Pliocene volcanics on the island of Bequia comprise two interbeddedsuites of basalts and andesites. The isotopically homogeneoussuite (IHS) has a limited range of SrNdPb isotopes(87Sr/86Sr 0.70400.7046, 143 Nd/144 Nd 0.5130 and 206Pb/204Pb 19.3619.51), and mantle-like 18O values (5.5in clinopyroxene). The isotopically diverse suite (IDS) is characterizedby much wider ranges of radiogenic isotopes (87 Sr/86Sr 0.70480.7077,143 Nd/144 Nd 0.51280.5123 and 206 Pb/204 Pb 19.720.2),in which all of the Sr and Pb ratios are higher and Nd ratiosare lower than those of the IHS. The IDS is also characterizedby high 18 O values, up to 7.6 in clinopyroxene. The Sr andPb isotope ratios are too high, and the Nd isotope ratios aretoo low in the IDS for any of these lavas to be derived fromunmodified depleted mantle. Both suites are petrologically very similar and their majorelement compositions and phenocryst contents suggest that theywere formed largely by fractional crystallization of a hydroustholeiitic melt at pressures <3 kbar. The isotopic ratiosand enrichments in large ion lithophile elements (LILE), andto some extent light rare earth elements (LREE), as comparedwith mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), of the IHS lavas suggestthat they were derived from a depleted mantle source which hadbeen re-enriched by the addition of 14% of a subductioncomponent. This component probably comprised a mixture of dehydrationfluids, and perhaps minor siliceous melts, released from subductingsediments and mafic crust. The extreme isotopic ranges, largeenrichments in incompatible elements, more fractionated LREEpatterns and higher 18 O values of the IDS lavas are interpretedas resulting from 1055% assimilationfractionalcrystallization of sediments, derived from the Guyana Shield,which are present in the arc crust, by IHS type melts. This paper examines the transport of calcareous sand in unidirectional flow and its prediction through existing sediment transport models. A flume experiment of four sand samples collected on Oahu, Hawaii, provides 29 sets of sediment transport data in the bed-form and suspended transport stages. The measured transport data are compared with direct predictions from four energy-based transport models developed for siliceous particles. Corrections for the grain-size, fall velocity, and critical velocity of calcareous sand based on recent research are applied to the models and the results are compared with the direct calculations and measured data. The comparison illustrates the important role particle shape plays in the transport of calcareous sand. All four sediment transport models give consistent predictions and good agreement with the majority of the measured data. Two of the models respond positively to the corrections in both the bed-form and suspended transport stages indicating that such an approach may provide an interim solution for the transport of calcareous sand. 相似文献

