德勒姆英国地理学会年会

英国地理学家学会年会于1984年1月4日至7日在德勒姆大学召开。会址设在德勒姆大学的科学中心。这个中心包括该大学的地理系。学会的各个研究小组共计召开有33次会议,向这些会上提交的论文有170篇。

美国地貌学情况综述

我们根据地貌工作者和第四纪地质学工作的人数、专业团体会员人数及其有关出版物等情况对美国地貌学家的活动状况做一个综述。美国的地貌学出现于19世纪末期。当时的地质学和地理学还紧密联系在一起的。当地理学成为一个独立学科时,其成员主要是自然地理学家和学过地质学的地貌学工作者。在本世纪30年代期间,地理学家们反对环境决定论的模式,地貌学的重要性有所下降。     

1985年空间海洋学的状况和展望

China's population: an alternative perspective

The author presents a selection of cartograms designed to illustrate aspects of the demography of China. Topics covered include population growth, density, regional variations in fertility, and age distribution. A discussion of the advantages of using cartograms (maps drawn proportional to a given variable) as opposed to conventional, area-based maps, is included.     

Far beyond the Gulf: the implications of warfare for Asian labour migration

The implications of the Gulf War are assessed for the countries in Asia that send labor migrants to the Middle East. "This paper seeks to examine the effects of...the loss of remittances (and related issues, including return migration), primarily in terms of the long-term implications of the War for the future of contract labour migration in the Asian region...."     

Demographic trends in the Austro-German Alps

Population trends in the German and Austrian Alps between 1971 and 1981 are described. The effects of commune size, tourism, and altitude on population dynamics are considered.     

The political economy of urbanization in Melanesia

The authors attempt to provide a comprehensive review of urbanization in three Melanesian countries (Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu) and in Fiji. The focus of the paper is on the development and perpetuation of various forms of inequality exemplified by Melanesian urbanization and its colonial origins.
