Porphyry-type ore deposits sometimes contain fluid inclusion compositions consistent with the partitioning of copper and gold into vapor relative to coexisting brine at the depositional stage. However, this has not been reproduced experimentally at magmatic conditions. In an attempt to determine the conditions under which copper and gold may partition preferentially into vapor relative to brine at temperatures above the solidus of granitic magmas, we performed experiments at 800 °C, 100 MPa, oxygen fugacity () buffered by Ni-NiO, and fixed at either 3.5 × 10−2 by using intermediate solid solution-pyrrhotite, or 1.2 × 10−4 by using intermediate solid solution-pyrrhotite-bornite. The coexisting vapor (∼3 wt.% NaCl eq.) and brine (∼68 wt.% NaCl eq.) were composed initially of NaCl + KCl + HCl + H2O, with starting HCl set to <1000 μg/g in the aqueous mixture. Synthetic vapor and brine fluid inclusions were trapped at run conditions and subsequently analyzed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Our experiments demonstrate that copper and gold partitioned strongly into the magmatic volatile phase(s) (MVP) (i.e., vapor or brine) relative to a silicate melt over the entire imposed range of . Nernst style partition coefficients between coexisting brine (b) and melt (m), Db/m (±1σ), range from 3.6(±2.2) × 101 to 4(±2) × 102 for copper and from 1.2(±0.6) × 102 to 2.4(±2.4) × 103 for gold. Partition coefficients between coexisting vapor (v) and melt, Dv/m range from 2.1 ± 0.7 to 18 ± 5 and 7(±3) × 101 to 1.6(±1.6) × 102 for copper and gold, respectively. Partition coefficients for all experiments between coexisting brine and vapor, Db/v (±1σ), range from 7(±2) to 1.0(±0.4) × 102 and 1.7(±0.2) to 15(±2) for copper and gold, respectively. Observed average Db/v at an of 1.2 × 10−4 were elevated, 95(±5) and 15 ± 1 for copper and gold, respectively, relative to those at the higher of 3.5 × 10−2 where Db/v were 10(±5) for copper and 7(±6) for gold. Thus, there is an inverse relationship between the and the Db/v for both copper and gold with increasing resulting in a decrease in the Db/v signifying increased importance of the vapor phase for copper and gold transport. This suggests that copper and gold may complex with volatile S-species as well as Cl-species at magmatic conditions, however, none of the experiments of our study at 800 °C and 100 MPa had a Db/v ? 1. We did not directly determine speciation, but infer the existence of some metal-sulfur complexes based on the reported data. We suggest that copper and gold partition preferentially into the brine in most instances at or above the wet solidus. However, in most systems, the mass of vapor is greater than the mass of brine, and vapor transport of copper and gold may become more important in the magmatic environment at higher , lower , or near the critical point in a salt-water system. A Db/v ? 1 at subsolidus hydrothermal conditions may also occur in response to changes in temperature, , , and/or acidity.Additionally, both copper and gold were observed to partition into intermediate solid solution and bornite much more strongly than into vapor, brine or silicate melt. This suggests that, although vapor and brine are both efficient at removing copper and gold from a silicate melt, the presence of Cu-Fe sulfides can sequester a substantial portion of the copper and gold contained within a silicate melt if the Cu-Fe sulfides are abundant.  相似文献

A comprehensive hydrological modeling study in the drainage area of a hydropower reservoir in central Switzerland is presented. Two models were tested to reproduce the measured discharge dynamics: (1) a detailed energy-balance model (ALPINE3D) primarily designed for snow simulations; (2) a conceptual runoff model system (PREVAH), including a distributed temperature-index snow and ice melt model. Considerable effort was put into distributing available meteorological station data to the model grids as forcing data. The recent EU regional climate modeling initiative ENSEMBLES provided up-to-date climate predictions for two 30-a periods in mid and late 21st century. These were used to estimate evolutions in the water supply of the hydropower reservoir in response to expected climate changes. The simulations suggest a shift of spring peak-flow by almost two months for the end of the century. Warmer winter temperatures will cause higher winter base-flow. Due to glacier retreat, late-summer flow will decrease at the end of the century.  相似文献

