The sediment at the interface immediately beneath the water column is distinct from deeper-lying sediments in its properties and, at least quantitatively, in the processes driving diagenesis. Progress in understanding the sediment-water interface can be based on consideration of fundamentals of biogeochemical particle / fluid interactions and on application of certain biological techniques especially suited to this challenging portion of the sediment column. This article reports results achieved by combining theoretical fundamentals and specialized experimental techniques in the study of the interface from selected depositional environments. For fine-grained and sandy deposits from fresh-water to coastal marine environments, the interface is characterized by exaggerated microrelief, great porosity, and significant biological alteration. Additional application of this research approach is poised to further our understanding of engineering, and acoustic and xenochemical responses of sedimentary materials, with special emphasis on the influence of the bio-organic phase of the interface upon its fabric and physical properties. 相似文献

A location of the Viking 1 Lander on the surface of Mars has been determined by correlating topographic features in the lander pictures with similar features in the Viking orbiter pictures. Radio tracking data narrowed the area of search for correlating orbiter and lander features and an area was found on the orbiter pictures in which there is good agreement with topographic features on the lander pictures. This location, when plotted on the 1:250,000 scale photomosaic of the Yorktown Region of Mars (U.S. Geological Survey, 1977) is at 22.487°N latitude and 48.041°W longitude. 相似文献

Evaluation of trends in time-series, such as precipitation or ground water levels, is an essential element in many hydrologic evaluations, including water resource studies and planning efforts. The cumulative rainfall departure (CRD) from normal rainfall is a concept sometimes utilized to evaluate the temporal correlation of rainfall with surface water or ground water levels. Permutations of the concept have been used to estimate recharge or aquifer storativity, and in attempts to explain declining ground water levels. The cumulative departure concept has hydrologic meaning in the short term, as a generalized evaluation of either meager or abundant rainfall, and when utilized in connection with a detailed water budget analysis can be used in a predictive fashion. However, the concept can be misapplied if extended over lengthy periods. Misapplication occurs because of several factors including the separation of the mean and median in nonnormal distributions, how the choice of beginning and end points of the data can affect the results, the lack of consideration that above-average rainfall can reset the hydrologic system without mathematically eliminating the accumulated deficit, and the lack of support for the necessary inference that rainfall events and hydrologic levels widely separated in time are linked. Standard statistical techniques are available to reliably determine trends and can provide rigorous statistical measures of the significance of conclusions. Misuse of the CRD concept can lead to erroneous and unsupported conclusions regarding hydrologic relationships and can potentially result in misguided water resource decision-making. 相似文献

Large-scale marsh restoration efforts were conducted to restore normal salt marsh structure and function to degraded marshes
(i.e., former salt hay farms) in the mesohaline lower Delaware Bay. While nekton response has been previously evaluated for
the marsh surface and subtidal creeks in these marshes, little effort has been focused on intertidal creeks. Nekton response
in intertidal creeks was evaluated by sampling with seines to determine if restored (i.e., former salt hay farms restored
in 1996) and reference (i.e., natural or relatively undisturbed) salt marshes were utilized by intertidal nekton in a similar
manner. The overall nekton assemblage during June–October 2004–2005 was generally comprised of the same species in both the
restored and reference marshes. Intertidal creek catches in both marsh types consisted primarily ofFundulus heteroclitus andMenidia menidia, with varying numbers of less abundant transient species present. Transient nekton were more abundant at restored marshes
than reference marshes, but in insufficient numbers to cause differences in nekton assemblages. In both marsh types, low tide
stages were characterized by resident nekton, dominated byF. heteroclitus, while high tide stages were characterized by a variable mix of transient and resident nekton. Assemblage level analyses
indicated that intertidal creeks in restored and reference marshes were generally utilized in a similar manner by a similar
nekton assemblage, so restoration efforts were deemed successful. This is in agreement with multiple comparative studies from

Laboratory experiments showed that individual growth rate of the deposit-feeding polychaete, Capitella capitata (type 1) can be predicted by rate of organic nitrogen supply (ration) of detritus to the animals. The rate at which detritus is available to a deposit-feeder, whether by sedimentation to the bottom, or decomposition of otherwise undigestable components via microbial activity, or production rate of microbes themselves, is important and not just the concentrations of limiting substrate of different detritus sources. Even so, the portion of total caloric content of the detritus that can be utilized by a deposit-feeder—approximated by the ‘available’ caloric content—also contributes to limiting growth. However, available caloric content usually is low when nitrogen content is low, as in the case of vascular plant detritus. Trophic transfer efficiency (net production/food supplied) is a measurement of food chain transfer that is usually calculated in carbon or caloric units. If one is interested in comparing energy or carbon flow in food chains, then use of these parameters is appropriate; if one is interested in comparing the efficiencies of different species, then calculations must be made using nutritional factors limiting growth. 相似文献
