Color variations of the four Galilean satellites have been monitored during the summer of 1971 with the McDonald Observatory area-scanning photometer. All were found to vary with orbital phase, with the exception of Europa in B-V. The curves suggest complex variations in surface make-up with some large features, possibly the result of interaction with the Jovian environment.  相似文献

The depletion of an initially uniform distribution of asteroids extending form Mars to Saturn, caused by the gravitational perturbations of Jupiter and Saturn, is calculated by numerical integration of the asteroid orbits. Almost all (about 85%) the asteroids between Jupiter and Saturn are ejected in the first 6000 years Most of the asteroids between the 23 Jupiter resonance (4.0 A.U.) and Jupiter are ejected in the first 2400 years with the exception of the stable librators (e.g., the Hilda group). Interior to the 23 resonance the depletion was small, and interior to the 12 resonance (3.3 A.U.) no asteroids were ejected in the first 2400 years.  相似文献

While the physical forcing mechanisms that govern the outflows of major rivers throughout the world are well documented in the literature, comparably less research has been done to examine the mechanisms that govern the contributions of small rivers and streams to coastal ocean systems. These rivers and streams provide a direct means for the transport of anthropogenic and terrigenous materials from watersheds to coastal oceans. This study describes the temporal and spatial variability of freshwater plumes from Kaneohe Stream, Hawaii, USA, after storm events in the Kaneohe Bay watershed. Freshwater plumes were examined using a combination of fixed moorings, synoptic shipboard surveys, and lagrangian surface drifters. Data sets were collected over the course of 19 months from August 2005 to March 2007 with particular attention paid to storms during the boreal winters. Stream discharge and duration were found to exert a primary control on plume persistence in the southern Kaneohe Bay system. Time series data show a strong coherence between wind forcing and surface currents, which, in combination with data derived from shipboard and aerial surveys, indicate that the spatial variability of freshwater plumes is primarily determined by atmospheric forcing.  相似文献

Information regarding climatic conditions during plant growth is preserved by the oxygen-isotope composition of biogenic silica (phytoliths) deposited in grasses. The O-isotope compositions of phytoliths and the plant water from which they precipitate are dependent on soil-water δ18O values, relative humidity, evapotranspiration rates, and temperature. Plant water and phytoliths from two grass species, Ammophila breviligulata (C3) and Calamovilfa longifolia (C4) at Pinery Provincial Park in southwestern Ontario, Canada, were examined to determine the variability in their δ18O values. Stem water was unfractionated from soil-water in oxygen isotopic composition and the δ18O values of stem silica provide a good proxy for the soil water available to roots during the growing season. Greater spatial and temporal variation in the δ18O values of water in the top 5 cm of the soil, and their enhanced sensitivity to evaporative 18O enrichment, are reflected in the generally higher δ18O values of water in the shallow roots and rhizomes of these grasses. Water within the sheath and lower and upper leaf tissues experiences continual evaporation, becoming progressively enriched in 18O as it moves towards the tip of the leaf. However, the water from which leaf silica precipitates has not acquired the extreme 18O enrichment predicted using steady-state models, or measured for midday or average daily leaf water. Possible explanations for this behaviour include preferential deposition of silica at night; the existence of a secluded water fraction within the leaf, which experiences smaller diurnal variations in isotopic composition than leaf water at sites of evaporation; kinetic isotope effects during rapid precipitation of leaf silica; and incomplete exchange between the oxygen in the silicic acid and the leaf water.  相似文献

The esterification of two model vertebrate steroid hormones – estradiol (E2) and dehidroepiandrosterone (DHEA) – was studied in the oyster Crassostrea virginica. The activity of acyl-CoA:steroid acyltransferase was characterized in microsomal fractions isolated from oyster digestive glands. The apparent Km and Vmax values changed with the fatty acid acyl-CoA used (C20:4, C18:2, C18:1, C16:1, C18:0 or C16:0), and were in the range of 9–17 μM, and 35–74 pmol/min/mg protein for E2, and in the range of 45–120 μM, and 30–182 pmol/min/mg protein for DHEA. Kinetic parameters were also assessed in gonadal tissue. The enzyme saturated at similar concentrations, although conjugation rates were lower than in digestive gland. Preliminary data shows that tributyltin (TBT) in the low μM range (1–50) strongly inhibits E2 and DHEA esterification, the esterification of E2 being more sensitive to inhibition than that of DHEA. Overall, results indicate that apolar conjugation occurs in oysters, in both digestive gland and gonads, at a very similar rate to mammals, suggesting that this is a well conserved conjugation pathway during evolution. Esterification, together with other mechanisms, can modulate endogenous steroid levels in C. virginica, and might be a target for endocrine disrupters, such as TBT.  相似文献
