This paper presents the results of a survey of public awareness of marine environmental issues within the context of the UK's National Maritime Museum. It was found that public interest in marine environmental issues is significant, but that gaps exist in terms of issue-specific awareness and that the availability of independent information on marine issues is limited. It is concluded that there are significant opportunities to develop the Museum's role in raising public awareness of marine environmental issues that build on its current activities and that of the Museum's partners.  相似文献

A carving of the indoor main altar of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague (Czech Republic) is made of the opuka stone—a clayey–calcareous silicite—which now exhibits the development of decay phenomena such as the formation of salt-laden case-hardened subsurface layer (approx. 150 mm thick), with detachment of the case-hardened layer manifested by blistering and/or flaking. Formation of this gypsum-rich layer is linked to the reaction of components (SO2) from polluted air (both outdoor and indoor) and from the rock itself (calcium ion from calcite). Development of brittle damage in the subsurface layer and underlying stone is interpreted based on the results from previous environmental monitoring in the Cathedral’s interior, which indicated highly fluctuating temperature and humidity, resulting in a hygrothermal stress in the material described by the “double-layer sandwich” model. The sensitivity of the studied stone to the above-mentioned processes is evidenced by its microstructural properties, specifically parameters of the pore spaces which indicate an extremely high susceptibility to damage by the actions of freezing water and/or salt crystallisation.  相似文献

Jarosite is an important mineral on Earth, and possibly on Mars, where it controls the mobility of iron, sulfate and potentially toxic metals. Atomistic simulations have been used to study the incorporation of Al3+, and the M2+ impurities Cd, Cu and Zn, in the (0 1 2) and (0 0 1) surfaces of jarosite. The calculations show that the incorporation of Al on an Fe site is favorable on all surfaces in which terminal Fe ions are exposed, and especially on the (0 0 1) [Fe3(OH)3]6+ surface. Incorporation of Cd, Cu or Zn on a K site balanced by a K vacancy is predicted to stabilize the surfaces, but calculated endothermic solution energies and the high degree of distortion of the surfaces following incorporation suggest that these substitutions will be limited. The calculations also suggest that incorporation of Cd, Cu and Zn on an Fe site balanced by an OH vacancy, or by coupled substitution on both K and Fe sites, is unfavorable, although this might be compensated for by growth of a new layer of jarosite or goethite, as predicted for bulk jarosite. The results of the simulations show that surface structure will exert an influence on uptake of impurities in the order Cu > Cd > Zn, with the most favorable surfaces for incorporation being (0 1 2) [KFe(OH)4]0 and (0 0 1) [Fe3(OH)3]6+.  相似文献

Oxygen exchange experiments have been performed between single crystals of sanidine feldspar and oxygen gas enriched in 18O, at temperatures in the range 869–1053 °C, total pressure 1 atmosphere, for times up to 28 days. Oxygen isotope diffusion profiles in a direction perpendicular to (001) were determined with an ion microprobe. The experimental data obey a single Arrhenius relationship of the form D = 8.4 × 10−11 exp. (−245 ± 15 kJ mol−1/RT) m2s−1. The results indicate that oxygen diffusion in anhydrous sanidine feldspar is marginally slower than oxygen diffusion in anhydrous anorthite. Comparison with published atomistic simulation studies suggests that oxygen transport in feldspar is by an interstitial mechanism. Received: 17 October 1997 / Accepted: 6 July 1998  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper examines two key dimensions of the impact of immigration for Australia and related policy aspects. One is sub-national and the other is national. They are, first, the regional location aspects of immigration and, second, the aggregate unemployment implications of immigration. These are chosen so as to focus on two important issues that condition public attitudes towards immigration. In relation to the first, there is a common positive view that channelling migration towards regional areas assists regional development and reduces pressure on metropolitan areas. The paper reviews regional concepts embodied in Australian immigration policy and the ways in which visa arrangements have implemented policies geared towards the regional dispersal of immigrants. Using official data, it discusses the demographic impacts of these policies and, in particular, considers the extent to which immigrants to regional Australia remain there over the longer term. In relation to unemployment, a common concern is that immigrants take jobs from local workers. The paper examines—using statistical regression methodology—the relationship between immigration and national aggregate unemployment in Australia. It evaluates the net consequences of immigration for both existing residents and new arrivals together. The paper concludes that, with good policy design in each case, regional location encouragement can be effective for immigrants and that immigrants need not take more jobs than they create. The analysis demonstrates that mixed-methods approaches to important social science issues can be productive, and helpful also for policy. Evidence, such as that presented in this paper, offers a powerful basis from which to counter negative public and political discourses surrounding immigration in contemporary Australia.  相似文献

