Historically, the visual manifestation of the “Black Drop effect,” the appearance of a band linking the solar limb to the disk of a transiting planet near the point of internal tangency, had limited the accuracy of the determination of the Astronomical Unit and the scale of the Solar System in the 18th and 19th centuries. This problem was misunderstood in the case of Venus during its rare transits due to the presence of its atmosphere. We report on observations of the 15 November 1999 transit of Mercury obtained, without the degrading effects of the Earth's atmosphere, with the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer spacecraft. In spite of the telescope's location beyond the Earth's atmosphere, and the absence of a significant mercurian atmosphere, a faint Black Drop effect was detected. After calibration and removal of, or compensation for, both internal and external systematic effects, the only radially directed brightness anisotropies found resulted from the convolution of the instrumental point-spread function with the solar limb-darkened, back-lit, illumination function. We discuss these effects in light of earlier ground-based observations of transits of Mercury and of Venus (also including the effects of atmospheric “seeing”) to explain the historical basis for the Black Drop effect. The methodologies we outline here for improving upon transit imagery are applicable to ground-based (adaptive optics augmented) and space-based observations of the 8 June 2004 and 5-6 June 2012 transits of Venus, providing a path to achieving high-precision measurements at and near the instants of internal limb tangencies.  相似文献

The phase relations of primitive magnesian andesites and basaltic andesites from the Mt. Shasta region, N California have been determined over a range of pressure and temperature conditions and H2O contents. The experimental results are used to explore the influence of H2O and pressure on fractional crystallization and mantle melting behavior in subduction zone environments. At 200-MPa H2O-saturated conditions the experimentally determined liquid line of descent reproduces the compositional variation found in the Mt. Shasta region lavas. This calc-alkaline differentiation trend begins at the lowest values of FeO*/MgO and the highest SiO2 contents found in any arc magma system and exhibits only a modest increase in FeO*/MgO with increasing SiO2. We propose a two-stage process for the origin of these lavas. (1) Extensive hydrous mantle melting produces H2O-rich (>4.5--6 wt% H2O) melts that are in equilibrium with a refractory harzburgite (olivine + orthopyroxene) residue. Trace elements and H2O are contributed from a slab-derived fluid and/or melt. (2) This mantle melt ascends into the overlying crust and undergoes fractional crystallization. Crustal-level differentiation occurs under near-H2O saturated conditions producing the distinctive high SiO2 and low FeO*/MgO characteristics of these calc-alkaline andesite and dacite lavas. In a subset of Mt. Shasta region lavas, magnesian pargasitic amphibole provides evidence of high pre-eruptive H2O contents (>10 wt% H2O) and lower crustal crystallization pressures (800 MPa). Igneous rocks that possess major and trace element characteristics similar to those of the Mt. Shasta region lavas are found at Adak, Aleutians, Setouchi Belt, Japan, the Mexican Volcanic Belt, Cook Island, Andes and in Archean trondhjemite--tonalite--granodiorite suites (TTG suites). Phase transformation and crystal growth in nanoparticles may happen via mechanisms distinct from those in bulk materials. We combine experimental studies of as-synthesized and hydrothermally coarsened titania (TiO2) and zinc sulfide (ZnS) with thermodynamic analysis, kinetic modeling and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, synchrotron X-ray absorption and scattering, and UV-vis spectroscopy. At low temperatures, phase transformation in titania nanoparticles occurs predominantly via interface nucleation at particle–particle contacts. Coarsening and crystal growth of titania nanoparticles can be described using the Smoluchowski equation. Oriented attachment-based crystal growth was common in both hydrothermal solutions and under dry conditions. MD simulations predict large structural perturbations within very fine particles, and are consistent with experimental results showing that ligand binding and change in aggregation state can cause phase transformation without particle coarsening. Such phenomena affect surface reactivity, thus may have important roles in geochemical cycling.  相似文献

Historical dates of ice-affected flows for 16 rural, unregulated rivers in northern New England, USA were analyzed. The total annual days of ice-affected flow decreased significantly (p < 0.1) over the 20th century at 12 of the 16 rivers. On average, for the nine longest-record rivers, the total annual days of ice-affected flow decreased by 20 days from 1936 to 2000, with most of the decrease occurring from the 1960s to 2000. Four of the 16 rivers had significantly later first dates of ice-affected flow in the fall. Twelve of the 16 rivers had significantly earlier last dates of ice-affected flow in the spring. On average, the last dates became earlier by 11 days from 1936 to 2000 with most of the change occurring from the 1960s to 2000. The total annual days of ice-affected flow were significantly correlated with November through April air temperatures (r = −0.70) and with November through April precipitation (r = −0.52). The last spring dates were significantly correlated with March through April air temperatures (r = −0.73) and with January through April precipitation (r = −0.37). We discuss observations of the Moon at a wavelength of 49.3 cm made with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Interferometer. These observations have been fit to models in order to estimate the lunar dielectric constant, the equatorial subsurface temperature, the latitude dependence of the subsurface temperature, and the subsurface temperature gradient. The models are most consistent with a dielectric constant of 2.52 ± 0.01 (formal errors), an equatorial subsurface temperature of 249?5+8K, and a change in the subsurface temperature with latitude (ψ), which is proportional to cos0.38ψ. Since the temperature of the Moon has been measured by the Apollo Lunar Heat Flow Experiment, we have been able to use our determination of the equatorial temperature to estimate the error in the flux density calibration scale at 49.3cm (608 MHz). This results in a correction factor of 1.03 ± 0.04, which must be applied to the flux density scale. This factor is much different from 1.21 ± 0.09 estimated by Muhleman et al. (1973) from the brightness temperature of Venus and apparently indicates that the observed decrease in the brightness temperature of Venus at long wavelengths is a real effect.The estimates of the temperature gradient, which are based on the measurement of limb darkening, are small and negative (temperature decreases with depth) and may be insignificantly different from zero since they are only as large as their formal errors. We estimate that a temperature gradient in excess of 0.6K/m at 10m depth would have been observed. Thus, a temperature gradient like that measured in situ at the Apollo 15 and 17 landing sites in the upper 2m of the regolith is not typical of the entire lunar frontside at the 10m depths where the 49.3 cm wavelength emission originates. This result may indicate that the mean lunar heat flow is lower than that measured at the Apollo landing sites, that the thermal conductivity is greater at 10m depth than it is at 2m depth, or that the radio opacity is greater at 10m depth than at 2m depth. The negative estimates of the temperature gradient indicate that the Moon appeared limb bright and might be explained by scattering of the emission from boulders or an interface with solid rock. The presence of solid rock at 10m depths will probably cause heat flows like those measured by Apollo to be unobservable by our interferometric method at long wavelengths, since it will cause both the thermal conductivity and radio opacity of the regolith to increase. Thus, our data may be most consistent with a change in the physical properties of the regolith to those of solid rock or a mixture of rock and soil at depths of 7 to 16m. Our results show that future radio measurements for heat flow determinations must utilize wavelengths considerably shorter than 50 cm (25 cm or less) to avoid the rock regions below the regolith.  相似文献

