Abstract— Detailed numerical models have shown that solar nebula shock waves would be able to thermally process chondrules in a way that is consistent with experimental constraints. However, it has recently been argued that the high relative velocities that would be generated between chondrules of different sizes immediately behind the shock front would lead to energetic collisions that would destroy the chondrules as they were processed rather than preserving them for incorporation into meteorite parent bodies. Here the outcome of these collisions is quantitatively explored using a simple analytic expression for the viscous dissipation of collisional energy in a liquid layer. It is shown that molten chondrules can survive collisions at velocities as high as a few hundred meters per second. It is also shown that the thermal evolution of chondrules in a given shock wave varies with chondrule size, which may allow chondrules of different textures to form in a given shock wave. While experiments are needed to further constrain the parameters used in this work, these calculations show that the expected outcomes from collisions behind shock waves are consistent with what is observed in meteorites.  相似文献

Twelve modified passive capillary samplers (M‐PCAPS) were installed in remote locations within a large, alpine watershed located in the southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado to collect samples of infiltration during the snowmelt and summer rainfall seasons. These samples were collected in order to provide better constraints on the isotopic composition of soil‐water endmembers in the watershed. The seasonally integrated stable isotope composition (δ18O and δ2H) of soil‐meltwater collected with M‐PCAPS installed at shallow soil depths < 10 cm was similar to the seasonally integrated isotopic composition of bulk snow taken at the soil surface. However, meltwater which infiltrated to depths > 20 cm evolved along an isotopic enrichment line similar to the trendline described by the evolution of fresh snow to surface runoff from snowmelt in the watershed. Coincident changes in geochemistry were also observed at depth suggesting that the isotopic and geochemical composition of deep infiltration may be very different from that obtained by surface and/or shallow‐subsurface measurements. The M‐PCAPS design was also used to estimate downward fluxes of meltwater during the snowmelt season. Shallow and deep infiltration averaged 8·4 and 4·7 cm of event water or 54 and 33% of the measured snow water equivalent (SWE), respectively. Finally, dominant shallow‐subsurface runoff processes occurring during snowmelt could be identified using geochemical data obtained with the M‐PCAPS design. One soil regime was dominated by a combination of slow matrix flow in the shallow soil profile and fast preferential flow at depth through a layer of platy, volcanic rocks. The other soil regime lacked the rock layer and was dominated by slow matrix flow. Based on these results, the M‐PCAPS design appears to be a useful, robust methodology to quantify soil‐water fluxes during the snowmelt season and to sample the stable isotopic and geochemical composition of soil‐meltwater endmembers in remote watersheds. A sequence of digitized observations on short-normal resistivity determinations seems to show trend from higher to lower values. An appropriate statistical model proves it to have less range than expected on the distribution of its successive increments. On a two-tailed statistical procedure for testing deviations from a random walk, the series tends towards 'stasis' rather than trend. Most respondents anticipated Future earthquakes and expected damage from future tremors, findings which generally differ from previous research. We have grouped observed type III solar bursts according to the discrete frequencies of observation in the kilometric wavelength range. For each group we have obtained the bursts' frequency of occurrence as a function of the heliographic longitude of the associated optical flares. We found that flares occurring east of a certain cutoff longitude do not produce bursts observable near the earth below a given frequency. The cutoff on the west is determined by observational limitation for flares beyond the limb. The mean longitude and the extreme eastern end of the longitude distribution both shift to the west as the radio frequency decreases. We interpret these findings in terms of radio wave propagation effects and curved trajectories of the bursts' exciter particles.  相似文献

A thorough search covering more than 3 years shows that nearly 300 observable mutual eclipses and occultations of the Galilean satellites occur between May 1985 and April 1986, marking this apparition as a very favorable one. This paper tabulates quantities needed to obtain light curves of all events, excluding only those taking place either too close to Jupiter or with the planet too near the Sun. Since observations are relatively short and easy to incorporate into photometric programs, we urge an active campaign so as to provide the accurate astrometric data required to improve ephemerides (which are of immediate interest to the Galileo mission to Jupiter) and to look for tidal effects in the motion of Io.  相似文献

