We report on the comparison of winds measured by a medium frequency (MF) radar near Christchurch, New Zealand, and by the high resolution doppler imager (HRDI). Previous comparisons have demonstrated that there can be significant differences in the winds obtained by the two techniques, and our results are no different. However, these data show relatively good agreement in the meridional direction, but large differences in the zonal direction, where the radar is regularly measuring the zonal wind as too easterly. To do the comparison, overpasses from the satellite must be obtained when it is close to the radar site. The radar data are averaged in time around the overpass because we know the radars sample phenomena which have spatial and temporal scales which make them invisible to HRDI. There are a limited number of overpass comparisons which limit our confidence in these results, but a detailed analysis of these data show that the proximity of the overpass is often an important factor in the differences obtained. Other factors examined include the influence of the local time of the overpass, and the amount of radar data averaged around the overpass time. 相似文献

We present the spatio-temporal distribution of more than 2000 earthquakesthat occurred during the Umbria-Marche seismic crisis, between September 26and November 3, 1997. This distribution was obtained from recordings of atemporary network that was installed after the occurrence of the first two largest shocks (Mw =, 5.7, Mw = 6.0) of September 26. This network wascomposed of 27 digital 3-components stations densely distributed in theepicentral area. The aftershock distribution covers a region of about 40 km long and about2 km wide along the NW-SE central Apennines chain. The activity is shallow,mostly located at less than 9 km depth. We distinguished three main zonesof different seismic activity from NW to SE. The central zone, that containsthe hypocenter of four earthquakes of magnitude larger than 5, was the moreactive and the more complex one. Sections at depth identify 40–50°dipping structures that agree well with the moment tensor focalmechanisms results. The clustering and the migration of seismicity from NW to SE and the generalfeatures are imaged by aftershock distribution both horizontally and at depth. 相似文献

A new class of analytical, multilayered, viscoelastic Earth models based on PREM, with an incompressible, linear, viscoelastic Maxwell rheology, is applied to the modeling of global sea-level changes due to Pleistocene deglaciation. Until now, analytical schemes based on normal mode theory, have dealt with at most five layers, an elastic lithosphere, a three layered mantle including a transition zone, and a core (Spada et al., 1992. Geophys. J. Int. 109, 683–700). The novelty of our approach, used for the first time in sea-level studies, stands on an analytical scheme that can reproduce continuous elastic and rheological stratification when a sufficient number of layers is taken into account. We specifically assess the importance of our results for the Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite mission. GOCE will resolve the gravity field with a spatial resolution (half-wavelength) of 75 km and amplitude of 1.5 mgal, with a uniform coverage over the Earth, including presently unsurveyed, remote areas. Our models lead to post-glacial rebound induced free air gravity anomalies of a few mgals peak-to-peak in the harmonic degree range l=80–200, which will be discernible by GOCE. This finding demonstrates that post-glacial rebound has a high frequency component in the gravity field that can in principle be resolved by high resolution gravity satellite missions. We show that post-glacial rebound can contribute a substantial fraction to present-day sea-level variations and point out that for the Mediterranean Sea they are of the same order of magnitude as those induced by tectonic processes. 相似文献

Nutrient regeneration rates were determined at three sites increasing in distance from the Trinity River, the main freshwater
input source, to Galveston Bay, Texas, from 1994 through 1996. Diffusive fluxes generally agreed in direction with directly
measured benthic fluxes but underestimated the exchange of nutrients across the sediment-water interface. While the fluxes
of ammonium and phosphate were directed from the sediment into the overlying waters, the fluxes of silicate and chloride changed
in both magnitude and direction in response to changing Trinity River flow conditions. Oxygen fluxes showed benthic production
during both summer 1995 and winter 1996, while light-dark deployments showed production-consumption, respectively. Benthic
inputs of nutrients were higher at either the middle or outer Trinity Bay regions, most likely due to a higher quality and
quantity of the autochthonous organic matter deposited. This feature is consistent with and gives evidence for previously
observed non-conservative mixing behaviors reported for nutrients in this region of Galveston Bay. Calculated turnover times,
between 7 to 135 d for phosphate, 4 to 56 d for silicate, and 0.3 to 10 d for ammonium were significantly shorter than the
average Trinity Bay water residence time of 1.5 yr for the period September 1995 through October 1996. During periods of decreased
Trinity River flow and increased residence times, benthic inputs of ammonium and phosphate were 1 to 2 orders of magnitude
greater than Trinity River inputs and were the dominant input source of these nutrients to Trinity Bay. The sediments, a sink
for silicate when overlying water column concentrations of silicate were elevated, became a source of silicate to the overlying
waters of Trinity Bay under reduced flow, high salinity conditions. 相似文献

