A revised chronological framework for the deglaciation of the Lake Michigan lobe of the south‐central Laurentide Ice Sheet is presented based on radiocarbon ages of plant macrofossils archived in the sediments of low‐relief ice‐walled lakes. We analyze the precision and accuracy of 15 AMS 14C ages of plant macrofossils obtained from a single ice‐walled lake deposit. The semi‐circular basin is about 0.72 km wide and formed of a 4‐ to 16‐m‐thick succession of loess and lacustrine sediment inset into till. The assayed material was leaves, buds and stems of Salix herbacea (snowbed willow). The pooled mean of three ages from the basal lag facies was 18 270 ± 50 14C a BP (21 810 cal. a BP), an age that approximates the switch from active ice to stagnating conditions. The pooled mean of four ages for the youngest fossil‐bearing horizon was 17 770 ± 40 14C a BP (21 180 cal. a BP). Material yielding the oldest and youngest ages may be obtained from sediment cores located at any place within the landform. Based on the estimated settling times of overlying barren, rhythmically bedded sand and silt, the lacustrine environment persisted for about 50 more years. At a 67% confidence level, the dated part of the ice‐walled lake succession persisted for between 210 and 860 cal. a (modal value: 610 cal. a). The deglacial age of five moraines or morainal complexes formed by the fluctuating margin of the Lake Michigan lobe have been assessed using this method. There is no overlap of time intervals documenting when ice‐walled lakes persisted on these landforms. The rapid readvances of the lobe during deglaciation after the last glacial maximum probably occurred at some point between the periods of ice‐walled lake sedimentation. North America's Atlantic Coast has been a focus of human settlement and subsistence for millennia, but sea‐level rise, sedimentation, and other processes pose significant challenges for archaeological research. Radiocarbon dating of 31 shell middens near the Rhode River Estuary, Maryland provides an opportunity to evaluate human land use, settlement, and cultural chronologies on the Chesapeake Bay. Sixty calibrated radiocarbon dates on eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) shell and charcoal demonstrate that Native Americans, colonial, and historic peoples harvested oysters and other shellfish from at least 3200 years ago through the 19th century. The number of dated sites increases during the Late Woodland period after about 1000 cal yr B.P., a factor probably related to greater site visibility and preservation, as well as increased human exploitation of the watershed. Accumulation rates for five of the shell middens provide preliminary indications that some of the sites accumulated rapidly suggesting, along with other evidence, that many of the region's shell middens were logistical or perhaps seasonal camps. Our study demonstrates the importance of regional watershed surveys and radiocarbon dating programs to help build and refine cultural chronologies in coastal regions threatened by sea‐level rise and other processes.  相似文献

所谓近似对称矩阵是指矩阵中仅有极少一部分元素是非对称的,在将对角线以上的非对称元素用其对角线以下的对称元素替代后,该矩阵就变成了一个对称矩阵。在求解非线性连续介质力学问题时常常会遇到近似非对称矩阵。基于Sherman-Morrison定理,给出了一种新的近似非对称矩阵的分解算法。在确保数值稳定性的前提下,无论在求解效率还是在内存开销方面新算法都优于一般的非对称稀疏矩阵的求解器,且仅需对传统的基于LDLT分解的求解器略做修改,即可开发出适应于对称和非对称稀疏矩阵的求解器。最后用一个摩擦接触算例,显示了新算法的优越性。  相似文献

Orca Basin is a highly reducing basin on the slope of the Gulf of Mexico. Stable carbon isotope ratios and total organic carbon percentages were determined for two cores within the basin and one control core outside the basin. The results show that the organic carbon content of the basin cores is consistently 2–3 times greater than that of the control core. The Pleistocene-Holocene boundary, indicated by a break in the δ13C depth profile, occurs at a greater sediment depth in the basin cores than in the control core. A small sampling interval has made it possible to detect an unexplained fine structure in the δ13C profile not previously observed.  相似文献

The “type” DeKalb mounds of northeastern Illinois, USA (42.0°N, −88.7°W), are formed of basal sand and gravel overlain by rhythmically bedded fines, and weathered sand and gravel. Generally from 2 to 7 m thick, the fines include abundant fossils of ostracodes and uncommon leaves and stems of tundra plants. Rare chironomid head capsules, pillclam shells, and aquatic plant macrofossils also have been observed.Radiocarbon ages on the tundra plant fossils from the “type” region range from 20,420 to 18,560 cal yr BP. Comparison of radiocarbon ages of terrestrial plants from type area ice-walled lake plains and adjacent kettle basins indicate that the topographic inversion to ice-free conditions occurred from 18,560 and 16,650 cal yr BP. Outside the “type” area, the oldest reliable age of tundra plant fossils in DeKalb mound sediment is 21,680 cal yr BP; the mound occurs on the northern arm of the Ransom Moraine (−88.5436°W, 41.5028°N). The youngest age, 16,250 cal yr BP, is associated with a mound on the Deerfield Moraine (−87.9102°W, 42.4260°N) located about 9 km east of Lake Michigan. The chronology of individual successions indicates the lakes persisted on the periglacial landscape for about 300 to 1500 yr.  相似文献