Metamorphic basement rocks, that are exposed beneath the very low-grade to unmetamorphosed Upper Jurassic-Eocene formations north of the Torud fault zone within the Great Kavir Block, were investigated to elucidate the origin of their protoliths and the pressure and temperature conditions of metamorphism. The basement, previously assumed as a pre-Cambrian metamorphic complex, is mostly formed by amphibolite-facies orthogneisses (tonalite, granodiorite, and granite) with amphibolites and small amounts of metasediment-micaschists. Major- and trace-element geochemistry in combination with U–Pb age dating of zircon showed that the protoliths formed during Late Neoproterozoic continental arc magmatism that has also been identified in other tectonic blocks of Central Iran. In addition to quartz, feldspar(s), micas in orthogneisses, and amphibole + plagioclase in amphibolite, all rocks may contain garnet that shows prograde zoning. Kyanite was found only in some Al-rich amphibolite together with gedrite. The PT conditions of the rocks, based on conventional geothermobarometry and the pseudosection method, show a medium-pressure amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Ar–Ar age dating of muscovite reveals that this metamorphism occurred in the Middle Jurassic (166 Ma) and related to the closure of the Neotethyan basin.  相似文献

A new method is proposed to estimate future net basin supplies and lake levels for the Laurentian Great Lakes based on GCM projections of global climate change. The method first dynamically downscales the GCM simulation with a regional climate model, and then bias—corrects the simulated net basin supply in order to be used directly in a river—routing/lake level scheme. This technique addresses two weaknesses in the traditional approach, whereby observed sequences of climate variables are perturbed with fixed ratios or differences derived directly from GCMs in order to run evaporation and runoff models. Specifically, (1) land surface—atmosphere feedback processes are represented, and (2) changes in variability can be analyzed with the new approach. The method is demonstrated with a single, high resolution simulation, where small changes in future mean lake levels for all the upper Great Lakes are found, and an increase in seasonal range—especially for Lake Superior—is indicated. Analysis of a small ensemble of eight lower resolution regional climate model simulations supports these findings. In addition, a direct comparison with the traditional approach based on the same GCM projections used as the driving simulations in this ensemble shows that the new method indicates smaller declines in level for all the upper Great Lakes than has been reported previously based on the traditional method, though median differences are only a few centimetres in each case.  相似文献

Two modern machine learning techniques, Linear Programming Boosting (LPBoost) and Support Vector Machines (SVMs), are introduced and applied to a geochemical dataset of niobium–tantalum (“coltan”) ores from Central Africa to demonstrate how such information may be used to distinguish ore provenance, i.e., place of origin. The compositional data used include uni- and multivariate outliers and elemental distributions are not described by parametric frequency distribution functions. The “soft margin” techniques of LPBoost and SVMs can be applied to such data. Optimization of their learning parameters results in an average accuracy of up to c. 92%, if spot measurements are assessed to estimate the provenance of ore samples originating from two geographically defined source areas. A parameterized performance measure, together with common methods for its optimization, was evaluated to account for the presence of uneven datasets. Optimization of the classification function threshold improves the performance, as class importance is shifted towards one of those classes. For this dataset, the average performance of the SVMs is significantly better compared to that of LPBoost.  相似文献

In this article we discuss the importance of high‐resolution absorption spectroscopy for our understanding of the distribution and physical nature of the gaseous circumgalactic medium (CGM) that surrounds the Milky Way. Observational and theoretical studies indicate a high complexity of the gas kinematics and an extreme multi‐phase nature of the CGM in low‐redshift galaxies. High‐precision absorption‐line measurements of the Milky Way's gas environment thus are essential to explore fundamental parameters of circumgalactic gas in the local Universe, such as mass, chemical composition, and spatial distribution. We shortly review important characteristics of the Milky Way's CGM and discuss recent results from our multi‐wavelength observations of the Magellanic Stream. Finally, we discuss the potential of studying the warm‐hot phase of the Milky Way's CGM by searching for extremely weak [Fe X] λ 6374.5 Å and [Fe XIV] λ 5302.9 Å absorption in optical QSO spectra. Atom‐probe tomography (APT) is currently the only analytical technique that, due to its spatial resolution and detection efficiency, has the potential to measure the carbon isotope ratios of individual nanodiamonds. We describe three different sample preparation protocols that we developed for the APT analysis of meteoritic nanodiamonds at sub‐nm resolution and present carbon isotope peak ratios of meteoritic and synthetic nanodiamonds. The results demonstrate an instrumental bias associated with APT that needs to be quantified and corrected to obtain accurate isotope ratios. After this correction is applied, this technique should allow determination of the distribution of 12C/13C ratios in individual diamond grains, solving the decades‐old question of the origin of meteoritic nanodiamonds: what fraction, if any, formed in the solar system and in presolar environments? Furthermore, APT could help us identify the stellar sources of any presolar nanodiamonds that are detected.  相似文献

