A benthic survey was carried out in 1973 at the servicing of a 1285 m long submarine pipe designed to achieve pollution abatement in the Gulf of La Napoule (Cannes, French Mediterranean coast) and repeated 4 years later (1977). This last survey points to a good recovery of benthic communities in the eastern part of the Gulf (off Cannes) but a severe change in the western part of the Gulf with the appearance, in a deposition area, of the species Scolelepis fuliginosa and Capitella capitata which are highly characteristic of polluted areas and which had not been sampled during the first survey.  相似文献

A method developed recently for constructing tectonic subsidence curves in early Paleozoic miogeoclines has produced new evidence for the breakup of a late Proterozoic supercontinent. Tectonic subsidence analyses in miogeoclines of eastern and western North America, northwestern Argentina, the Middle East and northwestern Australia limit the timing of the continental breakup to between 625 and 555 Ma. These results refine the implications of a much broader range of radiometric ages of rift-related igneous rocks and biostratigraphic ages of the transition from active extension to passive subsidence in miogeoclines.

The recognition of the timing and extent of rifting has led to testable hypotheses for latest Proterozoic and early Paleozoic continental histories. Breakup and onset of drift along an extensive system of continental fractures within a relatively short period of time would generate a large amount of young ocean floor, thereby reducing the volume of the global ocean basin and causing a sea level rise. Maximum reduction of ocean basin volume would postdate the time of breakup, probably by about 70 m.y., placing the transgressive peak at a time not older then about 510–520 Ma. That age agrees well with the time of maximum flooding on the continents close to the end of the Cambrian. Restriction of the breakup to between 625 and 555 Ma reduces the time gap between an essentially intact late Proterozoic supercontinent and the oldest reliable paleomagnetic reconstruction of the dispersed continents at about 560 Ma. A continental reconstruction produced by rotating Laurentia and Baltica into Gondwana a minimum distance from the 560 Ma position is consistent with limited geologic data. However, that reconstruction places Laurentia and Baltica in low latitudes which is difficult to reconcile with the absence of evaporites in syn-rift complexes in both continents.  相似文献

Auroral ultraviolet spectra in the range 1200–3200 A have been obtained by the spectrometer onboard the OGO-4 satellite. Emissions of N2, H, O and N are readily identified. Atomic and molecular intensities are deduced from the comparison with a synthetic spectrum and compare reasonably well with some previous measurements and calculations. A feature at 2150 A is assigned to the (1-0) NO γ band. Taking into consideration the various excitation mechanisms of NO(A2σ) we propose that the energy transfer from N2 metastable molecules to oxygen accounts for the excitation of the NO γ bands. In particular, we suggest that the resonant reaction between O2 and highly metastable N2(W3Δ) molecules may be a major source of NO(A2σ).  相似文献

Water regimes in the Brazilian Cerrados are sensitive to climatological disturbances and human intervention. The risk that critical water-table levels are exceeded over long periods of time can be estimated by applying stochastic methods in modeling the dynamic relationship between water levels and driving forces such as precipitation and evapotranspiration. In this study, a transfer function-noise model, the so called PIRFICT-model, is applied to estimate the dynamic relationship between water-table depth and precipitation surplus/deficit in a watershed with a groundwater monitoring scheme in the Brazilian Cerrados. Critical limits were defined for a period in the Cerrados agricultural calendar, the end of the rainy season, when extremely shallow levels (<0.5-m depth) can pose a risk to plant health and machinery before harvesting. By simulating time-series models, the risk of exceeding critical thresholds during a continuous period of time (e.g. 10 days) is described by probability levels. These simulated probabilities were interpolated spatially using universal kriging, incorporating information related to the drainage basin from a digital elevation model. The resulting map reduced model uncertainty. Three areas were defined as presenting potential risk at the end of the rainy season. These areas deserve attention with respect to water-management and land-use planning.  相似文献

The degree of hydrological connectivity is mainly determined by the spatial organisation of heterogeneity. A meaningful and aggregate abstraction of spatial patterns is one of the promising means to gain fundamental insights into this complex interaction and can, moreover, be used as a tool to acquire a profound understanding of the major controls of catchment hydrology. In order to disclose such controls, pattern‐process relationships and the explanatory power of landscape metrics were tested by simulating the runoff of differently patterned virtual basins, generated by neutral landscape models and fractal networks and solved by a surface hydrological model composed of kinematic wave routing and Green‐Ampt infiltration. A total of 23 landscape metrics quantified the spatial patterns and were subsequently related to the functional connectivity, assessed as the proportion of internal runoff generation constituting the hydrological response at the outlet. Landscape metrics allowed the identification of dominant features of heterogeneity that explained the observed connectivity, and to disclose changes in control with class abundance. Therefore, landscape metrics are a useful tool for basin comparison and classification in terms of the dominant processes and the corresponding model structure requirements. The temporal signature of thermal emission from a volcano is a valuable clue to the processes taking place both at and beneath the surface. The Galileo Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) observed the volcano Prometheus, on the jovian moon Io, on multiple occasions between 1996 and 2002. The 5 micron (μm) brightness of this volcano shows considerable variation from orbit to orbit. Prometheus exhibits increases in thermal emission that indicate episodic (though non-periodic) effusive activity in a manner akin to the current Pu'u 'O'o-Kupaianaha (afterwards referred to as the Pu'u 'O'o) eruption of Kilauea, Hawai'i. The volume of material erupted during one Prometheus eruption episode (defined as the interval from minimum thermal emission to peak and back to minimum) from 6 November 1996 to 7 May 1997 is estimated to be ∼0.8 km3, with a peak instantaneous volumetric flux (effusion rate) of ∼140 m3 s−1, and an averaged volumetric flux (eruption rate) of ∼49 m3 s−1. These quantities are used to model subsurface structure, magma storage and magma supply mechanisms, and likely magma chamber depth. Prometheus appears to be supplied by magma from a relatively shallow magma chamber, with a roof at a minimum depth of ∼2-3 km and a maximum depth of ∼14 km. This is a much shallower depth range than sources of supply proposed for explosive, possibly ultramafic, eruptions at Pillan and Tvashtar. As Prometheus-type effusive activity is widespread on Io, shallow magma chambers containing magma of basaltic or near-basaltic composition and density may be common. This analysis strengthens the analogy between Prometheus and Pu'u 'O'o, at least in terms of eruption style. Even though the style of eruption appears to be similar (effusive emplacement of thin, insulated, compound pahoehoe flows) the scale of activity at Prometheus greatly exceeds current activity at Pu'u 'O'o in terms of volume erupted, area covered, and magma flux. Whereas the estimated magma chamber at Prometheus dwarfs the Pu'u 'O'o magma chamber, it fits within expectations if the Pu'u 'O'o chamber were scaled for the greater volumetric flux and lower gravity of Io. Recent volumetric eruption rates derived from Galileo data for Prometheus were considerably smaller than the rate that produced the extensive flows formed in the ∼17 years between the Voyager and Galileo missions. These smaller eruption rates, coupled with the fact that flows are not expanding laterally, may mean that the immediate heat source that generates the Prometheus plume is simultaneously running out of available volatiles and the thermal energy that drives mobilization of volatiles. This raises the question of whether the current Prometheus eruption is in its last throes.  相似文献
