Although the theory of Roche 1847 for the tidal disruption limits of orbiting satellites assumes a fluid body, a length to diameter of exactly 2.07:1, and a particular body orientation, the theory is commonly applied to the satellites of the Solar System and to small asteroids and comets passing nearby a planet. Clearly these bodies are neither fluid nor generally are that elongated, so a more appropriate theory is needed. Here we present exact analytical results for the distortion and disruption limits of solid spinning ellipsoidal bodies subjected to tidal forces, using the Drucker-Prager strength model with zero cohesion. It is the appropriate model for dry granular materials such as sands and rocks, for rubble-pile asteroids and comets, and for larger satellites, asteroids and comets where the cohesion can be ignored. This study uses the same approach as the studies of spin limits for solid ellipsoidal bodies given in [Holsapple, K.A., 2001. Icarus 154, 432-448; Holsapple, K.A., 2004. Icarus 172, 272-303]. It is a static theory that predicts conditions for breakup and predicts the nature of the deformations at the limit state, but does not track the dynamics of the body as it comes apart. The strength is characterized by a single material parameter associated with an angle of friction, which can range from zero to 90°. The case with zero friction angle has no shear strength whatsoever, so it is then the model of a fluid or gas. The case of 90° represents a material that cannot fail in shear, but still has zero tensile strength. Typical dry soils have angles of friction of 30°-40°. Since the static fluid case is included in the theory as a special case, the classical results of Roche [Roche, E.A., 1847. Acad. Sci. Lett. Montpelier. Mem. Section Sci. 1, 243-262] and Jeans [Jeans, J.H., 1917. Mem. R. Astron. Soc. London 62, 1-48] are included and re-derived in their entirety; but the general solid case has much more variety and applicability. We consider both the spin-locked case, appropriate for most satellites of the Solar System; and the zero spin case, a possible case for a passing stray body. Detailed plots of many special cases are presented, in terms of shape, orientation and mass densities. A very typical result gives a closest approach d=1.5(ρ/ρP)1/3R in terms of the planet radius R, and the satellite and planet mass densities ρ and ρP. We also use the theory to distinguish between conditions allowing global shape changes leading to new equilibrium states, or those leading to complete disruption. We apply the theory to the potentially hazardous Asteroid 99942 Apophis due to pass very near the Earth in 2029, and conclude it is extremely unlikely to experience any tidal readjustments during its passage. The states of many of the satellites of the Solar System are compared to the theory, and we find that all are well within their tidal disruption limits for expected values of the internal friction.  相似文献

Tributaries may either ameliorate or exacerbate the geomorphic and ecologic impacts of flow regulation by altering the flux of water and sediment into the flow‐regulated mainstem. To capture the effects of tributary influences on a flow regulated river, long‐term discharge and cross‐sectional data are used to assess the geomorphic and hydrologic impacts of impoundment. In addition, the use of the short‐lived cosmogenic radioisotope 7Be (half‐life 53·4 days) to link sediment transport dynamics to benthic macroinvertebrate community structure is evaluated. It is found that the 7Be activity of transitional bed load sediment is highly seasonal and reflects both variations in activity of sediment sources and limited sediment residence time within the junction. Benthic communities also exhibit a strong seasonal variability. In the spring, neither the 7Be activity of the sediment, nor benthic communities exhibit clear relationships with sample site location. In contrast, during the late summer the ratio of Ephemeroptera (mayflies)/Trichoptera (caddisflies) decreased significantly below tributary junctions. This decrease in benthic community ratio was driven by increases in caddisfly abundance and was strongly correlated with the presence of recently 7Be tagged transitional bedload sediment. These observations are probably associated with the presence of coarse, stable, and unembedded substrate downstream of tributaries and the rapid turnover of sediment that may also be associated with a rapid flux in nutrients or seston. The results show that tributaries are impacting the flow‐regulated mainstem and that these impacts are reflected in the benthic community structure and in the 7Be activity of transitional bed load sediment. Moreover, the observed reduction in competence and capacity of the mainstem following flood control suggests that these spatial discontinuities may be a consequence of impoundment. In August 2002, the near-Earth Asteroid 2002 NY40, made its closest approach to the Earth. This provided an opportunity to study a near-Earth asteroid with a variety of instruments. Several of the telescopes at the Maui Space Surveillance System were trained at the asteroid and collected adaptive optics images, photometry and spectroscopy. Analysis of the imagery reveals the asteroid is triangular shaped with significant self-shadowing. The photometry reveals a 20-h period and the spectroscopy shows that the asteroid is a Q-type.  相似文献

We present an extensive new network of ring-width chronologies, comprising data from 100 sites within the Austrian Eastern Alps, made up of multiple tree species. Principal components analysis and cluster analysis were used to identify five separate high-frequency tree-growth signals from these data. Tree-growth variability at these sites is explained by site altitude and species differences that moderate the effects of the annually varying climatic forcing on tree growth. Recently developed, two-century long gridded climate data sets for the Greater Alpine Region were used to assess the relationship between climate and tree growth. Tree growth at low altitudes is controlled mainly by spring-summer moisture availability. At high altitudes precipitation is no longer a limiting factor and growth is mostly determined by summer temperature. In the intermediate altitudinal range, we did not find any direct relationships with specific climatic variables. High-altitude chronologies suitable for reconstructing past temperatures and low-altitude chronologies suitable for reconstructing past precipitation were identified.  相似文献

Local ecological knowledge (LEK) has been recognised as an important source of information for resource management in data-poor fisheries. Our case study of the Foveaux Strait dredge oyster fishery in New Zealand shows LEK can also make a significant contribution to the management of data-rich fisheries, but highlights the importance of appropriate data collection design and interpretation and presentation of LEK. We formalise a structure for interpreting LEK, illustrate the importance of design by comparing two LEK studies, and discuss how the inclusion of LEK into the fisheries plan process has provided unexpected benefits for better management of the fishery.  相似文献
