The Ardara pluton as part of the Donegal batholith was intruded into Neoproterozoic metasediments and metadolerites at mid-crustal levels. The emplacement mechanism of the Ardara granite is very controversial, and mechanisms ranging from diapirism, ballooning and stoping followed by nested diapirism have been proposed. Magnetic fabrics, rock fabrics and K/Ar dating of micas are used here to constrain the emplacement history. The compositional zoning of the Ardara pluton is clearly reflected in the different bulk magnetic susceptibilities between the outer quartz monzodiorite and the central granodiorite, whereas the intervening tonalite is of intermediate nature. The magnetic carriers are characterized by the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility (AMS), thermomagnetic measurements and through high field analyses (HFA). The separation of the ferrimagnetic and paramagnetic contributions revealed that biotite and magnetite control the AMS in the quartz monzodiorite. Both minerals are oriented in such a way that their summed contribution is constructive and originates from the shape fabric of magnetite and the texture of biotite. Biotite is responsible mainly for the AMS in the tonalite and granodiorite. The magnetic foliation can be directly related to the macroscopic foliation and also to the D4 structures in the country rocks. The foliation is consistent with the geometry of the roughly circular shape and has a mostly steep to vertical dip. Towards the central granodiorite the magnetic foliation dies out, although plagioclase texture measurements indicate a weak magmatic shape fabric. With the exception of the tail, the Kmax axes (magnetic lineation) vary from steeply to gently plunging. The so-called lineation factor is approximately 1.01 and therefore points to a less significant axial symmetry. These observations coincide with strain estimates on mafic enclaves that show a very consistent pattern of K ∼0 flattening strain. Texture analyses of biotite and quartz additionally support the observations made by the strain analyses and the magnetic fabric data. Microstructural investigations give evidence that the fabrics are associated with the emplacement over a range of temperatures from truly magmatic to high-temperature solid-state conditions. The age of the intrusion is still under discussion, but a new cooling age was determined by K/Ar dating of biotite at 403.7±8 Ma corresponding to a temperature range between 450 and 300°C. For a mylonite along the southern contact between the Ardara pluton and the country rock a K/Ar muscovite age of 378.8±7 Ma indicates a minimum age for the shear zone when the Ardara pluton must have already been cooled down below 350±50°C. We present results on the identification of the optical counterpart of an ultrasoft X-ray source discovered with ROSAT . Two optical candidates – a galaxy and a star – are found within the error circle of the X-ray source position. Optical spectroscopy of the two candidates reveals that (a) the galaxy is a narrow-line Seyfert type 1 galaxy, and (b) the star is a late A-type or an early F-type. The F x F v ratio is too high for the star to be the counterpart of the X-ray source, but consistent with that for an active galaxy. Although higher-resolution X-ray imaging of the region is needed to definitely settle the question of the counterpart of the X-ray source, the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy is the best candidate. The spectral properties of the newly discovered narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy are also presented, including its extreme X-ray power-law spectral index of Γ≥4.  相似文献

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a layered transition-metal dichalcogenide, has been of special importance to the research community of geochemistry, materials and environmental chemistry, and geotechnical engineering. Understanding the oxidation behavior and charge-transfer mechanisms in MoS2 is important to gain better insight into the degradation of this mineral in the environment. In addition, understanding the insertion of metals into molybdenite and evaluation of charge-transfer mechanism and dynamics is important to utilize these minerals in technological applications. Furthermore, a detailed investigation of thermal oxidation behavior and metal-insertion will provide a basis to further explore and model the mechanism of adsorption of metal ions onto geomedia.  相似文献

