Bau und Entwicklung des Harznordrandes bei Bad Harzburg

Zusammenfassung Konglomeratische Oberkreidesandsteine im Raum Bad Harzburg wurden auf ihren Geröll- und Leitmineralgehalt hin untersucht. Aus der Leitmineralverteilung ergibt sich die stratigraphische Stellung der Emscher- und Senonvorkommen zueinander; aus der Geröllführung geht hervor, daß der Brockengranit bereits im Oberemscher im Erosionsniveau lag und die Aufrichtungszone mesozoischer Gesteine am Harznordrand auch im Schimmerwaldgebiet bis zum Quadratensenon übertage vorhanden war, obwohl sie heute hier nicht mehr zu finden ist. Ursache dieser Erscheinung ist ein Schollenabbruch aus dem Dach des Ilsenburggranits, der an der Wende Granulaten-Quadratensenon erfolgte und zu einer lokalen Überfahrung der Aufrichtungszone geführt hat. Die geologische Neuaufnahme des Paläozoikums nördlich des Ilsenburggranites stellt die heutigen Lagerungsverhältnisse dieses Gebietes klar; sie werden bei der Rekonstruktion der ursprünglichen Lagerung und des Bewegungsvorganges zugrunde gelegt, dessen Ergebnis die teilweise Überdeckung des Vorlandes ist. Ein ähnlicher Vorgang liegt auch am benachbarten Okervorsprung der Harznordrandlinie vor.Unter Berücksichtigung der Ergebnisse neuer Tiefbohrungen im Subherzyn wird eine Auffassung von Ablauf und Ursachen tektonischer Vorgänge in diesem Raum entwickelt, die der herrschenden Meinung in zahlreichen Punkten widerspricht:Eine echte Faltung des Subherzyns im Mesozoikum, die bisher vermutete starke Nordbewegung der Harzscholle und eine ausschließliche Bindung tektonischer Vorgänge in diesem Gebiet an orogene Phasen wird abgelehnt.Auslösender Vorgang aller tektonischen Erscheinungen im Subherzyn ist eine vertikale Differentialbewegung der Harz- und Vorlandscholle, die sich seit Ausgang des Paläozoikums gleichsinnig, aber mit örtlich und zeitlich wechselnder Intensität, abspielt.

ON THE DETERMINATION OF THE ROUGHNESS COEFFICIENT IN NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL WATERWAYS

SYNOPSIS

It has always been a problem for the hydraulic engineer to obtain reasonable values for the roughness in a waterway. The writer feels that the idea put forward in this essay could help the parcticing engineer to obtain a roughness value without complicated procedure.     

From Local Star Formation to Global Star Formation

In this brief report we summarise the most important points raised in the course of a two-hour evening discussion session on the above topic, organised by the author. Major questions that were debated included the universality of the IMF, the history of the star formation rate in the solar neighorhood, the star formation efficiency in molecular clouds, and the role of triggered star formation. The issue of a threshold gas surface density for star formation to occur was also critically discussed. This revised version was published online in September 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Association of spherical and ellipsoidal gravity coefficients of the Earth's potential

A comparison is drawn between the expansion of the potential in spherical harmonics on the one hand and in ellipsoidal harmonics on the other, with the objective of associating the spherical and ellipsoidal gravity coefficients of the Earth's potential.For this purpose the properties of orthogonality of the Lamé functions of the first kind have been tailored to this subject of investigation and become instrumental in establishing the mathematical expressions which relate the two classes of gravity coefficients to each other. In deriving the elements of the transition matrices elliptic integrals have been encountered whose reduction to the three kinds of canonical elliptic integrals is discussed.Presented at the Conference on Celestial Mechanics, Oberwolfach, Germany, August 17–23, 1969.

Summary These remarks trie to explain the behaviour of local wind effect on the coast under the additional influence of swell approximately running parallel to the wind's direction. Owing to the high speed of long swell waves the wind's tangential shearing strain on the water masses may become less effective than it would do if no coincidence with swell waves would occur.

La houle et l'effet local du vent

Résumé Cet essai cherche à expliquer le comportement de l'effet local du vent sous l'influence additionnelle d'une houle qui suit approximativement la direction du vent. Par suite de la grande vitesse de propagation d'une longue houle, l'effet de cisaillement tangentiel que le vent exerce sur l'eau diminuera dans le cas où l'effet local du vent coincide avec le phénomène additionnel de la houle.

Further studies on the chordal-hop theory of ionospheric long-range propagation

Summary This paper presents new results of the author's investigations on ionospheric propagation in Australia from 1952 to 1957. Considerations on path attenuation are followed by a discussion on the propagation paths to North America and Western Europe. Conclusions are in agreement with the author's previous publications in this field.

Zusammenfassung In dieser Arbeit behandelt der Verfasser neue Ergebnisse seiner Untersuchungen über ionosphärische Ausbreitung in Australien von 1952 bis 1957. Auf eine Betrachtung über die Signalschwächung folgt eine Diskussion über die Ausbreitungswege nach Nordamerika und Westeuropa. Die Folgerungen stimmen mit den früheren Veröffentlichungen des Verfassers auf diesem Gebiet überein.

Résumé L'auteur expose les nouveaux résultats de ses recherches sur la propagation ionosphérique en Australie de 1952 à 1957; il considère l'affaiblissement de la propagation des signaux et les chemins suivis par les ondes vers l'Amérique du Nord et vers l'Europe occidentale. Ces résultats concordent avec ceux qu'il a publiés précédemment.
