This paper addresses various issues concerning the modelling of solid–liquid–air coupling in multiphase porous media with an application to unsaturated soils. General considerations based on thermodynamics permit the derivation and discussion of the general form of field equations; two cases are considered: a three phase porous material with solid, liquid and gas, and a two phase porous material with solid, liquid and empty space. Emphasis is placed on the presentation of differences in the formulation and on the role of the gas phase. The finite element method is used for the discrete approximation of the partial differential equations governing the problem. The two formulations are then analysed with respect to a documented drainage experiment carried out by the authors. The merits and shortcomings of the two approaches are shown. ABSTRACT Using the example of the Isle of Skye in Scotland, we investigate the influence of pressure variations in upper-crustal magma reservoirs on the development of rift-type normal faulting around central volcanoes. The regional synmagmatic stress regime is of strike-slip type in Scotland during the Lower Tertiary. During a prolonged period of overall high pressure in the Skye magma reservoir (gabbro intrusion stage), crustal extension results from the injection of basaltic dykes parallel to the trend of the far-field maximum stress. During a subsequent period of pressure decrease in the reservoir (granites intrusion stage) normal faults trending parallel to the dykes are initiated. These faults tilt the upper-crustal blocks along with the former dyke swarm and associated lava pile. Finite-element modelling shows that a decrease of magma pressure in a circular cavity may lead, as in Skye, to a change from a regional strike-slip to a local rift-type normal stress regime.  相似文献

The climates of the mid-Holocene (MH), 6,000 years ago, and of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), 21,000 years ago, have extensively been simulated, in particular in the framework of the Palaeoclimate Modelling Intercomparion Project. These periods are well documented by paleo-records, which can be used for evaluating model results for climates different from the present one. Here, we present new simulations of the MH and the LGM climates obtained with the IPSL_CM5A model and compare them to our previous results obtained with the IPSL_CM4 model. Compared to IPSL_CM4, IPSL_CM5A includes two new features: the interactive representation of the plant phenology and marine biogeochemistry. But one of the most important differences between these models is the latitudinal resolution and vertical domain of their atmospheric component, which have been improved in IPSL_CM5A and results in a better representation of the mid-latitude jet-streams. The Asian monsoon’s representation is also substantially improved. The global average mean annual temperature simulated for the pre-industrial (PI) period is colder in IPSL_CM5A than in IPSL_CM4 but their climate sensitivity to a CO2 doubling is similar. Here we show that these differences in the simulated PI climate have an impact on the simulated MH and LGM climatic anomalies. The larger cooling response to LGM boundary conditions in IPSL_CM5A appears to be mainly due to differences between the PMIP3 and PMIP2 boundary conditions, as shown by a short wave radiative forcing/feedback analysis based on a simplified perturbation method. It is found that the sensitivity computed from the LGM climate is lower than that computed from 2 × CO2 simulations, confirming previous studies based on different models. For the MH, the Asian monsoon, stronger in the IPSL_CM5A PI simulation, is also more sensitive to the insolation changes. The African monsoon is also further amplified in IPSL_CM5A due to the impact of the interactive phenology. Finally the changes in variability for both models and for MH and LGM are presented taking the example of the El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is very different in the PI simulations. ENSO variability is damped in both model versions at the MH, whereas inconsistent responses are found between the two versions for the LGM. Part 2 of this paper examines whether these differences between IPSL_CM4 and IPSL_CM5A can be distinguished when comparing those results to palaeo-climatic reconstructions and investigates new approaches for model-data comparisons made possible by the inclusion of new components in IPSL_CM5A.  相似文献

Attribution of global near-surface temperature changes is revisited using simulations from the coupled model intercomparison project 5 and methodological improvements from the regularised optimal fingerprinting approach. The analysis of global mean temperature shows that changes can be robustly detected and attributed to anthropogenic influence. However, the differences between results from individual models and observations are found to be larger than the simulated internal variability in several cases. Discrimination between greenhouse gases and other anthropogenic forcings, based on the global mean only, is more difficult due to collinearity of temporal response patterns. Using spatio-temporal data provides less robust conclusions with respect to detection and attribution, as the results tend to deteriorate as the spatial resolution increases. More importantly, some inconsistencies between individual models and observations are found in this case. Such behaviour is not observed in a perfect model framework, where pseudo-observations and the expected response patterns are provided by the same model. However, using response patterns from a model other than the one used for pseudo-observations may lead to the same behaviour as real observations. Our results suggest that additional sources of uncertainty, such as modeling uncertainty or observational uncertainty, should not be neglected in detection and attribution.  相似文献