Silica occurs in abundance in a variety of hydrothermal samples from the Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (TAG) hydrothermal mound, 26°N Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The water content, trace element chemistry, and mineralogy of crystalline silica from 15 different samples have been examined by vibrational spectroscopy and probe microanalysis. The samples are from: shallow subsurface ferric iron oxyhydroxide silica deposits (n=4), a fragment of an active white smoker chimney (n=1), anhydrite bearing hydrothermal breccias (n=2), pyrite silica breccias (n=3), and silicified wall rock breccias (n=5). Length-fast chalcedony occurs in association with variable quantities of ferric iron oxyhydroxides in hydrothermal breccias from the mound flanks, within shallower subsurface chert samples, and within white smoker chimney walls. Samples from the anhydrite zone contain textures which are suggestive of an origin involving replacement of anhydrite. Samples taken from TAG 1 and 5 from below the anhydrite zone contain no chalcedony. Instead they contain subhedral quartz crystals which show oscillatory zoning in aluminium. Two types of crystalline silica namely, type A and type B quartz, are defined on the basis of the infrared spectra in the OH region from 3200 cm−1 to 3600 cm−1. The type A quartz occurs beneath the anhydrite zone at TAG 1 and 5. We propose a model that relates specific varieties of crystalline silica to different thermal and chemical environments within the mound interior. Length-fast chalcedony occurs in an outer low temperature envelope across the top and sides of the mound. The common association between length-fast chalcedony and ferric iron oxyhydroxides suggests that chalcedony crystallization is favoured where catalysis by ferric iron can occur. The apparent suppression of fibrous silica at the expense of single quartz crystals with increasing depth is attributed to differing growth rates and degrees of supersaturation of silica-bearing solutions with increasing temperature within the mound. The transition from type A to type B single crystal growth is interpreted to occur at temperatures approaching ˜360 °C due to decreasing solubility of aluminium in quartz, so that aluminium is rendered unavailable for type A valence compensation. In order to constrain the temporal relationship between granite (sensu lato) emplacement and metamorphism, isotope work was carried out on the minerals zircon and apatite (U-Pb), garnet (Pb-Pb) and hornblende (Ar-Ar) from wall rock samples in the Shamva area in Zimbabwe. The area, encompassing parts of the Chinamora and Murehwa batholiths and a wedge-shaped greenstone belt segment in between, is commonly quoted in the literature as an example illustrating pluton emplacement processes and deformational models for the Archean. New U-Pb dating of apatite from a boudinaged pegmatite within mafic schists in the batholith-greenstone contact zone has yielded an age of 2619 +28/-24 Ma. This age is interpreted as the best estimation of the intrusion age of this unit, depending on the assumed closure temperature, and provides an upper age limit for the syntectonic emplacement of the now gneissic granites. Pb-Pb dating of late kinematic garnets in cordierite-bearing rocks within the greenstone belt wall rocks gives an age of 2623NJ Ma. Together, this timing of relatively late, syntectonic plutonism and metamorphic mineral growth at ca. 2.62 Ga compares well with existing zircon crystallization ages for felsic volcanics (2645dž Ma, 2643NJ Ma) and post-tectonic porphyritic monzogranites (2601ᆢ Ma). Ar-Ar hornblende ages for mafic schists from different areas within the greenstone belt wall rocks range between 2621 and 2498 Ma and have been interpreted to indicate mixing between metamorphic ages and cooling ages. The data support a geological model whereby volcanism and sedimentation are associated with an early phase of regional deformation at ca. 2.64 Ga, which may have started earlier and lasted longer, and evolves into the voluminous emplacement of granites (now gneissic granites) in the batholiths at approximately 2.62 Ga. Emplacement of post-tectonic tabular monzogranites takes place at ca. 2.60 Ga.  相似文献

