Directional secular variation of the geomagnetic field over the last 2000 years has been defined in western Europe from numerous archeomagnetic studies. However, the number of archeomagnetic results for older periods is much more limited. For this reason, we present new data obtained from fired archeological structures found in two French sites (Loupiac and Aspiran) dated within the first millennium b.c. (latest Bronze-earliest Iron Age transition, ∼850-700 b.c. and Iron Age, ∼525-475 b.c., respectively). From a compilation of archeomagnetic results from western Europe (Great Britain, Italy and France) and northern Africa (Tunisia), we propose a directional secular variation curve for western Europe that covers the entire first millennium b.c. This curve exhibits a large clockwise motion with rapid changes during the first half of the millennium, while the last four centuries b.c. are characterized by weak variations.  相似文献

Subfossil chironomid analysis was applied to a sediment core from Sägistalsee, a small lake at present-day tree-line elevation in the Swiss Alps. During the whole 9000-year stratigraphy the chironomid fauna was dominated by taxa typical of alpine lakes. Major faunistic trends were caused by changes in accumulation rates of three taxa, namely Procladius, Stictochironomus, and Tanytarsus lugens-type. In the early Holocene Procladius was the dominant taxon. In younger samples, Stictochironomus tended to have as high or higher abundances and both taxa showed an increase in accumulation rates. A possible cause of this succession is the decrease of lake-water depth due to infilling of the lake basin and changes in associated limnological parameters. The immigration of Picea (spruce) at ca. 6500 cal. 14C yrs BP and the resulting denser woodlands in the lake's catchment may have promoted this trend. During three phases, from ca. 70–1450, 1900–2350, and 3500–3950 cal. BP, remains of Procladius, Stictochironomus, and Tanytarsus lugens-type are absent from the lake sediment, whereas other typical lake taxa and stream chironomids show no change in accumulation rate. Together with sediment chemistry data, this suggests that increased oxygen deficits in the lake's bottom water during these intervals caused the elimination of chironomids living in the deepest part of the lake. All three periods coincide with increased human activity in the catchment, as deduced from palaeobotanical evidence. Therefore, enhanced nutrient loading of the lake due to the presence of humans and their livestock in the catchment is the most likely cause of the increased anoxia. The chironomid fauna reacted the same way to intensive pasturing during the last ca. 1500 years as to Bronze Age clear-cutting and more moderate pasturing during the Bronze, Iron, and Roman Ages, suggesting that alpine lake ecosystems can be extremely sensitive to human activity in the catchment. On the other hand, the chironomid assemblages show a considerable amount of resilience to human disturbance, as the chironomid fauna reverted to the pre-impact stage after the first two periods of human activity. In recent years, even though pasturing decreased again, the chironomid fauna has only partly recovered. This is possibly due to other human-induced changes in the lake ecosystem, e.g., the stocking of the lake with fish. The chironomid stratigraphy is difficult to interpret climatologically as the strongest changes in chironomid-inferred temperatures coincide with periods of intensive human activity in the catchment.  相似文献

Both seismology and geochemistry show that the Earth's mantle is chemically heterogeneous on a wide range of scales. Moreover, its rheology depends strongly on temperature, pressure and chemistry. To interpret the geological data, we need a physical understanding of the forms that convection might take in such a mantle. We have therefore carried out laboratory experiments to characterize the interaction of thermal convection with stratification in viscosity and in density. Depending on the buoyancy ratio B (ratio of the stabilizing chemical density anomaly to the destabilizing thermal density anomaly), two regimes were found: at high B, convection remains stratified and fixed, long-lived thermochemical plumes are generated at the interface, while at low B, hot domes oscillate vertically through the whole tank, while thin tubular plumes can rise from their upper surfaces. Convection acts to destroy the stratification through mechanical entrainment and instabilities. Therefore, both regimes are transient and a given experiment can start in the stratified regime, evolve towards the doming regime, and end in well-mixed classical one-layer convection. Applied to mantle convection, thermochemical convection can therefore explain a number of observations on Earth, such as hot spots, superswells or the survival of several geochemical reservoirs in the mantle. Scaling laws derived from laboratory experiments allow predictions of a number of characteristics of those features, such as their geometry, size, thermal structure, and temporal and chemical evolution. In particular, it is shown that (1) density heterogeneities are an efficient way to anchor plumes, and therefore to create relatively fixed hot spots, (2) pulses of activity with characteristic time-scale of 50–500 Myr can be produced by thermochemical convection in the mantle, (3) because of mixing, no ‘primitive’ reservoir can have survived untouched up to now, and (4) the mantle is evolving through time and its regime has probably changed through geological times. This evolution may reconcile the survival of geochemically distinct reservoirs with the small amplitude of present-day density heterogeneities inferred from seismology and mineral physics.  相似文献

