs, supplemented by seismic reflection profiles and SHRIMP U–Pb zircon ages, shows that all seven supersequences of the Isa Superbasin and one supersequence from the older Calvert Superbasin are represented in the Fickling Group. Through this high‐resolution sequence‐stratigraphic framework, it is possible to accurately correlate chronostratigraphically equivalent strata from the McNamara Group on the central Lawn Hill Platform to the Fickling Group on the southern Murphy Inlier. Each supersequence thins substantially from the McNamara Group (~11 km thick) to the Fickling Group (<1 km thick). The combined effects of truncation and onlap of sequences over the Murphy Inlier basement high are responsible for the thinning. Major time breaks of up to 25 million years occur between supersequences in the Fickling Group. Erosional hiatuses are often manifested at the base of supersequences as conglomerate beds composed of silicified detritus from older strata. Sequences in the Fickling Group were generally deposited in a proximal basin‐margin setting, while sequences in the McNamara Group were deposited in distal basin depocentres. The proximal depositional setting of Fickling Group sequences reduces the number of thick carbonaceous shale and siltstone intervals, which often host Zn–Pb–Ag and Cu deposits in the McNamara Group. Many host sequences from the McNamara Group are also absent in the Fickling Group due to truncation and onlap pinchout. Consequently, the economic potential of Palaeoproterozoic strata on the southern Murphy Inlier is less than equivalent strata from the central Lawn Hill Platform. Despite this, potential does exist for future discoveries of economic mineral deposits in the Mt Les Siltstone and Walford Dolomite units of the Fickling Group. 相似文献

Molecular orbital calculations have been completed on sulfate monomers and a dimer in a determination of minimum-energy geometries and electron density distributions. SO bond lengths calculated for the monomer and dimer correlate linearly with the fractional s-characters of the bonds, as observed for sulfate groups in crystals. With increasing coordination number of S, the bonded radii of S and O, as determined from electron density maps, increase at the same rate. This is at variance with the assumption that the radius of the oxide ion is nearly constant and that bond length variations arise primarily from changes in cation radii. The dimer shows a relatively large change in energy as its SOS angle is deformed from its minimum-energy value (125.6°) to 180°, in conformity with the small variation among observed angles. This is in contrast to the wide variation of bridging angles observed for silicate and phosphate dimers in crystals and molecules, and may imply that significant differences should be expected in the behavior of sulfates with respect to polymorphism and glass formation. The reaction energy of SO3 + H2O → H2SO4, calculated with second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory, agrees with the experimental value.
