The Danish Straits are part of the transition area between the North Sea and the central Baltic Sea. More precisely, the Danish Straits connect Kattegat to the Arkona Basin and includes the relatively narrow and shallow sub-areas: Great Belt, Little Belt, Fehmarn Belt and Sound. The flow resistances in the straits are hydraulically determined by among other factors, the contractions, sills and stratification found in the straits. Close to the entrance to the Arkona Basin the Darss and Drogden Sills are located that trap inflowing dense water partially before it enters the central Baltic Sea. Hence, the resistances in the Danish Straits are of crucial importance for the stratification and ecosystems in the central Baltic Sea. The present work comprises calculations of flow resistance in the Great Belt based on measurements collected as part of the Great Belt Fixed Link investigations. The specific resistance in the Great Belt is determined to be an average of 41.2 × 10−12 s2 m−5, but it depends heavily on the interface position. When calculating long-term discharge time-series on the basis of the momentum equation it is advised to apply a seasonal varying resistance. 相似文献

Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) spawning and larval environment in a Florida Current frontal eddy

Fronts and eddies are widely hypothesized to be critical spawning habitat for large pelagic fishes, due to increased larval and/or adult feeding opportunities at these features. We examined sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) spawning around a cyclonic, submesoscale (∼13 × 7 km) Florida Current frontal eddy. The temporal progression of eddy dynamics over a 65 h period was determined using ocean color satellite imagery, continuous surface measurements along the cruise track, and non-linear least-squares fitting of the positions of three drifters deployed within the eddy. A peak in larval sailfish densities (n = 2435, stations = 49), composed primarily of yolk-sac and first-feeding larvae, occurred at the eddy frontal zone. A majority of these larvae were estimated to have been spawned during the formation of the eddy. A comparison between the distribution of similar-age sailfish and scombrid larvae indicated that the peak in larval sailfish density likely resulted from spawning directly at the front, rather than transport by convergent flow. The first-feeding prey items of larval sailfish (Farranula and Corycaeus copepods) were most abundant at the frontal zone and to a lesser extent inside the eddy. Egg distributions were used to indirectly assess the distribution of adult sailfish prey items. Euthynnus alleteratus and Auxis spp. eggs were in highest abundance outside the eddy, while the eggs of small carangids were in highest abundance at the eddy frontal zone. Overall, this study indicates that sailfish spawn at small-scale oceanographic features that provide a favorable feeding environment for their larvae and potentially also for the adults. 相似文献

The CO2 exchange characteristics and chlorophyll content of the pneumatophores of Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. var. resinifera (Forst.) Bakh. were examined. The results indicate that, in addition to their primary role in ventilation of the buried roots, the aerial roots have the ability to fix exogenous CO2 via photosynthesis. Consequently, during the day these organs are almost auto trophic in terms of carbon balance. When corrected for the respiration of non‐chlorophyllous tissue, they show photosynthetic rates comparable to those of many other woody plants. 相似文献

The prediction of large-scale coastal and estuarine morphodynamics requires a sound understanding of the relevant driving processes and forcing factors. Data- and process-based methods and models suffer from limitations when applied individually to investigate these systems and, therefore, a combined approach is needed. The morphodynamics of coastal environments can be assessed in terms of a mean bed elevation range (BER), which is the difference of the lowest to highest seabed elevation occurring within a defined time interval. In this study of the coastal sector of the German Bight, North Sea, the highly variable distribution of observed BER for the period 1984–2006 is correlated to local bed shear stresses based on hindcast simulations with a well-validated high-resolution (typically 1,000 m in coastal settings) process-based numerical model of the North Sea. A significant correlation of the 95th percentile of bed shear stress and BER was found, explaining between 49 % and 60 % of the observed variance of the BER under realistic forcing conditions. The model then was applied to differentiate the effects of three main hydrodynamic drivers, i.e. tides, wind-induced currents, and waves. Large-scale mapping of these model results quantify previous qualitative suggestions: tides act as main drivers of the East Frisian coast, whereas waves are more relevant for the morphodynamics of the German west coast. Tidal currents are the main driver of the very high morphological activity of the tidal channels of the Ems, Weser and Elbe estuaries, the Jade Bay, and tidal inlets between the islands. This also holds for the backbarrier tidal flats of the North Frisian Wadden Sea. The morphodynamics of the foreshore areas of the barrier island systems are mainly wave-driven; in the deeper areas tides, waves and wind-driven currents have a combined effect. The open tidal flats (outer Ems, Neuwerker Watt, Dithmarschen Bight) are affected by a combination of tides, wind-driven currents and waves. The environment in which we live greatly influences our health. One particular factor that has been related to morbidity and mortality is dwelling crowding. A range of mechanisms have been proposed as links between dwelling crowding and disease, including increased exposures to allergens, respiratory irritants and infectious agents in crowded dwellings. While studies of dwelling crowding have been conducted in many locations around the world, this factor has received little attention in Australian health studies. We examine relationships between dwelling crowding and health in Sydney, using three case studies at the local government area (LGA) level within the Sydney Statistical Division. Dwelling and demographic data from the 1996 Australian census are used, along with four socio-economic indexes produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and hospital inpatient data for the period 1 July 1994 to 30 June 1997 as the health indicator. Results suggest that dwelling crowding is a significant factor in certain diseases in Sydney. Asthma hospital separations are not correlated with dwelling crowding, although multiple linear regression analysis produces three models which include crowding and three of the socio-economic indexes as significant variables. Separations for bronchitis and emphysema, and all causes combined, are positively correlated with dwelling crowding. A small particle (ca. 10?6 g) was magnetically separated from a Ca,Al-rich inclusion of the Allende meteorite. By using instrumental neutron activation analysis it was found that the elements Os, W, Re, Ir, Mo, Ru and Pt were enriched by a mean factor of about 7000 relative to Cl chondrites.A polished section of the grain showed that it consisted mainly of silicates, with a rounded particle of metal and sulfide (20 μm across) attached to it.Concentrations of up to 11% Pt were determined with the microprobe in the Ni-Fe center of the particle. Furthermore, Rh was for the first time measured in an Allende inclusion. It is enriched in about the same degree as Pt, Ir and W. The Ni-Fe center was surrounded by troilite. Mo was concentrated in the sulfide, while Os and Ru were inhomogeneously distributed over the metal + sulfide phases. The particle is interpreted as direct product of metal condensation of the solar nebula. The sulfide phase formed at lower temperatures and caused redistribution of the refractory siderophile elements. Condensation calculations for a metal alloy show that Fe and Ni are expected to be already present at higher temperatures than the condensation temperatures of pure Fe. Pt and Rh, having lower condensation temperatures than pure Fe should also be completely condensed above the condensation temperature of pure Fe. Kinetic considerations show that minimum times to grow this kind of particle should be of the order of 500 years at 10?3 atm. 相似文献

A thermal model, consistent as far as possible with the parameterised earth model of Dziewonski et al. and with thermodynamic principles and relevant equations of state, is tabulated. This is made more secure by two recent developments, an experimental study of the FeS eutectic to 100 kbar by Usselman and a calculation by Bukowinski which reveals an electronic phase collapse of potassium in the 200–300 kbar range and explains the core heat source. Use is made of the Vashchenko-Zubarev formulation of the Grüneisen ratio, and Lindemann's melting law, both of which have been shown recently to have particular relevance at very high pressures. Values of electronic specific heat and the Grüneisen ratio, which contribute significantly to core properties are calculated from the electron equation of state of Zharkov and Kalinin. 相似文献