It is possible for large particles of NH3 ice to explain two phenomena associated with observations of thermal infrared emission from the atmosphere of Saturn: (1) the depression of thermal brightness near the equator, which is coincident with a visibly bright zone-like region, and (2) some disagreements between infrared and radio occultation results. Particles of NH3 ice can provide the requisite opacity to explain the contrast between the equatorial region and the brighter area near 15°S for Pioneer Saturn Infrared Radiometer 45-μm channel data. NH3 ice particle clouds can also reconcile the 45-μm brightness of both regions (near the equator and near 15°S) with the mean temperatures structure of the Voyager 2 radio occultation results. A cloud model with ice particles distributed in equal ratio with gas particles up to the 100-mbar pressure level best fits the equatorial data; a thinner cloud or one which does not extend higher than the 400-mbar limit of the convective region best matches data for the 15°S region. At 20 μm, however, the radio occultation temperature structure predicts brightnesses which are lower than those observed for both regions, and it could indicate the possibility that another source of opacity which is latitudinally variable exists in the stratosphere.  相似文献

We present new R -band photometric data for 447 galaxies, gathered for the 'Streaming Motions of Abell Clusters' (SMAC) project. The data comprise 629 individual measurements of the Fundamental Plane (FP) parameters effective radius ( R e) and surface brightness (〈 μ 〉e), derived from r 1/4-law profile fitting. More than a third of the galaxies were observed more than once. The photometric precision is ∼0.02 mag as judged from comparisons of aperture photometry between repeat observations of galaxies. The combination     which enters into the Fundamental Plane relation, has internal uncertainties of ∼0.008, corresponding to < 2 per cent in estimated distance. Taken individually, the (correlated) internal errors in R e and 〈 μ 〉e are ∼8 per cent and ∼0.12 mag respectively. Comparisons with literature data constrain the external random errors to ≲5 per cent in distance (per observation), which is small in comparison to the ∼20 per cent scatter in the FP. The data will form part of a merged catalogue of FP parameters, presented in a companion paper.  相似文献

This experimental study examines the mineral/melt partitioning of Na, Ti, La, Sm, Ho, and Lu among high-Ca clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and silicate melts analogous to varying degrees of peridotite partial melting. Experiments performed at a pressure of 1.5 GPa and temperatures of 1,285 to 1,345 °C produced silicate melts saturated with high-Ca clinopyroxene, plagioclase and/or spinel, and, in one case, orthopyroxene and garnet. Partition coefficients measured in experiments in which clinopyroxene coexists with basaltic melt containing ~18 to 19 wt% Al2O3 and up to ~3 wt% Na2O are consistent with those determined experimentally in a majority of the previous studies, with values of ~0.05 for the light rare earths and of ~0.70 for the heavy rare earths. The magnitudes of clinopyroxene/melt partition coefficients for the rare earth elements correlate with pyroxene composition in these experiments, and relative compatibilities are consistent with the effects of lattice strain energy. Clinopyroxene/melt partition coefficients measured in experiments in which the melt contains ~20 wt% Al2O3 and ~4 to 8 wt% Na2O are unusually large (e.g., values for Lu of up to 1.33±0.05) and are not consistent with the dependence on pyroxene composition found in previous studies. The magnitudes of the partition coefficients measured in these experiments correlate with the degree of polymerization of the melt, rather than with crystal composition, indicating a significant melt structural influence on trace element partitioning. The ratio of non-bridging oxygens to tetrahedrally coordinated cations (NBO/T) in the melt provides a measure of this effect; melt structure has a significant influence on trace element compatibility only for values of NBO/T less than ~0.49. This result suggests that when ascending peridotite intersects the solidus at relatively low pressures (~1.5 GPa or less), the compatibility of trace elements in the residual solid varies significantly during the initial stages of partial melting in response to the changing liquid composition. It is unlikely that this effect is important at higher pressures due to the increased compatibility of SiO2, Na2O, and Al2O3 in the residual peridotite, and correspondingly larger values of NBO/T for small degree partial melts.Editorial responsibility: T.L. The Landes silicate-bearing octahedrite is a new find from Grant County, West Virginia. Minerals and their compositions are very similar to those in Odessa-type silicate inclusions. The angular nature of the inclusions, recrystallization textures, and mineral compositions indicate a “xenolithic” origin for the inclusions.  相似文献
