Abstract— We have measured excess Ir and depletion of 14C, two independent indicators of cosmic material, in peat cores from the central Tunguska impact site. Both Ir and 14C show pronounced anomalies in the same stratigraphical depth interval. We have estimated an integral deposition of nonradioactive cosmogenic C of 6.8 ± 1.0 mg C cm?2, and an integrated Ir deposition of 5.9 ± 1.2 pg Ir cm?2. The very high C/Ir ratio and a deduced δ13C value of +55 ± 10% relative to V Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB) of the impactor material found in this study points towards a cometary type impactor, rather than a chondritic or achondritic asteroidal type impactor.  相似文献

Our ability to adapt to changes in groundwater quality, arising from a changing climate and/or local pressures, is dependent on comprehension of the governing controls of spatial variation in groundwater chemistry. This paper presents results of an assessment of dominant hydro-geochemical processes controlling groundwater chemical composition, using an integrated application of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) of a major ion dataset of groundwater from lower Shire River valley, Malawi. The area is in the southernmost part of the western section of the East African Rift System (EARS) and has localised occurrence of saline groundwater. HCA classified samples into three main clusters (C1-C3) according to their dominant chemical composition: C1 (dominant composition: Na-Cl; median TDS: 3436 mg L−1), C2 (dominant composition: Na-HCO3; median TDS: 966 mg L−1) and C3 (dominant composition: alkali earths-HCO3; median TDS: 528 mg L−1). These clusters were in turn described by the principal components PC1, PC3 and PC2, respectively, resulting from the PCA. The results of the PCA and geochemical interpretation suggest that the spatial variation of groundwater quality in the area is influenced by the following processes: C3 samples result mainly from H2CO3 weathering of aluminosilicate minerals by percolating water supersaturated with CO2. In addition to aluminosilicate weathering, C2 samples are influenced by the processes of cation exchange of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the water for Na+ on clay minerals, and carbonate precipitation. The increase in ionic strength of C2 samples is attributed to mixing with high TDS groundwater in proximity with C2 samples. The saline/brackish C1 groundwater results from the processes of evaporation (for samples with high water table close to the Shire marshes) and dissolution of Cl and SO4-evaporative salts followed by mineralised seep from sedimentary Karoo and Cretaceous Lupata sandstones.  相似文献

The spin up and relaxation of an autumn upwelling event on the Beaufort slope is investigated using a combination of oceanic and atmospheric data and numerical models. The event occurred in November 2002 and was driven by an Aleutian low storm. The wind field was strongly influenced by the pack-ice distribution, resulting in enhanced winds over the open water of the Chukchi Sea. Flow distortion due to the Brooks mountain range was also evident. Mooring observations east of Barrow Canyon show that the Beaufort shelfbreak jet reversed to the west under strong easterly winds, followed by upwelling of Atlantic Water onto the shelf. After the winds subsided a deep eastward jet of Atlantic Water developed, centered at 250 m depth. An idealized numerical model reproduces these results and suggests that the oceanic response to the local winds is modulated by a propagating signal from the western edge of the storm. The disparity in wave speeds between the sea surface height signal—traveling at the fast barotropic shelf wave speed—versus the interior density signal—traveling at the slow baroclinic wave speed—leads to the deep eastward jet. The broad-scale response to the storm over the Chukchi Sea is investigated using a regional numerical model. The strong gradient in windspeed at the ice edge results in convergence of the offshore Ekman transport, leading to the establishment of an anti-cyclonic gyre in the northern Chukchi Sea. Accordingly, the Chukchi shelfbreak jet accelerates to the east into the wind during the storm, and no upwelling occurs west of Barrow Canyon. Hence the storm response is fundamentally different on the Beaufort slope (upwelling) versus the Chukchi slope (no upwelling). The regional numerical model results are supported by additional mooring data in the Chukchi Sea.  相似文献

