Landslides are very common in high-altitude Himalayan terrains. Major roads in the Himalayas are frequently blocked due to
heavy landslides and remain closed for long periods of time. Permanent mitigatory solutions to these landslides are required
to keep the highways open. Lanta Khola, located 71.2 km north of Gangtok (capital of the Indian state of Sikkim), is one of
the oldest landslides on the North Sikkim Highway and is active since 1975. The rock types on either side of the landslide
are different (augen gneiss in the east and metapelitic schist in the west), and it is believed that the Main Central Thrust
passes through the slide zone. Since the slide is invariably activated in the aftermath of heavy rainfall, it is important
to identify the subsurface structures that channel water below the landslide surface in order to understand the triggers of
slide activity. This can only be accomplished by geophysical survey; however, an appropriate geophysical technique that can
be applied in such terrains must be identified. Very low-frequency (VLF) electromagnetic survey was performed over the Lanta
Khola landside in order to delineate subsurface structures. Although a very limited number of VLF transmitters are available
worldwide, it was possible to pick up VLF signals from a number of VLF stations even in this high-altitude mountainous terrain.
VLF measurements along five profiles perpendicular to the geological strike were recorded, and a high conducting zone was
delineated from the VLF observations. This conducting zone correlates with the low resistive zone identified from gradient
resistivity profiling. The anomalies confirm that there is a water-saturated zone (soggy zone) even in the subsurface of the
slide parallel to the geological gneiss–schist contact within the Lanta Khola slide. This indicates that the conductive feature
correlates with a weak water-saturated debris layer that lies along the slide and is parallel to the geological contact. Resistive
structures on either side of the landslide zone can thus be correlated with the stable ground. It is necessary to drain out
water from the soggy zone to minimize slide activity since this zone appears to penetrate into the body of the slide. 相似文献

In the present paper, we have characterized the ambient ammonia over Delhi along with other trace gases (NH3, NO, NO2, SO2 and CO) and particulates (PM2.5 and PM10) measured during December 2011 to June 2012. The average mixing ratios of ambient NH3, NO, NO2, SO2 and CO were recorded as 21.2 ± 5.4, 19.5 ± 4.9, 17.4 ± 1.4, 1.7 ± 0.5 ppb and 1.6 ± 0.7 ppm, respectively, during winter, whereas the average mixing ratios of ambient NH3, NO, NO2, SO2 and CO were recorded as 20.8 ± 4.7, 21.7 ± 6.3, 16.8 ± 3.1, 2.2 ± 0.8 ppb and 1.8 ± 0.9 ppm, respectively, during summer. In the present case, non-significant seasonal and diurnal variations of NH3, NO, NO2, SO2 and CO were observed during both the seasons. The average monthly NH3/NH4 + ratios varied from 0.28 to 2.56 with an average value of 1.46 in winter. The higher NH3/NH4 + ratio (3.5) observed in summer indicates the abundance of NH3 in the atmosphere during summer. The higher fraction of particulate NH4 + observed in winter than summer attributes to the conversion of gaseous NH3 into NH4 +. The results emphasized that the traffic could be one of the significant sources of ambient NH3 at the urban site of Delhi as illustrated by positive correlations of NH3 with traffic-related pollutants (NO, NO2 and CO). Surface wind analysis and wind directions also support the roadside traffic and agricultural activities at the nearby area indicating possible major sources of ambient NH3 at the study site. 相似文献

An investigation has been made of the structure of sea-breeze fronts observed at Thumba mostly during the months of December to April using data from a Doppler SODAR and in situ measurements of wind components, humidity and temperature. The study shows that the vertical wind structure observed in the SODAR height range provides a distinct signature of the passage of a front and that the intensity of the front is decided by the intensity and direction of the prevailing winds as well as the amount of rotation of the wind vector during the onset of the sea-breeze. Spectral analyses of vertical winds during the passage of the front reveal a dominant periodicity of about 6 min for strong sea-breeze fronts. 相似文献

