Norwegian coastal waters are subject to PAH contamination from electrochemical industries such as aluminium smelters. Evidence of PAH exposure has been established in fish and bivalves. The present study tests the applicability of a novel crustacean PAH exposure biomarker to a PAH contamination gradient in the field (Karmsund Strait, SW Norway). Fluorescence analysis of urine samples collected from crabs at each site revealed 1-OH pyrene "equivalent" levels (indicative of pyrogenic PAH contamination) decreased with increasing distance from a point source of pyrogenic PAH (a large aluminium works). The assay was shown to be suitable for the detection of PAH exposure in wild crustacean populations, for discriminating between contaminated and clean sites and is also sufficiently sensitive to detect gradients of PAH contamination. The method provides a rapid, inexpensive and non-destructive measure of biologically available PAH in crustaceans. 相似文献

The nonlinear propagation of Alfvén waves on open solar magnetic flux tubes is considered. The flux tubes are taken to be vertical and axisymmetric, and they are initially untwisted. The Alfvén waves are time-dependent axisymmetric twists. Their propagation into the chromosphere and corona is investigated by solving numerically a set of nonlinear time-dependent equations, which couple the Alfvén waves into motions parallel to the initial magnetic field (motion in the third coordinate direction is artificially suppressed). The principal conclusions are: (1) Alfvén waves can steepen into fast shocks in the chromosphere. These shocks can pass through the transition region into the corona, and heat the corona. (2) As the fast shocks pass through the transition region, they produce large-velocity pulses in the direction transverse to B
o. The pulses typically have amplitudes of 60 km s–1 or so and durations of a few tens of seconds. Such features may have been observed, suggesting that the corona is in fact heated by fast shocks. (3) Alfvén waves exhibit a strong tendency to drive upward flows, with many of the properties of spicules. Spicules, and the observed corrugated nature of the transition region, may therefore be by-products of magnetic heating of the corona. (4) It is qualitatively suggested that Alfvén waves may heat the upper chromosphere indirectly by exerting time-dependent forces on the plasma, rather than by directly depositing heat into the plasma. 相似文献

Beach based and in-situ observations of plunging and spilling breakers, with associated localised wind data, have isolated important characteristics regarding breaking waves in the surf zone. Offshore winds enhance the development of plunging breakers; onshore winds, the development of spilling breakers. In the decades since dramatic reductions in acid emissions and subsequent deposition in North America and Europe, the vast majority of research on aquatic chemical recovery has focused on trends in acid–base concentrations during baseflow conditions. Missing from such assessments is consideration of higher flow periods, when flow paths and chemical concentrations change and episodic acidification may occur. Stream samples collected weekly and bi‐hourly during high‐flow storm events from 1992 to 2015 at three watersheds representing a gradient in response to acid deposition in the south‐eastern United States were used to evaluate temporal trends in acid anions, base cations, acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), and pH for each of five distinct flow exceedance regimes, as well as trends in concentration–discharge (C–Q) relationships. For the most well‐buffered watershed (mean ANC = 220 μeq L?1), ANC and pH increased at a similar rate for baseflow and storm flow conditions. Decreases in sulfate controlled ANC trends at higher flows, whereas smaller sulfate decreases in combination with base cation increases resulted in similar ANC improvements for low‐flow periods. For the most acid sensitive watershed (mean ANC = 10 μeq L?1), no trends in ANC or pH were observed for the lowest flows (>90% flow exceedance), whereas reductions in sulfate resulted in significant increases in ANC during higher flow conditions. At all sites, greater rates of sulfate decline during high‐flow, as compared with low‐flow, conditions are likely a result of a reduced capacity of near surface soils to adsorb and retain sulfur in these non‐glaciated watersheds. Overall, consistent increases in pH (~0.01–0.02 pH units year?1) during higher flow conditions (<10% flow exceedance) in contrast to the variable trends observed during lower flows (>50% flow exceedance) illustrate that episodic acidification is recovering at an equal or greater rate than chronic acidification in these watersheds. 相似文献

Precision measurements of neutron star radii can provide a powerful probe of the properties of cold matter beyond nuclear density. Beginning in the late 1970s, it was proposed that the radius could be obtained from the apparent or inferred emitting area during the decay portions of thermonuclear (type I) X-ray bursts. However, this apparent area is generally not constant, preventing a reliable measurement of the source radius. Here, we report for the first time a correlation between the variation of the inferred area and the burst properties, measured in a sample of almost 900 bursts from 43 sources. We found that the rate of change of the inferred area during decay is anticorrelated with the burst decay duration. A Spearman rank correlation test shows that this relation is significant at the <10−45 level for our entire sample, and at the 7 × 10−37 level for the 625 bursts without photospheric radius expansion. This anticorrelation is also highly significant for individual sources exhibiting a wide range of burst durations, such as 4U 1636–536 and Aql X-1. We suggest that variations in the colour factor, which relates the colour temperature resulted from the scattering in the neutron star atmosphere to the effective temperature of the burning layer, may explain the correlation. The coastal area investigated of southern California is adjacent to a densely populated, highly industrialized area that injects about 4 × 109l per day of wastewater into the adjacent coastal ocean. The wastewater contains large amounts of Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Ni, Ag and Zn, primarily associated with the solids, which produce trace metal concentrations in the wastewater praticulates of two to three orders of magnitude greater than the natural marine sediment. The injection of this solid waste into the ocean causes large areas (on the order of 130 km2) of the marine sediment adjacent to the outfall systems to become heavily contaminated with trace metals.Less than 10% of the metals injected from the outfall are present in the contaminated marine sediment of the study area. The remaining 90% are either dissolved out of the waste solids suspended in seawater or transported out of the area by currents while still associated with the particulate matter.The effect on the global geochemical system due to wastewater discharge is not as extensive as on a local scale but is perhaps more important. The ocean injection of metals in municipal wastewater by man is now of the same order of magnitude as the injection of the metals by natural weathering. The global consequences of this are unknown; however while the natural rate of trace metal injection is constant, the anthropogenic contribution will increase with time. 相似文献

Geochemical analysis of sediment samples can be used to characterize between- and within-lake variability and provide insights into lake chemistry, depositional processes and contamination sources. The number of samples for geochemical studies is restricted by cost, sample volume required, and the destructive nature of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, instrumental neutron activation analysis, or wavelength dispersive x-ray fluorescence. Core scanners that incorporate energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, such as the Cox Itrax-XRF core scanner, have high through-put and can be used to produce high-quality geochemical datasets at low cost without destroying sample material.