The Santi Petri dome (western Betics, southern Spain) shows a core-complex-like structure, where migmatitic gneisses and schists outcrop below low-grade slates and phyllites, all of which form the basement of the Neogene Málaga basin. The migmatites and schists suffered a coaxial-flattening event during isothermal decompression and were later exhumed by ductile ESE non-coaxial stretching. Further exhumation was achieved by W- to SW-transport brittle low-angle normal faulting. Subsequently these extensional structures were gently folded in the core of a NE/SW-oriented antiform during the Tortonian. Finally the Santi Petri domal geometry was accentuated by the interference of orthogonal high-angle faults with ENE–WSW and NNW–SSE orientation. This core-complex-like structure, formed by superposition of extensional and compressive tectonic events, does not represent a classical, purely extensional core complex, which shows that metamorphic structure and geometry are not decisive criteria to define a core-complex.  相似文献

The strontium content and the SO42?/Cl? and Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios were used as natural tracers of the residence time of seawater intrusion into the Castell de Ferro aquifer. Analysis of these parameters indicated the existence of two principal flowpaths in the aquifer. The first flows through the eastern part of the aquifer, through the karstified Castell de Ferro massif; it accommodates a larger and more rapid flow, so that the residence time is shorter, leading to lower SO42+/Cl? ratios, lower Sr2+ content and higher Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios. The second flowpath is in the western sector, and flows exclusively through alluvial deposits; the flow here is slower, particularly that flowing towards the sea. Thus the residence time of the water here will be longer and there is scant flushing of the intruded seawater; this is manifested in the high Sr2+ content, high SO42+/Cl? and low Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios. 40Ar/39Ar dating on muscovites, performed on leucogranitic intrusions of Charroux–Civray plutonic complex, points out the existence of two peraluminous magmatic activities, whose equivalents are known in the Limousin: (1) garnet-bearing leucogranitic veins at ca. 340 Ma; (2) a specialised leucogranite associated with W ± Sn deposits at ca 310 Ma. However, available 40Ar/39Ar data do not allow us to provide further data concerning the age and the geometry at depth of a large leucogranitic body identified by geophysics. To cite this article: P.  From heat capacities measured adiabatically at low temperatures, the standard entropies at 298.15 K of synthetic rutile (TiO2) and nepheline (NaAlSiO4) have been determined to be 50.0 ± 0.1 and 122.8 ± 0.3 J mol−1 K, respectively. These values agree with previous measurements and in particular confirm the higher entropy of nepheline with respect to that of the less dense NaAlSiO4 polymorph carnegieite. Schwarzsee is located in the western Swiss Alps, in a region that has been affected by numerous landslides during the Holocene, as evidenced by geological surveys. Lacustrine sediments were cored to a depth of 13 m. The vegetation history of the lake's catchment was reconstructed and investigated to identify possible impacts on slope stability. The pollen analyses record development of forest cover during the middle and late Holocene, and provide strong evidence for regional anthropogenic influence such as forest clearing and agricultural activity. Vegetation change is characterized by continuous landscape denudation that begins at ca. 4300 cal. yrs BP, with five distinct pulses of increased deforestation, at 3650, 2700, 1500, 900, and 450 cal. yrs BP. Each pulse can be attributed to increased human impact, recorded by the appearance or increase of specific anthropogenic indicator plant taxa. These periods of intensified deforestation also appear to be correlated with increased landslide activity in the lake's catchment and increased turbidite frequency in the sediment record. Therefore, this study gives new evidence for a strong influence of vegetation changes on slope stability during the middle and late Holocene in the western Swiss Alps, and may be used as a case study for anthropogenically induced landslide activity.  相似文献