The Torfaj?kull volcano, Iceland's largest silicic centre, issituated close to the junction of the active, southerly propagatingEastern Rift Zone and the South Eastern Zone, an older crustalsegment. This paper provides major, trace, and some Sr isotopedata on postglacial (<10000 y) rocks, i.e., tholeiitic magmasof the Eastern Rift Zone and transitional basalts, icelandites,and rhyolites of the Torfaj?kull centre, and assesses the relationshipsbetween the magma types in terms of the development of the Icelandiccrust. Tholeiitic magmas from the Eastern Rift Zone are LILE-enrichedrelative to MORB. They have undergone extensive olivine-plagioclase-clinopyroxenefractionation at low pressures. Compared with the tholeiites,Torfaj?kull transitional basalts show LILE/HFS enrichment andhigher (87Sr/86Sr)1 ratios. They define several magmatic lineagesand have equilibrated over a wide range of pressures. Both basalttypes were derived by very small degrees of partial meltingof compositionally similar mantle sources, the main differencebeing that the tholeiites were generated in the spinel Iherzolite,and the transitional basalts in the garnet lherzolite, stabilityfields, a conclusion previously reached by Meyer et al. (1985).The mantle sources may have contained LILE-enriched streaks. Low-pressure differentiation of Torfaj?kull transitional basaltproduced an iceiandite to sub-alkaline rhyolite sequence bycrystal fractionation, the rhyolites representing >90% crystallizationof parental basalts. The rhyolites were emplaced as nine separatelava fields, formed during 11 eruptive episodes. The compositionalrange within each field is limited, and, although similar, theranges define several magmatic lineages. Continued fractionationof plagioclase-alkali feldspar-clinopyroxene-magnetite-apatite-zirconassemblages generated peralkaline rhyolites in certain post-glacialeruptions. Chemical variations in the deposits from the Hrafntinnuskerperalkaline eruption were related predominantly to alkali feldsparfractionation, and the melts were erupted from a zoned magmachamber. Eighteen laboratories participated in the interlaboratory program for total iron, titanium, aluminium, calcium, barium, uranium, thorium, total sulphur, sulphate and arsenic. To investigate the effect of permeability on the propagation of seismo-acoustic waves through marine sediments, a theoretical model based on Biot's equations is established which relates the compressional wave velocity measured at a fixed frequency to computed velocities at zero and infinite frequencies in terms of sediment porosity and permeability. The model is examined experimentally in a standard soil mechanics consolidation test (itself dependent, among other things, on sediment porosity and permeability) which has been modified to include measurements of compressional wave velocity at 1 MHz and shear-wave velocity at 5 kHz. This test allows the elastic modulus of the sediment frame to be assessed under different load conditions simultaneous with the velocity determinations. From a number of tests on different samples, five samples are chosen to typify the range of sediment sizes. The results show that the difference between the measured velocity at 1 MHz and the model-derived velocity at zero frequency increases with increasing particle size (from clays to fine sand), with decreasing porosity, and with increasing permeability. For sediments coarser than fine sand the simple model breaks down, possibly because of the dominance of scattering/diffraction effects at the high frequency of the experiment. Within this limitation the model seems satisfactory to offer a capability of predicting the permeability of a sea floor sediment to an order of magnitude by the in situ measurement of seismic velocities over a wide range of frequencies; the prediction process requires a good in situ determination of sediment porosity such as that offered by electrical formation factor measurements. 相似文献

A plasma gun source has been successfully used to obtain sub-bottom profiles. The profiles show better penetration than with a 3-5 kHz source and more resolution than with an air gun. The plasma gun source is compact, self-contained, and requires no complex auxiliary equipment. The device was deployed from large research vessels and a small boat. The plasma gun produces sufficient acoustic energy and with its characteristically short pulse length and broad bandwidth it is an attractive sub-bottom profiler, especially in shallow fresh or salt water. 相似文献

An Ordovician geanticlinal marine sequence is exposed in theCentral West of New South Wales, Australia. The sequence containingbasic lavas, labile sedimentary, and proclastic rocks, has undergoneextensive adjustment during regional burial metamorphism. Thebasic lavas have a patchy coloration due to the formation ofalternation minerals of the prehnite-pumpellyite facies whichapperar to have formed during the metamorphism. The hererogeneousappearance of the basic lavas reflects a pronouced chemicaland mineralogical departure from the original composition. Twodiverging trends result. One leads to the production of a Ca-enrichedlithology, the other, which by far dominates in area at eachouterop, leads to a spilitic lithology. A succession of metamorphic zones can be recognized along theMolong Geanticline, an ancient rise within the Tasman Geosynclineof Eastern Australia. In order of increasing grade, the zonesin the volcanogenic rocks are: (1) an albite-quartz zone, containingneither prehnite, pumpellyite, actinolite, nor biotite; (2)a prehnite zone; (3) a prehnite-pumpellyite zone; (4) an actinolitezone; and (5) a biotite zone. Zeolite associations are not developed.Zones 4 and 5 lie within the greenschist facies. The rocks alongthis geanticline are generally only slightly deformed, lackingcleavage. The grade of this metamorphism within the Molong Geanticlineincreases partly in accordance with increasing stratigraphicdepth and partly increases eastwards towards the adjacent HillEnd Trough. Within the Trough, rocks show metamorphic assemblagesakin to those of Zones 4 and 5 as defined within the MolongGeanticline, but deformation is more extreme and a regionalcleavage is characteristic. In the region about the Hill EndTrough and the adjacent geanticlines there is an apparent variationfrom essentially static burial metamorphism of the geanticlinesthrough transitional types to tectonic dynamothermal metamorphismof the trough. Both metamorphisms are envisaged as having arisenduring the same general period of metamorphism, but deformationof the geanticlines was much less than deformation in the interveningHill End Trough. 相似文献
