The paper analyses results of the numerical simulation of upwelling events in the north-western part of the Black Sea, mostly
near the South Crimea. The calculations were performed using a numerical model based on primitive hydrodynamics equations.
Emphasis is laid on the case when a salinity front simulating the Black Sea rim current is prescribed in the initial conditions.
The interaction of the Black Sea rim current's stream with the coastline and bottom topography leads to the development of
an upwelling near the Crimea's coast, even in the absence of wind forcing. The paper discusses the structure of the three-dimensional
circulation of waters in the shelf area of the NW Black Sea. Numerical modelling results are matched up with the satellite
data obtained by the HRPT receiving station.

In the frame of the linear theory for long waves, the paper studies long waves generated by a barotropic tide running at an
arbitrary angle over a bottom ridge. The ocean is assumed to be two-layered. In the area of a ridge with a rectangular cross
section, geostrophic flows are considered, coupled with the inclinations of the free surface and interface. Wave amplitudes
are shown to depend on the angle of an onrunning tide and this allows us to reach a conclusion about the influence of a geostrophic
current on the generation of internal waves.

A new algorithm for calculating the vertical velocity is suggested. Horizontal current velocity components are expressed through
level inclination and wind/temperature forcing. The acquired relations are given in the difference form, with the accuracy
being sufficiently high. The algorithm is tested using cases where a numerical solution is matched up with an exact one. The
derived data are subsequently analysed.

The paper considers the application of self-organizing models, specifically, the method of grouped arguments consideration
(MGAC), to forecast short and non-stationary time series of observations in the ocean. A sequence of operations for the treatment
of observational series is suggested. To assess its efficiency, we have used mean monthly oxygen concentration data collected
in the surface and near-bottom layers of the Taganrog Bay. It is shown that the application of the MGAC model allows one to
reduce by two times the root-mean-square error of that of the series prediction by five points, in comparison with the Jenkins-Box
regressional model. It has been concluded that the predictors' non-linear functions may be effectively used in the treatment
of short samplings.

Generalization of the approximation for the autocovariance function of estimate error, used frequently in four-dimensional analysis of the ocean's hydrophysical fields, is suggested for cross-covariance functions. It is shown that the principal properties of the covariance function of error estimate are not then violated. Average and extreme values of the current velocity, seawater temperature, and their standard deviations are considered on the basis of measurements carried out at three moorings deployed in the Florida Strait. The contributions of the low-frequency (synoptic) and mesoscale variations of currents and the seawater temperature to their temporal variability are estimated. The kinetic energy values of the averaged current and the synoptic and mesoscale variations are given. Their contributions to the general (total) kinetic energy of currents are determined. Data collected from 20 years of observations by the P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (about 250 comprehensive ecosystem stations) are summarized to evaluate the primary production and biomass of the principal groups of plankton in the Pacific Ocean. The stations were classified into geographical regions according to satellite determined criteria. The areas of these regions were evaluated according to CZCS data from 1978 to 1986. The total value of primary production was evaluated as 26·9 Gt C year−1. Taking the “bottle effect” correction into account, this value may be as high as 45.6 Gt C year−1. Total biomass values of phytoplankton (134 Mt C), bacteria (86 Mt C), protozoa (26 Mt C) and mesoplankton (184 Mt C) were also calculated. The response of the total ozone (TO) at subarctic latitudes to volcanic eruptions, products of which were injected into the
stratosphere, is analyzed. It is established that the behavior of the series of average annual TO values according to the
TOMS, SCIAMACHY, and GOME space equipment data averaged for 55°–65° N latitudes agrees with the activity of explosive volcanic
eruptions. The series of the TO satellite monitoring instrumental data are extended by 200 years into the past using a reconstruction
from the dendro-chronologic data. An analysis of the series of TO reconstructed values indicates that volcanogenic perturbations
of the subarctic ozonosphere initiate long-term negative TO deviations. In this case, the TO negative deviation depth depends
on the frequency of the ozonosphere volcanogenic perturbations and the phase of quasiperiodic oscillation cycles rather than
on the strength of a single volcanic explosion. 相似文献
