This paper deals with the investigation of the Mars subsurface by means of data collected by the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding working at few megahertz frequencies. A data processing strategy, which combines a simple inversion model and an accurate procedure for data selection is presented. This strategy permits to mitigate the theoretical and practical difficulties of the inverse problem arising because of the inaccurate knowledge of the parameters regarding both the scenario under investigation and the radiated electromagnetic field impinging on the Mars surface. The results presented in this paper show that it is possible to reliably retrieve the electromagnetic properties of deeper structures if such strategy is accurately applied. An example is given here, where the analysis of the data collected on Gemina Lingula, a region of the North Polar layer deposits, allowed us to retrieve permittivity values for the basal unit in agreement with those usually associated to the Earth basaltic rocks. 相似文献

In past years, seismic response of asymmetric structures has been frequently analysed by means of single-storey models, because
of their simplicity and low computational cost. However, it is widely believed that use of more realistic multi-storey models
is needed in order to investigate effects of some system characteristics (such as overstrength, higher modes of vibration,
etc.) that make behaviour of multi-storey schemes different from that of single-storey systems. This paper examines effects
of the overstrength in element cross-sections on the seismic behaviour of multi-storey asymmetric buildings. It is shown that
in actual buildings this characteristic, which is sometimes very variable both in plan and along the height of the building,
may lead to distributions of ductility demands different from those expected according to the results from single-storey models.
Consequently, torsional provisions, which aim at reducing ductility demands of single-storey asymmetric systems to those of
the corresponding torsionally balanced systems, should be re-checked in light of the behaviour of realistic multi-storey buildings. 相似文献

The row of pyroclastic cones named Mts. Sartorius, outcropping on the NE flank of Etna, formed in 1865 during a lateral eruption
that lasted about 6 months. The event was eye witnessed and described by numerous scientists and reporters. In this work,
we use their observations to reconstruct the eruption chronology and scenario, and carry out a detailed geomorphologic survey
to identify the eruptive features and pyroclastic deposits. The 1865 eruption began on 29 January along a segment of the main
system of fractures oriented ENE–WSW, radial to the central conduit. After 30 January, a secondary system of fractures trending
NNW–SSE was simultaneously active. The six larger Mts. Sartorius cones developed since 3 February along the lower extension
of the radial system. They are markedly asymmetric due to the persistent winds blowing at the time and to the pre-existing
topography formed on underlying deposits, previously unreported, that we have recognized. Now, about 150 years after the eruption,
most of the eruptive vents and fractures are no longer observable in the field, being mostly hidden by products of subsequent
phases of the eruption and by younger epiclastic deposits. 相似文献

The effects of cresols on the photosynthesis and growth of natural marine phytoplankton assemblages from the Scripps Pier at La Jolla, California, USA were measured. In two experiments, in which dinoflagellates were the dominant algae, photosynthesis (measured by 14C uptake) was inhibited at concentrations > 100 μg litre?1 and the concentration giving half-maximal photosynthesis was 10,000 μg litre?1. In a third experiment, in which diatoms were dominant, photosynthesis was not inhibited until levels > 10,000 μg litre?1 were reached and the half-maximal concentration was 20,000 μg litre?1. These experiments suggested that dinoflagellates were more sensitive to cresols than diatoms. However, the reverse was true in an experiment using cultures. In a long-term growth experiment (natural assemblages from the Scripps Pier), only a level of 88,000 μg litre?1 completely inhibited growth. There was a two-day lag in growth at 8500 μg litre?1, but the algae recovered and grew as well as the controls which contained no cresols. This experiment was started with a mixed diatom-dinoflagellate-microflagellate population but only the diatoms grew. High concentrations of cresols (> 900 μg litre?1) resulted in a decrease in the diatom Skeletonema costatum, compared with the controls. Otherwise there was no selection for resistant species. In these experiments, cresols were measured by extraction with methylene chloride from seawater followed by measurement by UV absorption. In all experiments cresol levels decreased with time. This was attributed to uptake by phytoplankton and bacterial degradation. 相似文献