Massive deleterious impacts to human health are resulting from the use of arsenic-bearing groundwaters in South-East Asia deltas and elsewhere in the world for drinking, cooking and/or irrigation. In Bangladesh alone, a fifth of all deaths are linked to arsenicosis. In the natural and engineered subsurface environment, the fate of arsenic is, to a large extent, controlled by redox potential, pH, as well as total iron, sulfur and carbonate content, via sorption and coprecipitation on a variety of natural and engineered (nano)particles. In the present article, we address: (1) new insights in the sorption mechanisms of As on Fe(II) and Fe(III) nanophases recognized to play an important role in the microbial cycling of As and Fe; (2) artifacts often encountered in field and laboratory studies of As speciation due to the extreme redox sensitivity of the Fe-As-O-H phases; and (3) as a conclusion, the implications for water treatment. Indeed the specific reactivity of nanoparticles accounts not only for the As bioavailability within soils and aquifers, but also opens new avenues in water treatment.  相似文献

Generally, growth rates of living organisms are considered to be at steady state, varying only under environmental forcing factors. For example, these rates may be described as a function of light for plants or organic food resources for animals and these could be regulated (or not) by temperature or other conditions. But, what are the consequences for an individual's growth (and also for the population growth) if growth rate variations are themselves dynamic and not steady state? For organisms presenting phases of dormancy or long periods of stress, this is a crucial question. A dynamic perspective for quantifying short-term growth was explored using the daily growth record of the scallop Pecten maximus (L.). This species is a good biological model for ectotherm growth because the shell records growth striae daily. Independently, a generic mathematical function representing the dynamics of mean daily growth rate (MDGR) was implemented to simulate a diverse set of growth patterns. Once the function was calibrated with the striae patterns, the growth rate dynamics appeared as a forced damped oscillation during the growth period having a basic periodicity during two transitory phases (mean duration 43 days) and appearing at both growth start and growth end. This phase is most likely due to the internal dynamics of energy transfer within the organism rather than to external forcing factors. After growth restart, the transitory regime represents successive phases of over-growth and regulation. This pattern corresponds to a typical representation of compensatory growth, which from an evolutionary perspective can be interpreted as an adaptive strategy to coping with a fluctuating environment.  相似文献

This chapter is devoted to a discussion about the difficulties and even the impossibility to date the events that occurred during the transition from non-living matter to the first living cells. Nevertheless, the attempts to devise plausible scenarios accounting for the emergence of the main molecular devices and processes found in biology are presented including the role of nucleotides at early stages (RNA world). On the other hand, hypotheses on the development of early metabolisms, compartments and genetic encoding are also discussed in relation with their role in extant living organisms. The nature of the Last Common Ancestor is also presented as well as hypotheses on the evolution of viruses. Tidal forces acting on the Earth cause deformations and mass redistribution inside the planet involving surface motions and variation in the gravity field, which may be observed in geodetic experiments. Because for space geodesy it is now necessary to achieve the mm level in tidal displacements, we take into account the hydrostatic flattening of the Earth in the computation of the elasto-gravitational deformations. Analytical solutions are derived for the semi-diurnal tides on a slightly elliptical homogeneous incompressible elastic model. That simple analytical Earth’s model is not a realistic representation of any real planet, but it is useful to understand the physics of the problem and also to check numerical procedures. We rediscover and discuss the Love’s solutions and obtain new analytical solutions for the tangential displacement. We extend these analytical results to some geodetic responses of the Earth to tidal forces such as the perturbation of the surface gravity field, the tilt and the deviation of the vertical with reference to the Earth’s axis.  相似文献

In this work, we continue revising the theoretical basis ofnumerical models describing the transport of matter andenergy inside a porous dust-ice mixture at low temperature. Amodel of a light-absorbing near-surface layer of a comet nucleus isinvestigated. Gas transport is considered simultaneously with thesolution of the general heat transfer equation. Thequasi-stationary temperature distribution and the H2O massflux and sublimation rate are computed for a nucleus model ofcomet 19P/Borrelly at the Deep Space 1 (DS1) encounter. Theenergy is deposited in a layer of about 20 particle radii: Thiscorresponds to a solid-state greenhouse effect. The surfacetemperature of the layer-absorbing model as well as the gasproduction rate are significantly smaller than the ones in thesurface-absorbing model. An active fraction of 40–50% would berequired to explain the observed water production rate ofP/Borrelly with our layer-absorption model at the time of the DS1encounter.  相似文献