Thermal demagnetization results (316 samples) are presented for the Tertiary succession of the Riasi thrust sheet (Jammu foothills, northwestern Himalaya). Primary and secondary magnetization directions of Murree Group red beds (Miocene to Upper Eocene) sampled northeast of Jammu indicate, for this part of the Riasi thrust sheet, a clockwise rotation over about 45° with respect to the Indian shield since Late Eocene/Early Miocene time. This accords with clockwise rotations of similar magnitude observed in the Panjal Nappe and the Krol Belt, and is interpreted as representative for the northwestern Himalaya. Results from the western part of the Kalakot inlier, sampled northwest of Jammu, i.e. basal Murree claystone (Middle Eocene) and carbonate from the Subathu Group (lower Middle to Lower Eocene), indicate an aberrant 20–25° counterclockwise rotation which is of local importance only. Available observations on rotation of Himalayan thrust sheets with respect to the Indian shield, indicate that the Himalayan Arc has formed through oroclinal bending. This supports Powell and Conaghan's and Veevers et al.'s model of Greater India with large-scale intracontinental underthrusting along the Main Central Thrust beneath the Tibetan Plateau. Minimal magnitudes of underthrusting of 550 km in the Krol Belt and 650 km in the Thakkhola region are concluded. Palaeolatitude observations (herein and in [1[) agree with absolute positioning of the Indian plate based on India-Africa relative movement data fixed to a hotspot frame in the Atlantic Ocean, and with palaeolatitude observations from DSDP cores on the Indian plate. Collision-related secondary magnetic components observed both to the north and to the south of the Indus-Tsangpo Suture zone show palaeolatitudes between the equator and 7°N. Comparison of both datasets indicates that initial contact between Greater India and south-central Asia had been established in the Hindu Kush—Karakorum region by about 60 Ma ago whereas eastwards progressive suturing had advanced to the Lhasa Block segment of the Indus-Tsangpo Suture zone before 50 Ma ago. 相似文献

Different measurements of the Hubble constant(H0)are not consistent,and a tension between the CMB based methods and cosmic distance ladder based methods has been observed.Measurements from various distance based methods are also inconsistent.To aggravate the problem,the same cosmological probe(TypeⅠa SNe for instance)calibrated through different methods also provides different values of H0.We compare various distance ladder based methods through the already available unique data obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope(HST).Our analysis is based on parametric(t-test)as well as non-parametric statistical methods such as the Mann-Whitney U test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.Our results show that different methods provide different values of H0 and the differences are statistically significant.The biases in the calibration would not account for these differences as the data have been taken from a single telescope with a common calibration scheme.The unknown physical effects or issues with the empirical relations of distance measurement from different probes could give rise to these differences. 相似文献

Mn-rich ilmenites (up to 7 % MnO) have been identified in dykes cutting the Malanjkhand porphyry copper mining area in Madhya Pradesh. The dykes are hydrothermally altered and are of tholeiitic affinities. Lamprophyres have been reported from nearby areas. The presence of Mn-rich Ilmenites in the Malanjkhand copper mine dykes and the occurrence of lamprophyres and the pervasive potassium metasomatism in the area strongly suggests a possibility of finding diamondiferous rocks in the area. Such high-Mn bearing ilmenites are associated with diamondiferous deposits in other parts of the world, e.g. Juina kimberlites, Brazil. Mn-bearing ilmenite is considered as an indicator mineral for kimberlite/diamond occurrences. The presence of kimberlite pipes in Raipur district and the association of Mn-rich ilmenite with kimberlites is a fortuitous coincidence for venture-some mining companies. A probable explanation for the origin of manganese layers in the context of ‘rift’ tectonic environment is offered. Also a possible link between the dykes, quartz veins in the Malanjkhand granitic rocks and the copper mineralization is proposed. 相似文献
