The higher-order correlation functions for the concentrationfluctuations arising from a two-point-source configuration have beencalculated analytically within the context of the phenomenology of afluctuating plume model (viz., a meandering plume model that explicitlyincorporates internal fluctuations). Explicit expressions for thesecond-, third-, and fourth-order correlationfunctions between the concentrationfluctuations produced by two point sources are given in terms of the sourceseparation d and the five physically based parameters that define thegeneralized fluctuating plume model: namely, the absolute plume dispersion,a, which determines the outer plume length scale; the relative plume dispersion, r, which determines the inner plume length scale; the fluctuation intensity, ir, in relative coordinates, which determines the internal concentration fluctuation level; the correlation coefficient, r,between the positions of the centroids of the two interfering plumes; and,the correlation coefficient, r*, between the concentration fluctuationsof the two plumes in relative coordinates, which determines the degree ofinternal mixing of the two scalars. Furthermore, the form of the totalconcentration probability density function arising from the interferenceproduced by two point sources is presented. Predictions for the second-ordercorrelation function, , and for the total concentration probabilitydensity function have been compared with some new experimental data fora two-point-source configuration in grid turbulence generated in awater-channel simulation. The permeability of coal samples from Pittsburgh Seam was determined using carbon dioxide as the flowing fluid. The confining pressure was varied to cover a wide range of depths. The permeability was determined as a function of exposure time of carbon dioxide while the confining stress was kept constant. The porosities of the coal samples were found to be very low and most of the samples had porosities less than 1%. The permeability of these coal samples was very low—less than 1 μD. Since the objective of this study was to investigate the influence of CO2 exposure on coal permeability, it was necessary to increase the initial permeability of the coal samples by introducing a fracture. A longitudinal fracture was induced mechanically, and CT scans were taken to ensure that the fracture was present throughout the sample and that the sample was not damaged otherwise during the process. In this study, the permeability of coal was determined by using pressure transient methods. Two types of pressure pulses were used: A-spike and Sine-6 pressure transients. It was first established that the permeability of fractured coal samples did not change with exposure time when an inert gas (Argon) was used as the fluid medium in the experiments. However, the permeability of coal samples decreased significantly when carbon dioxide was used as the fluid medium. This reduction can be attributed to the coal swelling phenomenon. The results show that the permeability reduction in fractured coal samples can be over 90% of the original value, and the exposure time for such reductions can range from 1.5 days up to a week, typically about 2 days under laboratory conditions. The permeability decreased significantly with the increase in confining pressure. The higher confining pressure appears to close internal fractures causing a reduction in permeability. 相似文献

Mechanisms and kinetics of aqueous oxidation-reduction and dissolved O2 interaction in the presence of augite, biotite and hornblende were studied in oxic and anoxic solutions at pH 1–9 at 25°C. Oxidation of surface iron on the minerals coincided with both surface release of Fe+2 and by reduction of Fe+3 in solution. Reaction with iron silicates consumed dissolved oxygen at a rate that increased with decreasing pH. Both Fe+3 and O2 consumption were shown to be controlled by coupled electron-cation transfer reactions of the form; and where M is a cation of charge +z. The spontaneous reduction of aqueous Fe+3in the presence of precipitated Fe(OH)3bracketed the surface oxidation standard half cell between +0.33 and +0.52 volts. Concurrent hydrolysis reactions involving cation release from the iron silicates were suppressed by the above reactions. Calculated oxidation depths in the minerals varied between 12 and 80Å and were apparently controlled by rates of solid-state cation diffusion. 相似文献

The influence of different environmental stresses, including salinity (5-35‰), tidal cycle (6/6, 12/12 and 24/24 h of high/low tidal regimes) and nutrient addition (1-6 times background nitrogen and phosphorus content) on Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and Aegiceras corniculatum grown in sediment contaminated with spent lubricating oil (7.5 L m(-2)) were investigated. The oil-treated 1-year-old mangrove seedlings subject to low (5‰) and high (35‰) salinity had significantly more reduction in growth, more release of superoxide radical (O2·-) and higher activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) than those subject to moderate salinity (15‰). Extended flooding (24/24 h of high/low tidal regime) enhanced O2·- release and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in both oil-treated species but had little negative effects on biomass production (P>0.05) except the stem of A. corniculatum (P=0.012). The addition of nutrients had no beneficial or even posed harmful effects on the growth and cellular responses of the oil-treated seedlings. 相似文献

A meandering plume model that explicitly incorporates the effects of small-scale structure in the instantaneous plume has been formulated. The model requires the specification of two physically based input parameters; namely, the meander ratio,M, which is dependent on the ratio of the meandering plume dispersion to the instantaneous relative plume dispersion and, a relative in-plume fluctuation measure,k, that is related inversely to the fluctuation intensity in relative coordinates. Simple analytical expressions for crosswind profiles of the higher moments (including the important shape parameters such as fluctuation intensity, skewness, and kurtosis) and for the concentration pdf have been derived from the model. The model has been tested against some field data sets, indicating that it can reproduce many key aspects of the observed behavior of concentration fluctuations, particularly with respect to modeling the change in shape of the concentration pdf in the crosswind direction.List of Symbols
