High-resolution topographic models have revolutionized monitoring of river changes by comparing sequential river topographic surveys (i.e. change detection). Nevertheless, much more may be obtained from this innovative quantification of changes. In this paper, we enhance the interpretation of geomorphic processes by presenting a new method for understanding of sources and sinks of sediment, river sediment transfers and functional sediment connectivity. Repeat digital elevation models (DEMs) obtained by photogrammetry were used to quantify topographic change after two floods by creating a DEM of difference (DoD) of a 6.5 km-long reach of Rambla de la Viuda stream, an ephemeral gravel-bed river in eastern Spain. The proposed method involved dividing the channel into 10 m-long longitudinal strips that were used to systematically draw boundaries between the erosional and depositional areas of the DoD. The analysis objectively: (i) drew a series of erosional and depositional segments, from 120 to 1360 m in length; (ii) estimated ranges of source-to-storage sediment transport distances, 320–670 m in the upstream and middle reaches and up to 2030 m in the lower reach; and (iii) obtained values of functional connectivity (i.e. the ratio between the sediment exported (erosion) and retained (deposition), ranging from 103 to 10−3). The variability in these three parameters along the river was found to be related to the level of channel disturbance by in-stream mining during the 1990s and 2000s. Additionally, this method indicates that the main process responsible for self-adjustment of the present morphosedimentary conditions is intra-reach erosion of banks and channel beds. Thus, this study proposes a new methodology to characterize morphological change, sediment transfer and connectivity that may serve as environmental indicators of the hydromorphological integrity of rivers with potential application to the European Water Framework Directive. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

We study the relationships between the seafloor structures and the axial magma chamber geometry in the 9°N overlapping spreading center (OSC) area on the fast spreading East Pacific Rise (EPR). Our observations are based on a new high resolution bathymetric map of the 9°N OSC area derived from picks of the seafloor arrival on 3D seismic data, and on previously published data that constrain the presence and distribution of melt below the 9°N OSC. Differences in the orientation of structures between the seafloor and the magma chamber indicate a sharp change in principal stress directions with depth, suggesting that the brittle crust above the melt sill is decoupled from the melt sill itself and the ductile crust underlying it. The stress-field within the brittle upper crust results from a local interaction of the two overlapping spreading centers, whereas the stress-field in the crust below the melt sill corresponds to the regional stress-field imposed by plate separation. Given this mechanical structure of the crust, the melt sill shape and location appear to be controlled by the following factors: the location of the deep melt source below the melt sill, the ambient stress-field at the depth of the melt sill, and the stress-field in the brittle upper crust above the melt sill, which thermally shapes the roof of the melt sill through repeated eruptions. 相似文献

Changes expected in Mexico City's seismic response due to land subsidence caused by groundwater extraction are examined. Settlements of the land surface observed in the recent past are compiled and processed to predict regional subsidence in the near future. This information is used in combination with the iso-depth and iso-period maps stipulated by the building code to estimate the compaction of surface sediments and the shortening of soil periods. The time-progressive evolution of the official seismic zoning maps and the associated site-specific response spectra is predicted. The same is done with spectral response contours expressed in terms of the site and structure periods. The subsidence effects are considered through an impact factor, which represents the increase or decrease in the spectral ordinates with respect to the current values specified for design purposes. The detrimental or beneficial effects depend on the relative values of the structure and site periods. 相似文献

Natural hydrothermal ZnCO3 crystal aggregates are nominally anhydrous phases with interfacial water, with substitutional divalent cations and decarbonation c. 300°C. All these common features must be involved during the experimental heating of a thermoluminescence (TL) glow curve up to 500°C: dehydration–dehydroxylation, phase transition and ion transition of point defects in Zn2+ positions. A representative specimen of natural smithsonite was analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) with a chemical probe of energy dispersive spectrometer, high temperature in situ X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analyses coupled to thermogravimetry, TL, radioluminescence and high resolution spectra thermoluminescence (3DTL), to gain an overview of the spectra emission and defects linkages modified by heating from room temperature up to 500°C. The ZnCO3 specimen contains minor amounts of Ca, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, Ce, Co, Ni, Mn and Fe. Under FESEM, it displays CaCO3 clusters and oscillatory zoning distribution with lamellae ranging from Ca0.11Zn0.89 to Ca0.19Zn0.81. The analytical results suggest assignments of defects and processes to measured 3DTL emission bands, as follows: (1) peak at ~260°C, ~360 nm bonds, breaking during the thermal decarbonation process; (2) peak ~120°C, ~340 nm: non-bridging oxygen centres associated to a complex dehydration–dehydroxylation process and (3) peak at ~170°C, ~650 nm, crystal field effects on the thermoluminescence of Mn2+ centres and associated transitional elements in the ZnCO3 phase. M 1–92 is a very well studied bipolar pPN that can be considered an archetype of this type of sources; it shows a clear axial
symmetry, along with the kinematics characteristic of this class of envelopes around post-AGB stars. We performed sub-arcsecond
resolution observations of the J=2–1 rotational line of 13CO in M 1–92 with the new extended configurations of the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer, for studying the morphology
and velocity field of the molecular gas better in the nebula, particularly in its central parts. We found that the equatorial
structure dividing the two lobes is a thin flat disk, which expands radially with a velocity proportional to the distance
to the central stellar system. The kinetic age of this equatorial flow is very similar to that measured in the two lobes,
suggesting that the whole structure was formed as a result of a single event some 1200 yr ago, after which the nebula reached
an expansion velocity field with axial symmetry. The small widths and velocity dispersion in the gas forming the lobe walls
confirm that the acceleration responsible for the nebular shape could not last more than 100–120 yr. In view of the similarity
to η Car, we speculate on the possibility that the whole nebula was formed as a result of a magneto-rotational explosion in a
common-envelope system. The study of the possible importance of this mechanism in the context of global PNe and pPNe reshaping
should be one on the fields in which future ALMA observations will make a crucial contribution.