Abstract. Polychaete community structure in Valle Magnavacca, the largest basin of the Valli di Comacchio (Northern Adriatic Sea) lagoonal ecosystem, was analyzed in a three‐year study. Three shallow‐water stations were sampled at about 3‐month intervals. Univariate and multivariate analyses were utilized to investigate community structure changes in relation to natural and man‐induced disturbance. The polychaete community at station 3, in the central area of the lagoon, was the most disturbed, while that of station 2 was the most well structured. We hypothesize that polychaete community structure results from regular seasonal disturbances which lead to almost predictable fluctuations in species abundance. Superimposed on these regular cycles are acute disturbance events that further reduce species abundance or exclude species from the habitat. 相似文献

Seagrass leaf litter decomposition is a key component of marine carbon flow driven by both biotic and abiotic factors, including water movement. In this study, we analyse Posidonia oceanica litter decomposition and invertebrate colonization in three sites with different hydrodynamics in a coastal basin. Litterbags were put on the sea bed along a gradient of distance from the open sea, implying a different level of water exchange. Leaf litter mass loss and carbon and nitrogen concentration were analysed, and density and biomass of benthic invertebrates colonizing litterbags were recorded after 3, 7, 14, 47, 101, 152 and 221 days. Results showed that in the most sheltered site, the leaf litter decomposition rate, the invertebrate density and biomass and the detrital carbon release were the lowest. The reduction of the decomposition rates of seagrass leaves in the site characterized by low hydrodynamic forces may promote organic matter burial and carbon stocks, emphasizing the role of coastal basins such as ponds and lagoons as sinks of carbon and the important role of seagrass detritus in the Blue Carbon global balance. 相似文献

A conceptual-stochastic approach to short time runoff data modelling is proposed, according to the aim of reproducing the
hydrological aspects of the streamflow process and of preserving as much as possible the dynamics of the process itself. This
latter task implies preservation of streamflow characteristics at higher scales of aggregation and, within a conceptual framework,
involves compatibility with models proposed for the runoff process at those scales. At a daily time scale the watershed response
to the effective rainfall is considered as deriving from the response of three linear reservoirs, respectively representing
contributions to streamflows of large deep aquifers, with over-year response lag, of aquifers which run dry by the end of
the dry season and of subsurface runoff. The surface runoff component is regarded as an uncorrelated point process. Considering
the occurrences of effective rainfall events as generated by an independent Poisson process, the output of the linear system
represents a conceptually-based multiple shot noise process. Model identification and parameter estimation are supported by
information related to the aggregated runoff process, in agreement to the conceptual framework proposed, and this allows parameter
parsimony, efficient estimation and effectiveness of the streamflow reproduction. Good performances emerged from the model

A design procedure for seismic retrofitting of concentrically and eccentrically braced frame buildings is proposed and validated in this paper. Rocking walls are added to the existing system to ensure an almost uniform distribution of the interstorey displacement in elevation. To achieve direct and efficient control over the seismic performance, the design procedure is founded on the displacement‐based approach and makes use of overdamped elastic response spectra. The top displacement capacity of the building is evaluated based on a rigid lateral deformed configuration of the structure and on the ductility capacity of the dissipative members of the braced frames. The equivalent viscous damping ratio of the braced structure with rocking walls is calculated based on semi‐empirical relationships specifically calibrated in this paper for concentrically and eccentrically braced frames. If the equivalent viscous damping ratio of the structure is lower than the required equivalent viscous damping ratio, viscous dampers are added and arranged between the rocking walls and adjacent reaction columns. The design internal forces of the rocking walls are evaluated considering the contributions of more than one mode of vibration. The proposed design procedure is applied to a large set of archetype braced frame buildings and its effectiveness verified by nonlinear dynamic analysis. 相似文献
