The Portuguese coast has been affected several times in the past by strong earthquakes that generated tsunamis severely damaging the city of Lisbon.
The most significant event known was the Lisbon earthquake of 1 November 1755. It is generally assumed that the location of this event was the Gorringe Bank region in the North Atlantic. This ridge, located 200 km south-west of the Portuguese shore, was also the location of the 28 February 1969 magnitude Ms = 7.9 earthquake (Fukao, 1973), that generated a tsunami of small amplitude clearly recorded at the tidal stations of the Portuguese south and south-west coasts.
The need to reduce the social and economic impact of an event of this type, greatly amplified by the urban concentration of coastal areas, led to the research project 'Destructive Earthquakes and Tsunami Warning System in SW Portugal'. This project, sponsored by the European Economic Community and the public Portuguese research funding agencies, has been conducted by the Geophysical Centre of the University of Lisbon, since April 1988.
The main targets of the project are:•the installation of a pilot warning system against tsunamis, based on two ocean bottom stations, comprising a 3 component seismometer and a bottom mounted pressure sensor, linked by cable to a surface buoy. This buoy is equipped with a data acquisition and data transmission system. Seismic and water level data will be collected on an almost real-time basis and will be transmitted to Lisbon via satellite;
•the refinement of existing geological models, in order to clarify the genesis of the bank and the seismic activity in this area;
•the installation of an adequate network of seismic monitoring stations in order to better locate off shore earthquakes (Fig. 1);
•the evaluation of seismic and tsunami risk around the Iberian Peninsula. 相似文献

Climate changes affect marine ecosystems and the survival, growth, reproduction and distribution of species, including those targeted by commercial fisheries. The impact of climate change has been reported for many fish species, but studies focusing on the effects of climate on bivalve resources are lacking. In Portugal, the harvesting of bivalves is an old and artisanal activity, of special importance along the Algarve coast (South of Portugal). This study aims to evaluate the influence of climatic, environmental and fisheries factors on the landings of intertidal coastal lagoon and coastal bivalve species (subtidal nearshore species). The environmental and fisheries parameters considered to affect the landings of bivalves in the eastern Algarve were: fishing effort (number of fishing events), sea surface temperature, North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index, upwelling index, wind magnitude and direction and river discharges. Analysis of time series data using min/max autocorrelation factor analysis and dynamic factor analysis showed that, for most species, fishing effort was positively related with landings per unit effort trends in the following year. Lagoon bivalve species (Cerastoderma edule and Ruditapes decussatus) responded to different environmental variables than the coastal bivalve species (Chamelea gallina, Pharus legumen, Donax spp. and Spisula solida). Upwelling index had a significant effect on the lagoon bivalves while the NAO index, wind magnitude and direction, and river discharges only affected the coastal species. This study highlighted the need to adapt fishing effort regimes, while considering the background effects of environmental variability, in order to improve fisheries management. 相似文献

The Columbia River estuary is characterized by relatively large tidal currents and water residence times of a few days or less. These and other environmental conditions tend to suppress water column productivity and favor the export of riverborne nutrients to the coastal ocean. However, hotspots of biological activity may allow for significant nutrient transformation and removal within the estuary, but these processes have previously been difficult to quantify due to the challenges of obtaining measurements at appropriate frequency and duration. In this study, nutrient biogeochemical dynamics within the salt-influenced region of the estuary were quantified using high-resolution in situ observations of nutrients and physical water properties. During 2010, three autonomous nutrient sensors (Satlantic SUNA, SubChem Systems Inc. APNA, WET Labs Cycle-PO4) that together measured nitrate?+?nitrite, orthophosphate, ammonium, silicic acid, and nitrite were deployed on fixed observatory platforms. Hourly measurements captured tidal fluctuations and permitted an analysis of river and ocean end-member mixing. The results suggested that during summer, the lower estuary released high concentrations of ammonium and phosphate despite low concentrations in the river and coastal ocean. This was likely a result of organic matter accumulation and remineralization in the estuarine turbidity maximum and the lateral bays adjacent to the main channel. 相似文献

This study aims to analyze the spatial distributions of several metals in sediments from five sites in Ribeira Bay, Brazil. Ribeira Bay is a very important area to the local community, due to its artisan fishery, and it also has a biological relevance for many marine species that use mangroves as nursery and feeding sites. According to the results, the area was not considered a metal polluted area. Despite not having a significant source of metals inside the Bay nowadays, Ilha Grande Bay harbors a shipyard, an oil terminal, and a commercial port, as well as two thermonuclear power plants (Angra I e II), all of which indirectly influence the study area. 相似文献

The 1975 May 26 earthquake, of magnitude Ms = 7.9, occurred in the North Atlantic close to the Azores Archipelago. Its epicentre,
as given by US Geological Survey, was 17.5° W, 35.9° N, 200 km south of the Gloria Fault. Several authors determined the focal
mechanism as a dextral strike-slip event with no significant dip-slip component, compatible with the relative motion between
Eurasia and Nubia plates but away from the presumed plate boundary. The 1975 earthquake generated a tsunami of small amplitude,
recorded at the Portuguese tide-gauge network, in Spain and Northern Africa. The peculiar location of the earthquake and tsunami
source and the generation of a noticeable tsunami were already discussed by several authors, but up to now, no direct modelling
of the tsunami generation and propagation was made to judge the set of source solutions obtained by seismological analysis.
In this paper, we present tsunami simulations, backward ray tracing and forward non-linear shallow water simulations using
data from Iberia and Azores and Northern Africa. We show that a good fit between observed data and synthetic waveforms can
be obtained with a focal mechanism with no significant dip-slip component, favouring its interpretation as almost pure dextral
strike-slip event located in an old fracture zone south of Gloria Fault. 相似文献

We report on high-speed eclipse photometry of the dwarf nova V2051 Oph while it was in a low brightness state, at B ≃ 16.2 mag. In comparison with the average IUE spectra, the ultraviolet continuum and emission lines appear reduced by factors of, respectively, ≃ 4 and ≃ 5. Flickering activity is mostly suppressed and the light curve shows the eclipse of a compact white dwarf at the disc centre which contributes ≃ 60 per cent of the total light at 3900–4300 Å. We use measurements of contact phases in the eclipse light curve to derive the binary geometry and to estimate masses and relevant dimensions. We find a mass ratio of q = 0.19 ± 0.03 and an inclination of i = 83 ± 2°. The masses of the component stars are M 1 = 0.78 ± 0.06 M⊙ and M 2 = 0.15 ± 0.03 M⊙. Our photometric model predicts K 1 = 83 ± 12 km s−1 and K 2 = 436 ± 11 km s−1 . The predicted value of K1 is in accordance with the velocity amplitude obtained from the emission lines after a correction for asymmetric line emission in the disc is made. The secondary of V2051 Oph is significantly more massive than the secondaries of the other ultrashort period dwarf novae. V2051 Oph is probably a relatively young system, with a secondary star that has not had enough time to evolve out of thermal equilibrium. 相似文献
