We present an analysis of the relative bias between early- and late-type galaxies in the Two-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) – as defined by the η parameter of Madgwick et al., which quantifies the spectral type of galaxies in the survey. We calculate counts in cells for flux-limited samples of early- and late-type galaxies, using approximately cubical cells with sides ranging from 7 to  42 h −1 Mpc  . We measure the variance of the counts in cells using the method of Efstathiou et al., which we find requires a correction for a finite volume effect equivalent to the integral constraint bias of the autocorrelation function. Using a maximum-likelihood technique we fit lognormal models to the one-point density distribution, and develop methods of dealing with biases in the recovered variances resulting from this technique. We then examine the joint density distribution function,   f (δE, δL)  , and directly fit deterministic bias models to the joint counts in cells. We measure a linear relative bias of ≈1.3, which does not vary significantly with ℓ. A deterministic linear bias model is, however, a poor approximation to the data, especially on small scales  (ℓ≤ 28  h −1 Mpc)  where deterministic linear bias is excluded at high significance. A power-law bias model with index   b 1≈ 0.75  is a significantly better fit to the data on all scales, although linear bias becomes consistent with the data for  ℓ≳ 40  h −1 Mpc  .  相似文献

The quest for the cosmological parameters has come to fruition with the identification of a number of supernovae at a redshift of     . Analyses of the brightness of these standard candles reveal that the Universe is dominated by a large cosmological constant. The recent identification of the     SN 1997ff in the northern Hubble Deep Field has provided further evidence for this cosmology. Here we examine the case for gravitational lensing of SN 1997ff owing to the presence of galaxies lying along our line of sight. We find that, while the alignment of SN 1997ff with foreground masses is not favourable for it to be multiply imaged and strongly magnified, two galaxies do lie close enough to result in significant magnification:     for the case where these elliptical galaxies have a velocity dispersion of 200 km s−1. Given the small difference between supernova brightnesses in different cosmologies, detailed modelling of the gravitational lensing properties of the intervening matter is therefore required before the true cosmological significance of SN 1997ff can be deduced.  相似文献

Statistical studies indicate that the 271 point sources of high-energy gamma rays belong to two groups: a galactic population and an isotropic extragalactic population. Many unidentified extragalactic sources are certainly blazars, and it is the intention of this work to uncover gamma-ray blazars missed by previous attempts. Until recently, searches for blazar counterparts to unidentified EGRET sources have focused on finding AGN that have 5-GHz radio flux densities S 5 near or above 1 Jy. However, the recent blazar identification of 3EG J2006-2321 (S 5 = 260 mJy) and other work suggest that careful studies of weaker flat-spectrum sources may be fruitful. In this spirit, error circles of four high-latitude unidentified EGRET sources have been searched for 5-GHz sources. The gamma-ray sources are 3EG J1133+0033, 3EG J1212+2304, 3EG J1222+2315, and 3EG J1227+4302. Within the error contours of each of the four sources are found six radio candidates; by observing the positions of the radio sources with the 0.81-m Tenagra II telescope it is determined that 14 of these 24 radio sources have optical counterparts with R < 22. Eight of these from two different EGRET sources have been observed in the B, V, and R bands in more than one epoch and the analysis of these data is ongoing. Any sources that are found to be variable will be the objects of multi-epoch polarimetry studies.  相似文献

Distances and metallicities for 17 Local Group galaxies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We have obtained Johnson V and Gunn  i photometry for a large number of Local Group galaxies using the Isaac Newton Telescope Wide Field Camera (INT WFC). The majority of these galaxies are members of the M31 subgroup and the observations are deep enough to study the top few magnitudes of the red giant branch in each system. We previously measured the location of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) for Andromeda I, Andromeda II and M33 to within systematic uncertainties of typically <0.05 mag. As the TRGB acts as a standard candle in old, metal-poor stellar populations, we were able to derive distances to each of these galaxies. Here we derive TRGB distances to the giant spiral galaxy M31 and 13 additional dwarf galaxies – NGC 205, 185, 147, Pegasus, WLM, LGS3, Cetus, Aquarius, And III, V, VI, VII and the newly discovered dwarf spheroidal And IX. The observations for each of the dwarf galaxies were intentionally taken in photometric conditions. In addition to the distances, we also self-consistently derive the median metallicity of each system from the colour of their red giant branches. This allows us to take into account the small metallicity variation of the absolute I magnitude of the TRGB. The homogeneous nature of our data and the identical analysis applied to each of the 17 Local Group galaxies ensures that these estimates form a reliable set of distance and metallicity determinations that are ideal for comparative studies of Local Group galaxy properties.  相似文献

Recent studies have demonstrated that detailed monitoring of gravitational microlensing events can reveal the presence of planets orbiting the microlensed source stars. With the potential of probing planets in the Galactic bulge and Magellanic Clouds, such detections greatly increase the volume over which planets can be found. This paper expands on the original studies by considering the effect of planetary phase on the form of the resultant microlensing light curve. It is found that crescent-like sources can undergo substantially more magnification than a uniformly illuminated disc, the model typically employed in studying such planets. In fact, such a circularly symmetric model is found to suffer a minimal degree of magnification when compared with the crescent models. The degree of magnification is also a strong function of the planet's orientation with respect to the microlensing caustic. The form of the magnification variability is strongly dependent on the planetary phase and from which direction the planet is swept by the caustic, providing further clues to the geometry of the planetary system. As the amount of light reflected from a planet also depends on its phase, the detection of extreme crescent-like planets requires the advent of 30-m class telescopes, while light curves of planets at more moderate phases can be determined with today's 10-m telescopes.  相似文献