The physical background to a suite of biological studies carried out in the Canary Islands upwelling region is presented. The area is unique in that the coastal transition zone is spanned by an archipelago of islands that shed mesoscale eddies of diameter 50–100 km into the alongshore flow. A recurrent filament and eddy system was sampled intensively to study the changing properties of waters as they are advected towards the open ocean in the filament and to investigate the exchanges between filament and eddies. The system was more complex than previously revealed. In early August, a single filament extended offshore from near Cape Juby. Two weeks later, a second filament had developed slightly farther north and extended offshore to merge with the first at 100 km offshore. The merged filament was entrained around a recurrent, topographically trapped cyclonic eddy and interacted with transient cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies shed from the island of Gran Canaria. Between the two filaments and the coast, a pair of counter-rotating eddies re-circulated water parcels for several weeks. Surface layer drifters cycled around this near-shore re-circulation several times before following convoluted paths that demonstrate significant exchange between continental shelf and open ocean waters. 相似文献

The present-day thermal state of the martian interior is a very important issue for understanding the internal evolution of the planet. Here, in order to obtain an improved upper limit for the heat flow at the north polar region, we use the lower limit of the effective elastic thickness of the lithosphere loaded by the north polar cap, crustal heat-producing elements (HPE) abundances based on martian geochemistry, and a temperature-dependent thermal conductivity for the upper mantle. We also perform similar calculations for the south polar region, although uncertainties in lithospheric flexure make the results less robust. Our results show that the present-day surface and sublithospheric heat flows cannot be higher than 19 and 12 mW m−2, respectively, in the north polar region, and similar values might be representative of the south polar region (although with a somewhat higher surface heat flow due to the radioactive contribution from a thicker crust). These values, if representative of martian averages, do not necessarily imply sub-chondritic HPE bulk abundances for Mars (as previously suggested), since (1) chondritic composition models produce a present-day total heat power equivalent to an average surface heat flow of 14-22 mW m−2 and (2) some convective models obtain similar heat flows for the present time. Regions of low heat flow may even have existed during the last billions of years, in accordance with several surface heat flow estimates of ∼20 mW m−2 or less for terrains loaded during Hesperian or Amazonian times. On the other hand, there are some evidences suggesting the current existence of regions of enhanced heat flow, and therefore average heat flows could be higher than those obtained for the north (and maybe the south) polar region. 相似文献

We present observations of eight Galactic bulge microlensing events taken with the 1.0-m Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope (JKT) on La Palma during 2000 June and July. The JKT observing schedule was optimized using a prioritizing algorithm to automatically update the target list. For most of these events we have sampled the light curves at times where no information was available from the OGLE alert team. We assume a point-source point-lens (PSPL) model and perform a maximum likelihood fit to both our data and the OGLE data to constrain the event parameters of the fit. We then refit the data assuming a binary lens and proceed to calculate the probability of detecting planets with mass ratio q = 10−3 . We have seen no clear signatures of planetary deviations on any of the eight events and we quantify constraints on the presence of planetary companions to the lensing stars. For two well-observed events, 2000BUL31 and 2000BUL33, our detection probabilities peak at ∼30 and ∼20 per cent respectively for q = 10−3 and a ∼ R E for a Δχ2 threshold value of 60. 相似文献

Mg-bearing calcite was precipitated at 25°C in closed system free-drift experiments from solutions containing NaHCO3, CaCl2 and MgCl2. The chemical and isotope composition of the solution and precipitate were investigated during time course experiments of 24-h duration. Monohydrocalcite and calcite precipitated early in the experiments (<8 h), while Mg-calcite was the predominant precipitate (>95%) thereafter. Solid collected at the end of the experiments displayed compositional zoning from pure calcite in crystal cores to up to 23 mol% MgCO3 in the rims. Smaller excursions in Mg were superimposed on this chemical record, which is characteristic of oscillatory zoning observed in synthetic and natural solid-solution carbonates of differing solubility. Magnesium also altered the predominant morphology of crystals over time from the {104} to {100} and {110} growth forms.The oxygen isotope fractionation factor for the magnesian-calcite-water system (as 103lnαMg-cl-H2O) displayed a strong dependence on the mol% MgCO3 in the solid phase, but quantification of the relationship was difficult due to the heterogeneous nature of the precipitate. Considering only the Mg-content and δ18O values for the bulk solid, 103lnαMg-cl-H2O increased at a rate of 0.17 ± 0.02 per mol% MgCO3; this value is a factor of three higher than the single previous estimate (Tarutani T., Clayton R.N., and Mayeda T. K. (1969) The effect of polymorphims and magnesium substitution on oxygen isotope fractionation between calcium carbonate and water. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 33, 987-996). Nevertheless, extrapolation of our relationship to the pure calcite end member yielded a value of 27.9 ± 0.02, which is similar in magnitude to published values for the calcite-water system. Although no kinetic effect was observed on 103lnαMg-cl-H2O for precipitation rates that ranged from 103.21 to 104.60 μmol · m−2 · h−1, it was impossible to disentangle the potential effect(s) of precipitation rate and Mg-content on 103lnαMg-cl-H2O due to the heterogeneous nature of the solid.The results of this study suggest that paleotemperatures inferred from the δ18O values of high magnesian calcite (>10 mol% MgCO3) may be significantly underestimated. Also, the results underscore the need for additional experiments to accurately characterize the effect of Mg coprecipitation on the isotope systematics of calcite from a chemically homogeneous precipitate or a heterogeneous material that is analyzed at the scale of chemical and isotopic zonation. 相似文献