Berm formation and morphological development of the beach face have been observed during a neap–neap tidal cycle on the gently sloping and accreting beach at Vejers, Denmark. During the field campaign, an intertidal bar migrated onshore and stabilized as a berm on the foreshore. A new intertidal bar occurred on the lower beach face, migrated onshore on the rising tide and finally merged with the pre‐existing berm. As the tide continued to rise, the new berm translated further onshore as an intertidal bar to the uppermost part of the foreshore. The sediment transport during the berm transition was onshore directed in the upper swash and offshore directed in the lower swash. This berm development can be described through both the neap‐berm, ridge‐and‐runnel and berm‐ridge development concepts proposed by Hine (Sedimentology 1979; 26: 333–351), and all three stages were observed during only three tidal cycles. The main factors controlling this fast transformation were the gentle slope of the cross‐shore profile, rapid water level translation rates, substantial swash overtopping of the berm, and low infiltration rates. Despite the onshore migration of intertidal bars and berm formation, no net foreshore accretion took place during the field campaign. This was largely due to the formation of rip channels with strong rip currents cutting through the intertidal bars and the berm, which acted as a sediment drain in the profile. Groundwater resources in some parts of the lower section of Shire River valley, Malawi, are not useable for rural domestic water supply due to high salinity. In this study, a combined assessment of isotopic (87Sr/86Sr, δ18O and δ2H) and major ion composition was conducted in order to identify the hydro-geochemical evolution of the groundwater and thereby the causes of salinity. Three major end-members (representing fresh- and saline groundwater, and evaporated recharge) were identified based on major ion and isotopic composition. The saline groundwater is inferred to result from dissolution of evaporitic salts (halite) and the fresh groundwater shows influence of silicate weathering. Conservative mixing models show that brackish groundwater samples result from a three component mixture comprising the identified end-members. Hence their salinity is interpreted to result from mixing of fresh groundwater with evaporated recharge and saline groundwater. On the other hand, the groundwater with low TDS, found at some distance from areas of high salinity, is influenced by mixing of evaporated recharge and fresh groundwater only. Close to the Shire marshes, where there is shallow groundwater, composition of stable isotopes of water indicates that evaporation may also be an important factor.  相似文献

The collapse of a section of the cliff at Stevns Klint, Denmark in 1986 provided a unique opportunity to collect about 50 kg of Fish Clay representing the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary layer. In this paper, details of the preparation of this sample are presented, together with preliminary analytical results to support the development of this sample as a reference material, particularly for the determination of iridium and the other platinum-group elements in clays and sediments associated with K-T boundary studies and in other environmental samples collected to study the effects of automobile exhaust catalysts.  相似文献

Based on new neutron activation data for group IVB we find that log-element — log-Ni trends are best understood in terms of core formation and fractional crystallization. The limited compositional range found in group IVB seems to reflect the fact that, because of the low concentrations of S, P and C and the high concentration of Ni, kχ values are nearer unity than are those in other magmatic groups. Mean volatile abundances in group IVB are much lower than those found in any group of chondritic meteorites, suggesting that these low abundances were not entirely the result of nebular processes, but that planetary outgassing was also involved.We calculated cooling rates on the basis of a computer simulation of the growth of kamacite crystals; these calculations are particularly straightforward for the high-Ni irons since no local bulk Ni enrichment is involved. We estimate a mean IVB cooling rate of 170–230 K/Ma, the lower values based on 20 K undercooling, the higher on no undercooling. There is no dependence of cooling rate on chemical composition. The mean cooling rate of the low-volatile groups IVB and IVA are both much higher than those typical of iron-meteorite groups. This indicates small parent bodies, and reinforces the above suggestion that the low volatile contents resulted from planetary outgassing.There is a small compositional hiatus in group IVB, but since the sets on both sides of the hiatus form continuous trends on log-element — log-Ni diagrams and have the same cooling rates, it appears that both sets originated in a single oxidized, refractory-rich parent body. This sampling hiatus corresponds to 26% of the original core, a value shown to be typical for a random sequence sampled 11 times.  相似文献

The natural attenuation of a binary mixture of toluene and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, which was previously experimentally demonstrated in anaerobic column experiments, was simulated with the newly-developed PHREEQC model to reveal the biogeochemical processes involved. The processes considered in this model include advection, diffusion, sorption, redox reactions (e.g., oxidation of toluene and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene coupled to the reduction of microbial ferric iron), precipitation of secondary minerals such as siderite and magnetite, and dissolution of hydrous ferric oxides, as well as other thermodynamic equilibrium reactions. The functions of advection and diffusion built into the PHREEQC were conventionally simulated. The sorption was kinetically simulated based on a bicontinuum model, whereas biodegradation was described using a multiple-term Monod model. The processes mentioned above were coupled with a geochemical equilibrium model. The consistency between the experimental and modeling results indicates that the processes defined and the controlling parameters chosen could describe the coupled interactions between transport and biogeochemical reactions for the studied system. The discrepancy between modeling and experimental observations, however, also revealed the limitation of the modeling approach. In general, the model approach, which incorporates simplified mathematical representations of the true physico-chemical dynamics of the sorption and biodegradation processes of toluene and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene under anaerobic conditions is a very efficient and good predictive tool in management and remediation of contaminant groundwater aquifers.  相似文献
