Ratios of d- to l-amino acids in acid hydrolysates from foraminifera of two deep-sea cores from the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean increase with depth and consequently with age over a span from 40,000 to 2,000,000 yr. The changing ratios do not seem to follow first-order reversible rate laws. Valine, leucine and glutamic acid apparently racemize (isoleucine epimerizes) at slower rates than do phenylalanine, alanine, aspartic acid and proline. The general relative order for rates of racemization of total (free and bound) amino acids may depend on the electron-withdrawing capacity of the R substituents of the amino acids and on the rates with which the amino acids are naturally hydrolyzed. In contrast to the total amino acids, the free amino acids in these samples are more extensively racemized, probably as a result of various catalytic and hydrolytic reactions.Previous related work based on ion-exchange chromatography has considered only ratios of alloisoleucine to isoleucine. With the gas chromatographic method used here, d/l ratios of all common asymmetric amino acids can be estimated. Measurement of the extent of racemization of amino acids in marine sediments seems to provide the basis for a geochronological tool covering the last few million years.  相似文献

The spontaneous deposition of short-lived radon decay products onto solid surfaces (“collectors”) provides the basis for a simple and efficient way of prospecting for uranium. The alpha activity of two of the decay products, 218Po and 214Po, can be measured by conventional counting techniques following the exposure of a collector to a radon source. Laboratory studies have shown: (a) radon decay products can be collected on a wide variety of materials; (b) the number of radon decay products increases with the collector surface area; (c) a negative charge applied to the collectors enhances the number of decay products collected; (d) the shape of the collectors is relatively unimportant; and (e) reproducibility is about ± 5% of the measured value.Field tests on known uranium anomalies involved suspending collectors for an overnight exposure, in either covered holes or inverted containers buried in soil. Subsequent removal of the collectors was immediately followed by counting the alpha activity. Anomalies were readily detected at three different test sites. Replicate measurements at selected sites both on an hour-to-hour and on a day-to-day basis showed remarkably good agreement. Some anomalies were also outlined using activity measurements from collectors suspended above soil aliquots in sealed containers.Because the half-lives of two of the thoron (220Rn) decay products are much longer than those of the radon (222Rn) decay products, a thoron correction can be applied to the original activity measured from the collectors, thus discriminating against thoron in thorium-rich terrains.The counting of radon decay products deposited onto collectors is an effective method for delineating radon anomalies in uranium exploration. The field techniques are simple to apply, and results are available after very short exposure times (about 18 hours) and after short counting intervals (5 minutes).  相似文献

A new set of parameters for the total plate tectonic reconstruction of South America and south central Africa is presented: euler pole 46.75°N, 32.65°W; rotation angle 56.40°. This fit is constrained by at least three pre-drift tectonic features crossing from one continent to the other: (1) the geophysically defined eastern and western boundaries of the submarine Jurassic Outeniqua Basin (South Africa) and the Falkland Plateau Basin; (2) the Late Precambrian transcurrent fault and mylonite belts of Pernambuco (Brazil) and Foumban (West Africa); and (3) the Triassic northern tectonic front of the Cape Fold Belt and the major morphological feature on the Falkland Plateau with which it is closely lined up. Isotopic ages of Falkland Plateau gneisses correspond to Cape Pluton and Cape Fold Belt ages, suggesting their palaeoposition was within the realm of the Cape Fold Belt.In addition, the bathymetrically and geophysically defined northeastern apex of the Falkland Plateau fits into the re-entrant angle defined on the South African margin by the steep southeast-facing sheared Agulhas margin and the southern face of the Tugela Cone. Simultaneously known Precambrian outcrops in northeastern Brazil and in the Gulf of Benin area of West Africa are juxtaposed rather than overlapped. Reconstructions producing a closer fit of these cratonic areas are considered untenable.  相似文献

