An axially-symmetric, rapidly-rotating magnetosphere containing low-energy plasma is considered. The resulting plasma sheet is presumed isothermal and thin compared with the radius of the sheet. Solutions of the model equations are found which include the effects of centrifugal, pressure and electro-magnetic forces. These solutions show that the sheet has a constant thickness and that the pressure decays exponentially with distance from the equatorial plane. The calculated curves for the magnetic induction field are compared with the observed field of Jupiter.  相似文献

A cloud-resolving model is configured to span the full meridional extent of the tropical atmosphere and have sufficient zonal extent to permit the representation of tropical cloud super-clusters. This is made computationally feasible by the use of anisotropic horizontal grids where one horizontal coordinate direction has over an order of magnitude finer resolution than the other direction. Typically, the meridional direction is chosen to have the coarser resolution (40 km grid spacing) and the zonal direction has enough resolution to ‘permit’ crude convective squall line ascent (1 km grid spacing). The aim was to run in cloud-resolving model (CRM) mode yet still have sufficient meridional resolution and extent to capture the equatorial trapped waves and the Hadley circulation. The large-scale circulation is driven by imposed uniform tropospheric cooling in conjunction with a fixed sea surface temperature distribution. At quasi-equilibrium the flow is characterized by sub-tropical jetstreams, tropical squall line systems that form eastward-propagating super-clusters, tropical depressions and even hurricanes.Two scientific issues are briefly addressed by the simulations: what forces the Hadley circulation and the nature of stratospheric waves appearing in the simulation. It is found that the presence of a meridional sea surface temperature gradient is not sufficient on its own to force a realistic Hadley circulation even though convection communicates the underlying temperature gradient to the atmosphere. It is shown in a simulation that accounts for the observed time and zonal-mean momentum forcing effect of large-scale eddies (originating in middle latitudes) that the heaviest precipitation is concentrated near the equator in association with moisture flux convergence driven by the Trade winds.A spectral analysis of the stratospheric waves found on the equator using the dispersion relation for equatorially-trapped waves provides strong evidence for the existence of a domain-scale Kelvin wave together with eastward and westward propagating inertia-gravity waves. The eastward-propagating stratospheric waves appear to be part of a convectively coupled wave system travelling at about 15 ms−1.  相似文献

Thermoluminescence (TL) and infrared-stimulated luminescence (IRSL) sediment-dating methods have been applied to paleosol- and tephra-bearing loess sequences younger than marine oxygen isotope stage (MIS) 7 at three important sites. TL ages indicate the development of significant paleosols ∼75,000 and ∼30,000 yr ago in the loess sequence at the Gold Hill site. Relatively minor soil development occurred ∼70,000 and ∼48,000 yr ago. Like the ∼75,000-yr-old soil, the 30,000-yr-old soil is apparently of global extent, and consistent in timing with inferred warm intervals elsewhere (e.g., Greenland, Europe, western and central China). At Birch Hill, replicate TL dating of primary loess combined with two earlier TL results from the same site, and with an earlier mean fission-track-glass-shard age of 140,000 ± 10,000 yr for the associated Old Crow tephra, yield a more precise numeric age of 142,300 ± 6600 yr for this Alaska/Yukon chronostratigraphic marker ash bed. Three of the TL ages at the Halfway House site are difficult to interpret, but combined with other evidence, they indicate: (1) the upper 5-6 m of loess from Halfway House is not part of the Gold Hill Loess (equivalent to pre-MIS 5 age) as long thought by T.L. Péwé, but rather is much younger; (2) the regionally significant variegated tephra, found in the Fairbanks and Klondike areas and previously thought to be older than MIS 5, has an age of 77,800 ± 4100 yr (late MIS 5).  相似文献

Abstract   Sediments deposited off the Nicoya Peninsula advect large volumes of water as they enter the Costa Rica subduction zone. Seismic reflection data, together with results from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 170, show that hemipelagic mud comprises the upper ∼135 m of the sediment column (ranging from 0 to 210 m). The lower ∼215 m of the sediment column (ranging from 0 to 470 m) is pelagic carbonate ooze. We analyzed samples from 60 shallow (<7 m) cores to characterize the spatial variability of sediment composition on the incoming Cocos Plate. The bulk hemipelagic sediment is 10 wt% opal and 60 wt% smectite on average, with no significant variations along strike; the pelagic chalk contains approximately 2 wt% opal and <1 wt% smectite. Initially, most of the water (96%) in the subducting sediment is stored in pore spaces, but the pore water is expelled during the early stages of subduction by compaction and tectonic consolidation. Approximately 3.6% of the sediment's total water volume enters the subduction zone as interlayer water in smectite; only 0.4% of the water is bound in opal. Once subducting strata reach depths greater than 6 km (more than 30 km inboard of the subduction front), porosity drops to less than 15%, and temperature rises to greater than 60°C. Under those conditions, discrete pulses of opal and smectite dehydration should create local compartments of fluid overpressure, which probably influence fluid flow patterns and reduce effective stress along the plate boundary fault.  相似文献