We use the halo occupation model to calibrate galaxy group finders in magnitude limited redshift surveys. Because, according to the current scenario of structure formation, galaxy groups are associated with cold dark matter (CDM) haloes, we make use of the properties of the halo population in the design of our group finder. The method starts with an assumed mass-to-light ratio to assign a tentative mass to each group. This mass is used to estimate the size and velocity dispersion of the underlying halo that hosts the group, which in turn is used to determine group membership (in redshift space). This procedure is repeated until no further changes occur in group memberships. We find that the final groups selected this way are insensitive to the mass-to-light ratio assumed. We use mock catalogues, constructed using the conditional luminosity function (CLF), to test the performance of our group finder in terms of completeness of true members and contamination by interlopers. Our group finder is more successful than the conventional friends-of-friends (FOF) group finder in assigning galaxies in common dark matter haloes to a single group. We apply our group finder to the 2-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and compare the resulting group properties with model predictions based on the CLF. For the ΛCDM concordance cosmology, we find a clear discrepancy between the model and data in the sense that the model predicts too many rich groups. In order to match the observational results, we have to either increase the mass-to-light ratios of rich clusters to a level significantly higher than current observational estimates, or to assume  σ8≃ 0.7  , compared with the concordance value of 0.9.  相似文献

Pollen diagrams from organic facies overlain by glacigenic sediments at Pen-y-bryn, North Wales (53°7′N, 4°16′W), suggest that it is the first locality in the British Isles to provide evidence for several Devensian interstadials prior to Devensian stadial glaciation(s). The evidence is not, however, unequivocal. At least two main episodes of organic sedimentation are indicated, separated by an interval of uncertain duration. One eposide records a Pinus-Picea-Betula forest. A second, possibly later, event, with tree pollen less than 10% of total land pollen (TLP), suggests a cool, largely unforested environment. A third episode, with tree pollen up to 25% of TLP, may be related to the latter or be of intermediate age, whereas a fourth and later episode of organic accumulation may be of reworked material. Radiocarbon dating of organic deposits and of a wood macrofossil enclosed in basal till is inconclusive, as is preliminary uranium-series dating. The principal biogenic episodes may correlate with Oxygen Isotope Substages 5c and 5a, but as the pollen records reflect facies floras, the correlation remains tentative; it is also possible that other temperate periods are recorded. Further resolution of the chronostratigraphy is required to help clarify the problematic correlation of interstadial and stadial events in northwest Europe and to correlate more accurately the biogenic and glacigenic facies at Pen-y-bryn with their Pleistocene equivalents elsewhere.  相似文献

We use the extended Press–Schechter formalism to investigate the rate at which cold dark matter haloes accrete mass. We discuss the shortcomings of previous methods that have been used to compute the mass accretion histories of dark matter haloes, and present an improved method based on the N -branch merger tree algorithm of Somerville & Kolatt. We show that this method no longer suffers from inconsistencies in halo formation times, and compare its predictions with high-resolution N -body simulations. Although the overall agreement is reasonable, there are slight inconsistencies which are most easily interpreted as a reflection of ellipsoidal collapse (as opposed to spherical collapse assumed in the Press–Schechter formalism). We show that the average mass accretion histories follow a simple, universal profile, and we present a simple recipe for computing the two scale-parameters which is applicable to a wide range of halo masses and cosmologies. Together with the universal profiles for the density and angular momentum distributions of cold dark matter haloes, these universal mass accretion histories provide a simple but accurate framework for modelling the structure and formation of dark matter haloes. In particular, they can be used as a backbone for modelling various aspects of galaxy formation where one is not interested in the detailed effects of merging. As an example we use the universal mass accretion history to compute the rate at which dark matter haloes accrete mass, which we compare with the cosmic star formation history of the Universe.  相似文献