Using a 25-year record of monitoring data, we show that recent climate change has affected the thermal properties and oxygen content of seven lakes in south-central Ontario, Canada, and five lakes in north-central Wisconsin, USA. Coherent patterns in autumnal lake warming were driven by increased autumn air temperature in both lake districts. Temperature increases were restricted to the epilimnion and metalimnion of the lakes, resulting in increased thermal stability of the water column. Mixing depths also decreased over the study period. Shallower mixing depths in the Ontario lakes were due to climate-driven increases in lake-water dissolved organic carbon concentrations. Collectively, changes in the thermal regime of the lakes suggest autumn mixing of the water column may be delayed. Metalimnetic oxygen also increased in the Wisconsin lakes, perhaps in response to increased algal production as lake thermal regimes changed. The response of individual lakes to climate change was modified by lake chemistry in the Ontario lake district and by lake chemistry and morphometry in the Wisconsin lake district. Our results demonstrate coherent lake response to climate change and highlight the importance of both regional and local factors in regulating individual lake response to global climate change.  相似文献

Frequency-dependent nudging is applied to a coarse resolution (nominal 1°) global ocean model to suppress its drift and bias, and the impact of the nudging on the skill of the model is assessed. The nudging is applied to temperature and salinity in frequency bands centred on 0 and 1 cycles per year. As expected, the nudging significantly reduces the biases in the long-term mean and annual cycle of temperature, salinity, and sea level. By comparing the simulated (i) sea surface temperature with operational analyses based on observations, (ii) vertical profiles of temperature and salinity with observations made by Argo floats, and (iii) sea level with altimeter observations, it is shown that the skill of the model in simulating variability about the annual cycle is also improved. The potential benefit of applying frequency-dependent nudging to the ocean component of a coupled atmosphere–ocean model is discussed.  相似文献

If solar radiation management (SRM) were ever implemented, feedback of the observed climate state might be used to adjust the radiative forcing of SRM in order to compensate for uncertainty in either the forcing or the climate response. Feedback might also compensate for unexpected changes in the system, e.g. a nonlinear change in climate sensitivity. However, in addition to the intended response to greenhouse-gas induced changes, the use of feedback would also result in a geoengineering response to natural climate variability. We use a box-diffusion dynamic model of the climate system to understand how changing the properties of the feedback control affect the emergent dynamics of this coupled human–climate system, and evaluate these predictions using the HadCM3L general circulation model. In particular, some amplification of natural variability is unavoidable; any time delay (e.g., to average out natural variability, or due to decision-making) exacerbates this amplification, with oscillatory behavior possible if there is a desire for rapid correction (high feedback gain). This is a challenge for policy as a delayed response is needed for decision making. Conversely, the need for feedback to compensate for uncertainty, combined with a desire to avoid excessive amplification of natural variability, results in a limit on how rapidly SRM could respond to changes in the observed state of the climate system.  相似文献

For sixteen years following the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill adult returns of pink salmon in Prince William Sound, Alaska were monitored to assess spill effects on survival. No evidence of spill effects was detected for either intertidal or whole-stream spawning fish. From 1989 through 2004 mean densities for oiled and reference streams tracked each other, illustrating similar responses of oiled and reference stream adult populations to naturally changing oceanographic and climactic conditions. Hatchery fish strayed into the study streams, but similar incursions occurred in oiled and reference streams, and their presence was compensated for to eliminate their influence on determining the success of the returning natural populations. These results, showing no detectable effects of oiling on pink salmon spawning populations, are supported by published field studies on pink salmon incubation success in oiled streams.  相似文献

The state of the upper mantle beneath southern Africa   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2  
We present a new upper mantle seismic model for southern Africa based on the fitting of a large (3622 waveforms) multi-mode surface wave data set with propagation paths significantly shorter (≤ 6000 km) than those in globally-derived surface wave models. The seismic lithosphere beneath the cratonic region of southern Africa in this model is about 175 ± 25 km thick, consistent with other recent surface wave models, but significantly thinner than indicated by teleseismic body-wave tomography. We determine the in situ geotherm from kimberlite nodules from beneath the same region and find the thermal lithosphere model that best fits the nodule data has a mechanical boundary layer thickness of 186 km and a thermal lithosphere thickness of 204 km, in very good agreement with the seismic measurement. The shear wave velocity determined from analyzes of the kimberlite nodule compositions agree with the seismic shear wave velocity to a depth of 150 km. However, the shear wave velocity decrease at the base of the lid seen in the seismic model does not correspond to a change in mineralogy. Recent experimental studies of the shear wave velocity in olivine as a function of temperature and period of oscillation demonstrate that this wave speed decrease can result from grain boundary relaxation at high temperatures at the period of seismic waves. This decrease in velocity occurs where the mantle temperature is close to the melting temperature (within 100 °C).  相似文献