Summary In a series of triaxial experiments we have measuredV p ,V s and volumetric strain simultaneously in dilating dry and saturated rocks. For the first time these data permit quantitative comparison of seismic velocities or their ratio and dilatant volumetric strain. In air-dry samplesV p /V s decreases by a few per cent at strains of 10–3; in saturated materials with high pore pressure,V p /V s increases by a comparable amount. Decreases in seismic velocity ratio are difficult to generate in initially saturated rocks even with low pore pressures and at strain rates of 10–4/sec. A liquid-vapor transition will not produce a significant drop inV p /V s . If dilatancy and fluid flow are responsible for seismic travel time anomalies prior to earthquakes, our results suggest that such anomalies will occur only in regions where pore fluid source to sink dimensions are of the order of 10 km or more, or in regions where the rocks are not saturated to begin with.  相似文献

Estimating the mass of a meteoroid passing through the Earth's atmosphere is essential to determining potential meteorite fall positions. High‐resolution fireball images from dedicated camera networks provide the position and timing for fireball bright flight trajectories. There are two established mass determination methods: the photometric and the dynamic. A new approach is proposed, based on the dynamic method. A dynamic optimization initially constrains unknown meteoroid characteristics which are then used in a parametric model for an extended Kalman filter. The extended Kalman filter estimates the position, velocity, and mass of the meteoroid body throughout its flight, and quantitatively models uncertainties. Uncertainties have not previously been modeled so explicitly and are essential for determining fall distributions for potential meteorites. This two‐step method aims to automate the process of mass determination for application to any trajectory data set and has been applied to observations of the Bunburra Rockhole fireball. The new method naturally handles noisy raw data. Initial and terminal bright flight mass results are consistent with other works based on the established photometric method and cosmic ray analysis. A full analysis of fragmentation and the variability in the heat‐transfer coefficient will be explored in future versions of the model.  相似文献

Due to the discovery of the evaporitic environment on the Martian surface, there is a reasonable possibility that evaporites served (or still serve) as habitats for microbial life if ever present on Mars. At the very least, if no signatures of extant life exist within these rocks, it may sustain molecular remnants as evidence for living organisms in the past. β-Carotene, among other carotenoids, could be such a suitable biomarker. In this study, Raman micro-spectroscopy was tested as a nondestructive method of determining the presence of β-carotene in experimentally prepared evaporitic matrices. Samples prepared by mixing β-carotene with powdered gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), halite (NaCl) and epsomite (MgSO4·7H2O) were analyzed using a 785 nm excitation source. Various concentrations of β-carotene in the matrices were investigated to determine the lowest β-carotene content detectable by Raman micro-spectroscopy. Mixtures were also measured with a laser beam permeating the crystals of gypsum and epsomite in order to evaluate the possibility of identifying β-carotene inside the mineral matrix.We were able to obtain a clear β-carotene signal at the 10 mg kg−1 concentration level—the number of registered β-carotene Raman bands differed depending on the particular mineral matrix. Spectral signatures of β-carotene were detected even when analyzing samples containing 1 mg kg−1 of this molecule. The 10-100 mg kg−1 of β-carotene in mineral matrices (halite, epsomite) was detected when analyzed through the monocrystal of gypsum and epsomite, respectively. These results will aid both in-situ analyses on Mars and sample analyses on Earth.  相似文献