An array of MAPCO2 buoys, CRIMP-2, Ala Wai, and Kilo Nalu, deployed in the coastal waters of Hawaii, have produced multi-year high temporal resolution CO2 records in three different coral reef environments off the island of Oahu, Hawaii. This study, which includes data from June 2008 to December 2011, is part of an integrated effort to understand the factors that influence the dynamics of CO2–carbonic acid system parameters in waters surrounding Pacific high-island coral reef ecosystems and subject to differing natural and anthropogenic stresses. The MAPCO2 buoys are located on the Kaneohe Bay backreef, and fringing reef sites on the south shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The buoys measure CO2 and O2 in seawater and in the atmosphere at 3-h intervals, as well as other physical and biogeochemical parameters (conductivity, temperature, depth, chlorophyll-a, and turbidity). The buoy records, combined with data from synoptic spatial sampling, have allowed us to examine the interplay between biological cycles of productivity/respiration and calcification/dissolution and biogeochemical and physical forcings on hourly to inter-annual time scales. Air–sea CO2 gas exchange was also calculated to determine whether the locations were sources or sinks of CO2 over seasonal, annual, and interannual time periods. Net annualized fluxes for CRIMP-2, Ala Wai, and Kilo Nalu over the entire study period were 1.15, 0.045, and ?0.0056 mol C m?2 year?1, respectively, where positive values indicate a source or a CO2 flux from the water to the atmosphere, and negative values indicate a sink or flux of CO2 from the atmosphere into the water. These values are of similar magnitude to previous estimates in Kaneohe Bay as well as those reported from other tropical reef environments. Total alkalinity (AT) was measured in conjunction with pCO2, and the carbonic acid system was calculated to compare with other reef systems and open ocean values around Hawaii. These findings emphasize the need for high-resolution data of multiple parameters when attempting to characterize the carbonic acid system in locations of highly variable physical, chemical, and biological parameters (e.g., coastal systems and reefs).  相似文献

We describe and analyze the results of the third global energy and water cycle experiment atmospheric boundary layer Study intercomparison and evaluation study for single-column models. Each of the nineteen participating models was operated with its own physics package, including land-surface, radiation and turbulent mixing schemes, for a full diurnal cycle selected from the Cabauw observatory archive. By carefully prescribing the temporal evolution of the forcings on the vertical column, the models could be evaluated against observations. We focus on the gross features of the stable boundary layer (SBL), such as the onset of evening momentum decoupling, the 2-m minimum temperature, the evolution of the inertial oscillation and the morning transition. New process diagrams are introduced to interpret the variety of model results and the relative importance of processes in the SBL; the diagrams include the results of a number of sensitivity runs performed with one of the models. The models are characterized in terms of thermal coupling to the soil, longwave radiation and turbulent mixing. It is shown that differences in longwave radiation schemes among the models have only a small effect on the simulations; however, there are significant variations in downward radiation due to different boundary-layer profiles of temperature and humidity. The differences in modelled thermal coupling to the land surface are large and explain most of the variations in 2-m air temperature and longwave incoming radiation among models. Models with strong turbulent mixing overestimate the boundary-layer height, underestimate the wind speed at 200 m, and give a relatively large downward sensible heat flux. The result is that 2-m air temperature is relatively insensitive to turbulent mixing intensity. Evening transition times spread 1.5 h around the observed time of transition, with later transitions for models with coarse resolution. Time of onset in the morning transition spreads 2 h around the observed transition time. With this case, the morning transition appeared to be difficult to study, no relation could be found between the studied processes, and the variation in the time of the morning transition among the models.  相似文献

Atlantic and Pacific El Niño are the leading tropical oceanic variability phenomena at interannual timescales. Recent studies have demonstrated how the Atlantic Niño is able to influence on the dynamical processes triggering the development of the Pacific La Niña and vice versa. However, the stationarity of this interbasin connection is still controversial. Here we show for the first time that the Atlantic–Pacific Niños connection takes place at particular decades, coinciding with negative phases of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). During these decades, the Atlantic–Pacific connection appears as the leading coupled covariability mode between Tropical Atlantic and Pacific interannual variability. The mode is defined by a predictor field, the summer Atlantic Sea Surface Temperature (SST), and a set of predictand fields which represent a chain of atmospheric and oceanic mechanisms to generate the Pacific El Niño phenomenon: alteration of the Walker circulation, surface winds in western Pacific, oceanic Kelvin wave propagating eastward and impacting on the eastern thermocline and changes in the Pacific SST by internal Bjerknes feedback. We suggest that the multidecadal component of the Atlantic acts as a switch for El Niño prediction during certain decades, putting forward the AMO as the modulator, acting through changes in the equatorial Atlantic convection and the equatorial Pacific SST variability. These results could have a major relevance for the decadal prediction systems.  相似文献