Electron-microprobe analyses of coexisting Ca-rich and Ca-poor pyroxenes from rocks of the Skaergaard intrusion indicate that their compositional relationships are controlled by two types of tie-line in the pyroxene quadrilateral. Solidus tie-lines join bulk compositions of pairs of pyroxenes that crystallized contemporaneously from a melt at equilibrium. Subsolidus tie-lines join the compositions of lamellae and host materials in pyroxene exsolution intergrowths. The solidus tie-line for a pair of pyroxenes in a specimen and their subsolidus tie-lines do not coincide and the subsolidus tie-line for inverted pigeonite is further from the hedenbergite-ferrosilite join of the quadrilateral than that for augite.The orientation of solidus tie-lines within the pyroxene quadrilateral indicates that during the simultaneous crystallization of two pyroxenes from the Skaergaard magma there was similar partitioning of Mg and Fe in the two phases relative to the melt. The relationship of the subsolidus tie-lines of a pair of coexisting pyroxenes to their solidus tie-line indicates that during the formation of exsolution intergrowths, changes in the composition of the pyroxene matrix involved primarily a change in its CaMg+Fe ratio while those of the lamellae involved both a change in their CaMg+Fe ratio and in their MgFe ratio. The MgFe ratio of the augite lamellae in inverted pigeonite progressively increased with cooling while that of the Ca-poor lamellae in augite progressively decreased with cooling.  相似文献

The Effects of Lake Breezes On Weather–Manitoba (ELBOW-MB) field project, conducted around Lakes Manitoba and Winnipeg in July 2013, was the first in-depth field study of lake breezes in Manitoba, Canada. Using observational data collected during ELBOW-MB and output from the 2.5?km Canadian High Resolution Deterministic Prediction System (HRDPS), comparisons were made between HRDPS output and observational data to determine whether the HRDPS can simulate Manitoba lake breezes. The model comparisons considered various lake-breeze characteristics, such as depth, inland penetration distance, and initiation and dissipation time. In addition, cross-sections of lake-breeze circulations were analyzed. The results show that the HRDPS was able to correctly simulate lake breezes, or lack thereof, in 78% of cases on Lake Winnipeg and 68% of cases on Lake Manitoba. Modelled lake-breeze initiation and dissipation times were found to be too early in some cases and too late in others when compared with observations. Overall, it was found that the HRDPS was able to simulate most aspects of lake breezes, although inland penetration distance was one characteristic that the HRDPS was not able to simulate realistically.  相似文献

Summary This paper describes an attempt to model soil moisture over the Australian continent with an integrated system of dynamic models and a Geographic Information System (GIS) data base. A land surface scheme with improved treatment of soil hydrological processes is described. The non-linear relationships between soil hydraulic conductivity, matric potential and soil moisture are derived from the Broadbridge and White soil model. For a single location, the prediction of the scheme is in good agreement with the measurements of the Hydrological and Atmospheric Pilot Experiment (HAPEX). High resolution atmospheric and geographic data are used in soil moisture prediction over the Australian continent. The importance of reliable land surface parameters is emphasized and details are given for deriving the parameters from a GIS. Predicted soil moisture patterns over the Australian continent in summer, with a 50 km spatial resolution, are found to be closely related to the distribution of soil types, apart from isolated areas and times under the influence of precipitation. This is consistent with the notion that the Australian continent in summer is generally under water stress. In contrast, predicted soil temperatures are more closely related to radiation patterns and changes in atmospheric circulation. The simulation can provide details of soil moisture evolution both in space and time, that are very useful for studies of land use sustainability, such as plant growth modelling and soil erosion prediction.With 12 Figures  相似文献

Summary Several problems associated with capturing the effects of bushfires on hydrological processes in the Goulburn River catchment (6810km2), Hunter Valley, Australia are investigated using a paired-catchment analysis. It is suggested, first, that the within-year-missing data, as defined in this paper, need to be examined carefully when using the double-mass curve of annual total discharge in a paired-catchment analysis. Second, in order to provide an accurate precipitation background, which is one of the most important prerequisites for a paired-catchment analysis, the use of annual average precipitation is strongly recommended together with annual total precipitation when there are large amounts of within-year-missing data. Third, caution is needed in comparing multi-year average precipitation and streamflow data before and after the fire when the data series is not statistically long enough, since the average values for precipitation and streamflow over a different number of years may produce completely contrasting results. Fourth, the analysis of the flow duration curve, which is another useful technique in paired-catchment analysis, needs to be interpreted from the precipitation duration curve. This is because the change of flow duration curve can be caused either from the change of precipitation or the fire. Fifth, the change in streamflow, calculated by subtracting the average streamflow for the non-fire years from the observed streamflow for the years in which fires occurred, is not an efficient way of capturing the fire effects. The problem associated with this approach is not just that the streamflow is strongly dependent on rainfall, as reported elsewhere, but also, it can lead to misinterpretation using the hydrograph when the average streamflow in non-fire years is close to the average streamflow in fire years.By taking into account the above problems there was no effect of fires found on streamflow in the Goulburn River catchment. This result contrasts with the conclusions reported from other studies that have reported an immediate increase in streamflow by experimental analyses, paired-catchment analyses or modelling studies. Instead, it is shown that the spatial pattern of precipitation over the Goulburn River catchment is more important in shaping the hydrograph than the effects of bushfires. The ratio of fire extent to catchment area is approximately 4% in this study, which we suggest is a minimum area required to identify a hydrological response to the fires. The fact that other studies have focused more on capturing the generally expected effect of an immediate increase in streamflow after fire, than on why this effect occurs, makes it highly desirable to undertake micro-meteorological experiments to obtain observed evapotranspiration data before and after fire. Also, it is important to develop a coupled soil-vegetation-atmosphere-transfer dynamic mechanism and high resolution numerical weather prediction model with a distributed hydrological model in order to simulate more realistically the effect of fire on hydrological processes.  相似文献
