Sumaco Volcano is located in the rear-arc of Ecuador and produces phonolitic alkaline lavas hosting a unique assemblage of minerals including haüyne and titanaugite. The most mafic lavas are picrobasalts that contain titanaugite as the primary mineral phase; the most evolved tephri-phonolite lavas contain titanaugite?+?anorthoclase?+?haüyne. Titanaugite forms at middle to deep crustal pressures, whereas haüyne is only stable at shallow depths in highly oxidizing conditions. The Sumaco mineral assemblages and geochemistry indicate that fractionation of the titanaugite- and haüyne-bearing assemblage took place over a range of pressures from 5 to 25 kbar (14–75 km), with at least 50% of differentiation taking place at shallow crustal levels. Minerals record multiple cycles of recharge and mixing accompanied by an increase in fO2 and sulfur concentration during differentiation. Mantle-like Sr and Nd isotope values (87Sr/86Sr = 0.70406–0.70423; 143Nd/144Nd = 0.512880–0.512913) indicate minimal crustal assimilation. Sumaco’s unique geochemical composition is not observed in the nearby volcanoes Antisana, Pan de Azucar or El Reventador suggesting that its unique magma source is confined to this volcano. The high temperature and sulfate-saturated conditions at shallow depths suggest that magma ascends rapidly to a shallow reservoir where the majority of crystallization and recharge takes place prior to eruption. An important conclusion of this research is that Sumaco does not represent typical rear-arc subduction processes, and caution should be used when using Sumaco as an end-member to evaluate across-arc processes in the Northern Volcanic Zone.  相似文献

The Plain of Jars in north-eastern Laos is home to over 2000 stone jars varying in size from 100 kg to over 30 tonnes. The jars were probably made between 1500 and 2500 years ago; however, who by is not known, as the indigenous people have only lived in the area for 1000 years. Local legend speaks of these jars being used to store Lao-Lao or rice whisky; research indicates that these jars were part of loca funerary rites. There are currently 60 known jar sites, where anywhere between one and 350 individual jars are recorded. The jars are constructed from a variety of lithologies although a few basic rules to selecting suitable rocks have been observed. This study outlines which rock types have been used and how the characteristics of the rock mass controlled the jar makers' selection.  相似文献

In this paper, we examine the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for studying soil erosion. Surrogate soil particles were created by coating RFID tags with silicone clay and bronze powder to give them an overall density similar to that of quartz particles. The particles were between 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm in diameter and had specific weights of 2.5 to 3.0. These tagged particles were deployed on two plots: first, in a proof‐of‐concept laboratory study and secondly in a field study, the latter involving repeated surveys after rainfall events. Seven surveys under natural rainfall over four months yielded recovery rates averaged 56%. RFIDs are shown to provide useful insights into the movement of individual soil particles during erosion processes. As RFID technology advances, further miniaturization is likely to occur enabling the movement of a greater range of soil particles to be studied, and we may anticipate improvements to the signal detection so that recovery does not rely wholly on visual identification. This review considers the geological and geomorphological context of tufa barrages that occupy buried valley settings in the Wye catchment, Derbyshire. It describes the potential relationship of the tufa with locations of hypothesised river captures and inception horizon-guided groundwater flow paths. Tufa barrage development is associated with steps in the bedrock, which may be related to knick-point recession during river capture. Broad estimates of valley incision have been calculated from previously dated deposits. These support current interpretations of particularly significant effective base-level lowering during the Anglian and Devensian stages of the Quaternary and have the potential to add to the knowledge of regional uplift histories.  相似文献

In recent years, through the availability of remotely sensed data and other national datasets, it has become possible to conduct national-scale flood risk assessment in England and Wales. The results of this type of risk analysis can be used to inform policy-making and prioritisation of resources for flood management. It can form the starting point for more detailed strategic and local-scale flood risk assessments. The national-scale risk assessment methodology outlined in this paper makes use of information on the location, standard of protection and condition of flood defences in England and Wales, together with datasets of floodplain extent, topography, occupancy and asset values. The flood risk assessment was applied to all of England and Wales in 2002 at which point the expected annual damage from flooding was estimated to be approximately £1 billion. This figure is comparable with records of recent flood damage. The methodology has subsequently been applied to examine the effects of climate and socio-economic change 50 and 80 years in the future. The analysis predicts increasing flood risk unless current flood management policies, practices and investment levels are changed – up to 20-fold increase in real terms economic risk by the 2080s in the scenario with highest economic growth. The increase is attributable primarily to a combination of climate change (in particular sea level rise and increasing precipitation in parts of the UK) and increasing economic vulnerability.  相似文献

Summary A suite of spilitic rocks from S.W. England has been analysed for 27 major and trace elements. Factor analysis was used to resolve the effects of primary magmatic variation and secondary spilitic alteration in determining the distribution of each element. The variation of REE, Nb, Zr, Fe, Ti, Sc and V is mainly attributed to igneous fractionation, whereas the variation of the other elements mainly reflects the results of spilitization. Spilitization is considered to be due to reaction between basalts and seawater soon after their original eruption, rather than the result of later regional metamorphism.

Zusammenfassung Spilitische Gesteine aus Südwest-England wurden auf 27 Haupt— und Spurenelemente untersucht.Faktorenanalysen wurden benützt, um zu unterscheiden, inwieweit die Variation einzelner Elemente durch primäre magmatische bzw. sekundäre Spilitisierungsprozesse bedingt ist. Die Verteilung der SEE, Nb, Zr, Fe, Ti, Sc und V wird hautsächlich von der magmatischen Fraktionierung, die der anderen Elemente von der spilitischen Alteration kontrolliert.Die Spilitisierung wird eher auf eine Reaktion der frisch eruptierten Basalte mit dem Meerwasser, als auf spätere regional-metamorphe Prozesse zurückgeführt.