Large, correlated, mass-dependent enrichments in the heavier isotopes of O, Cr, Fe, and Ni are observed in type-I (metal/metal oxide) cosmic spherules collected from the deep sea. Limited intraparticle variability of oxygen isotope abundances, typically <5‰ in δ18O, indicates good mixing of the melts and supports the application of the Rayleigh equation for the calculation of fractional evaporative losses during atmospheric entry. Fractional losses for oxygen evaporation from wüstite, assuming a starting isotopic composition equal to that of air (δ18O = 23.5‰; δ17O = 11.8‰), are in the range 55%-77%, and are systematically smaller than evaporative losses calculated for Fe (69%-85%), Cr (81%-95%), and especially Ni (45%-99%). However, as δ18O values increase, fractional losses for oxygen approach those of Fe, Cr, and Ni indicating a shift in the evaporating species from metallic to oxidized forms as the spherules are progressively oxidized during entry heating. The observed unequal fractional losses of O and Fe can be reconciled by allowing for a kinetic isotope mass-dependent fractionation of atmospheric oxygen during the oxidation process and/or that some metallic Fe may have undergone Rayleigh evaporation before oxidation began.In situ measurements of oxygen isotopic abundances were also performed in 14 type-S (silicate) cosmic spherules, 13 from the Antarctic ice and one from the deep sea. Additional bulk Fe and Cr isotopic abundances were determined for two type-S deep-sea spherules. The isotopic fractionation of Cr isotopes suggest appreciable evaporative loss of Cr, perhaps as a sulfide. The oxygen isotopic compositions for the type-S spherules range from δ18O = −2‰ to + 27‰. The intraspherule isotopic variations are typically small, ∼5% relative, except for the less-heated porphyritic spherules which have preserved large isotopic heterogeneities in at least one case. A plot of δ17O vs. δ18O values for these spherules defines a broad parallelogram bounded at higher values of δ17O by the terrestrial fractionation line, and at lower values of δ17O by a line parallel to it and anchored near the isotopic composition of δ18O = −2.5‰ and δ17O = −5‰. Lack of independent evidence for substantial evaporative losses suggests that much of this variation reflects the starting isotopic composition of the precursor materials, which likely resembled CO, CM, or CI chondrites. However, the enrichments in heavy isotopes indicate that some mixing with atmospheric oxygen was probably involved during atmospheric entry for some of the spherules. Isotopic fractionation due to evaporation of incoming grain is not required to explain most of the oxygen isotopic data for type-S spherules. However spherules with barred olivine textures that are thought to have experienced a more intense heating than the porphyritic ones might have undergone some distillation. Two cosmic spherules, one classified as a radial pyroxene type and the other showing a glassy texture, show unfractionated oxygen isotopic abundances. They are probably chondrule fragments that survived atmospheric entry unmelted.Possible reasons type-I spherules show larger degrees of isotopic fractionation than type-S spherules include: a) the short duration of the heating pulse associated with the high volatile content of the type-S spherule precursors compared to type-I spherules; b) higher evaporation temperatures for at least a refractory portion of the silicates compared to that of iron metal or oxide; c) lower duration of heating of type-S spherules compared to type-I spherules as a consequence of their lower densities.  相似文献

Summary Monthly precipitation trends of 160 stations in China from 1951–2002 have been analysed and interpolated. The Mann-Kendall trend test was applied to examine the monthly precipitation data. Significant positive and negative trends at the 90, 95, and 99 percent confidence levels were detected for numerous stations. The number, distribution, and direction of the trends varied from month to month.The detected trends were spatially interpolated by applying the Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolation method. The spatial presentation of the detected precipitation trends gives a better understanding of climatic changes or variations in China during the last 50 years. This is especially the case for highlighting the spatial structure of precipitation trends.A clustering of trends is observed in certain months, including distinct trend belts especially in east and north-east China. Nevertheless, positive as well as negative monthly trends can be noted simultaneously in different areas. The spatial interpolation of precipitation trend analysis results is a useful approach to give further understanding of the regional pattern of precipitation trends in China.  相似文献

Di-nitrogen fixation, measured in situ by the acetylene reduction technique, was shown to be associated with regular summer blooms of Oscillatoria erythraea in Mazatlán bay, a eutrophic tropical embayment on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. The Oscillatoria population density and the rate of di-nitrogen fixation per cell were of similar magnitude to those observed by other workers in the oligotrophic Caribbean Sea. Since the non-nitrogen limited fraction (Oscillatoria) of the total population was generally less than 10% and the nutrient supply to the bay is relatively abundant, di-nitrogen fixation does not appear to play an important role in the eutrophication of the bay.  相似文献

A precise knowledge of the angular resolution of scintillator arrays used to observe extended air showers (EAS) is of key importance in the search for VHE/UHE γ point sources. Four independent methods have been used to determine the mean resolution for which a value of ΔΘ63 of 0.8°(1.0°) at a proton threshold of 50 (40) TeV has been found for the HEGRA EAS-array.  相似文献