Estimation of net physical transport and hydraulic residence times for a coastal plain estuary using box models 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A box model based on salinity distributions and freshwater inflow measurements was developed and used to estimate net non-tidal physical circulation and hydraulic residence times for Patuxent River estuary, Maryland, a tributary estuary of Chesapeake Bay. The box model relaxes the usual assumption that salinity is at steady-state, an important improvement over previous box model studies, yet it remains simple enough to have broad appeal. Average monthly 2-dimensional net non-tidal circulation and residence times for 1986–1995 are estimated and related to river flow and salt water inflow as estimated by the box model. An important result is that advective exchange at the estuary mouth was not correlated with Patuxent River flow, most likely due to effects of offshore salinity changes in Chesapeake Bay. The median residence time for freshwater entering at the head of the estuary was 68 d and decreased hyperbolically with increasing river flow to 30 d during high flow. Estimates of residence times for down-estuary points of origin showed that, from the head of the estuary to its mouth, control of flushing changed from primarily river flow to other factors regulating the intensity of gravitational circulation. 相似文献

We present an analysis of X-ray variability in a flux-limited sample of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). Selected from our deep ROSAT survey, these QSOs span a wide range in redshift (0.1< z <3.2) and are typically very faint, so we have developed a method to constrain the amplitude of variability in ensembles of low signal-to-noise ratio light curves. We find evidence for trends in this variability amplitude with both redshift and luminosity. The mean variability amplitude declines sharply with luminosity, as seen in local active galactic nuclei (AGN), but with some suggestion of an upturn for the most powerful sources. We find tentative evidence that this is caused by redshift evolution, since the high-redshift QSOs ( z >0.5) do not show the anticorrelation with luminosity seen in local AGN. We speculate on the implications of these results for physical models of AGN and their evolution. Finally, we find evidence for X-ray variability in an object classified as a narrow-emission-line galaxy, suggesting the presence of an AGN. 相似文献

Abstract— Crystal‐bearing lunar spherules (CLSs) in lunar breccia (14313, 14315, 14318), soil (68001, 24105), and impact‐melt rock (62295) samples can be classified into two types: feldspathic and olivine‐rich. Feldspathic CLSs contain equant, tabular, or acicular plagioclase grains set in glass or a pyroxene‐olivine mesostasis; the less common olivine‐rich CLSs contain euhedral or skeletal olivine set in glass, or possess a barred‐olivine texture. Bulk‐chemical and mineral‐chemical data strongly suggest that feldspathic CLSs formed by impact melting of mixtures of ferroan anorthosite and Mg‐suite rocks that compose the feldspathic crust of the Moon. It is probable that olivine‐rich CLSs also formed by impact melting, but some appear to have been derived from distinctively magnesian lunar materials, atypical of the Moon's crust. Some CLSs contain reversely‐zoned “relic” plagioclase grains that were not entirely melted during CLS formation, thin (≤5 μm thick) rims of troilite or phosphate, and chemical gradients in glassy mesostases attributed to metasomatism in a volatile‐rich (Na‐K‐P‐rich) environment. Crystal‐bearing lunar spherules were rimmed and metasomatized prior to brecciation. Compound CLS objects are also present; these formed by low‐velocity collisions in an environment, probably an ejecta plume, that contained numerous melt droplets. Factors other than composition were responsible for producing the crystallinity of the CLSs. We agree with previous workers that relatively slow cooling rates and long ballistic travel times were critical features that enabled these impact‐melt droplets to partially or completely crystallize in free‐flight. Moreover, incomplete melting of precursor materials formed nucleation sites that aided subsequent crystallization. Clearly, CLSs do not resemble meteoritic chondrules in all ways. The two types of objects had different precursors and did not experience identical rimming processes, and vapor fractionation appears to have played a less important role in establishing the compositions of CLSs than of chondrules. However, the many detailed similarities between CLSs and chondrules indicate that it is more difficult to rule out an origin for some chondrules by impact melting than some have previously argued. Differences between CLSs, chondrules, and their host rocks possibly can be reconciled with an impact‐melt origin for some chondrules when different precursors, the higher gravity of the Moon compared to chondrite parent bodies, and the likely presence of nebular gas during chondrule formation are taken into account. 相似文献