New multi-beam bathymetric data from the Philippine Sea and northwest Pacific Basin reveal linear chains of small (less than 40 km3) domed-shaped volcanoes (Philippine) and coned-shaped volcanoes (Pacific) rising 100–1000 m above the 6 km deep ocean floor. Some appear to have well-developed collapsed calderas and spines. Their morphology suggest recent formation in supposedly stable mid-plate regions and their occurrence in linear chains approximately parallel to plate motion may suggest an origin by extrusion from “mini-hot spot” plumes.  相似文献

40Ar/39Ar incremental heating experiments were applied to hornblendes, coarse-grained biotites and K-feldspars from 1400 m.y. old rocks near the contact with the ~60 m.y. old Eldora stock in the Front Range of Colorado. The aim was to distinguish, on the basis of argon isotopic data alone, a partially re-set K-Ar date from an undisturbed or a completely overprinted K-Ar date. In the laboratory heating of biotites the radiogenic argon (40Ar*) and potassium-derived39Ar (39Ar*) were released in two stages — in the range ~600–900°C and above ~900°C. The two biotites furthest from the contact and the one adjacent to the contact give well-defined apparent-age plateaus at ~1230 m.y. and 63 m.y. respectively for all argon released above ~600°C. The 1230-m.y. date may represent a thermal event or the end of a long cooling while the 63-m.y. date essentially represents the time of reheating. Partially overprinted biotites at intermediate distances have significantly anomalous plunges in apparent ages for argon released above ~900°C, thus distinguishing them from undisturbed and completely outgassed biotites.The bulk of the40Ar* and39Ar* in the hornblendes was released in the range ~950–1100°C. The hornblende furthest from the contact gives a well-defined plateau at 1400 m.y. for the 98% of the argon that was released above ~950°C. A partially overprinted hornblende from near the contact gives an apparent plateau at ~1050 m.y. The existence of such a false plateau precludes the distinction of partially overprinted K-Ar hornblende dates from undisturbed K-Ar hornblende dates without independent evidence. Reasonable estimates of the time of reheating are not recovered in the age spectra for partially overprinted hornblende and biotites.For the feldspars the bulk of the40Ar* and39Ar* was released in the laboratory heating between about 900°C and 1200°C, probably reflecting phase changes near these temperatures. The argon released below about 900°C records reasonable maximum dates for the time of the thermal overprinting. For the microcline 22500 (the sample number specifies the distance, in feet, from the contact) this effect is slight — a minimum date of 147 m.y. occurs in 2.3% of the total39Ar*. For samples 2400, 1070, and 85 the respective minimum dates are similar at 72, 81, and 68 m.y. and dramatically improve on the total or integrated dates of 238, 358 and 211 m.y. The high-temperature (>900°C) apparent ages for these three feldspars do not define plateaus and are geologically meaningless. The high-temperature apparent ages for the last 50% of the39Ar* released from 22500 do define a plateau, but the 1060-m.y. date is also probably geologically meaningless.  相似文献

Isovaline is present in the Murchison meteorite as a racemic mixture (about equal concentrations of the R and S enantiomers). Since isovaline does not have a hydrogen atom on its asymmetric α-carbon atom, the racemic mixture could not have formed by commonly accepted mechanisms of racemization. Thus, isovaline in the meteorite most probably was synthesized as a racemic mixture and is not the result of the racemization of either the R or S enantiomer. Other chiral amino acids in the meteorite are present as racemic mixtures, and were probably synthesized in a similar manner by abiotic, extraterrestrial processes.  相似文献

As climate change may modify the hydrological cycle significantly, understanding the impact on river flow is important because it affects long‐term water resources planning. Here, we describe a high‐resolution British assessment of changes in river flows in the 2050s under 11 different realisations of HadRM3. In winter, river flows may either increase or decrease, with a wide range of possible decreases in summer flow.
