On the Statistics of Wind Gusts

Wind measurementsnear the North Seaborder of Northern Germany andvelocity measurements under localisotropic conditions of a turbulent wakebehind a cylinder are compared. It is shownthat wind gusts, measured by means ofvelocity increments, do show similar statisticsto the laboratory data if they are conditionedon an averaged wind speed value.Clear differences between the laboratory dataand the atmospheric measurements arefound for the waiting time statistics betweensuccessive gusts above acertain threshold.

Effect of compacton on chemistry of solutions expelled from montmorillonite clay saturated in sea water

The total mineralization of solutions squeezed out of montmorillonite clay saturated in sea water was determined at different overburden pressures. The subsequent fractions of expelled solutions were also analysed for various anions (Cl^?, SO^2-₄, HCO^?₃, F^?) and cations (Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, B³⁺). The results indicate that the concentrations of squeezed-out solutions during the initial stages of compaction (at pressures up to 35 kg/cm²) are slightly higher than that of interstitial solution present initially. The concentration of squeezed-out solution goes through a maximum, or at least remains constant, before starting to decrease with increasing overburden pressure.     

Diurnal and subdiurnal luni-solar nutations: comparisons and effects

We present a comparison of the diurnal and subdiurnal terms of the three last theories of rigid Earth's rotation: SMART97, RDAN97 and REN 2000. For a better interpretation of the observations, we characterize their contribution to the polar motion and we estimate the non-rigid effects, which are at the level of a few microarcseconds.

Elastic thickness estimates at northeast passive margin of North America and its implications

Global estimates of the elastic thickness (Te) of the structure of passive continental margins show wide and varying results owing to the use of different methodologies. Earlier estimates of the elastic thickness of the North Atlantic passive continental margins that used flexural modelling yielded a Te value of ~20–100 km. Here, we compare these estimates with the Te value obtained using orthonormalized Hermite multitaper recovered isostatic coherence functions. We discuss how Te is correlated with heat flow distribution and depth of necking. The E–W segment in the southern study region comprising Nova Scotia and the Southern Grand Banks show low Te values, while the zones comprising the NE–SW zones, viz., Western Greenland, Labrador, Orphan Basin and the Northern Grand Bank show comparatively high Te values. As expected, Te broadly reflects the depth of the 200–400°C isotherm below the weak surface sediment layer at the time of loading, and at the margins most of the loading occurred during rifting. We infer that these low Te measurements indicate Te frozen into the lithosphere. This could be due to the passive nature of the margin when the loads were emplaced during the continental break-up process at high temperature gradients.
