The design of detector systems for flight applications requires the consideration of a number of issues unique to space instrumentation. Flight detectors must endure hostile radiation environments and thermal extremes. Paramount importance is given to reliability since inflight replacement is at best difficult and usually impossible. Flight detectors are also significant cost and design drivers since they often determine key requirements for flight instruments such as volume, mass, power consumption, heat dissipation and communications budgets. In this paper we describe the primary concerns in developing flight detector systems, and review the challenges posed by future NASA and ESA space science missions for detector development. 相似文献

A validation experiment, carried out in a scaled field setting, was attempted for the long electrode electrical resistivity tomography method in order to demonstrate the performance of the technique in imaging a simple buried target. The experiment was an approximately 1/17 scale mock‐up of a region encompassing a buried nuclear waste tank on the Hanford site. The target of focus was constructed by manually forming a simulated plume within the vadose zone using a tank waste simulant. The long electrode results were compared to results from conventional point electrodes on the surface and buried within the survey domain. Using a pole‐pole array, both point and long electrode imaging techniques identified the lateral extents of the pre‐formed plume with reasonable fidelity but the long electrode method was handicapped in reconstructing vertical boundaries. The pole‐dipole and dipole‐dipole arrays were also tested with the long electrode method and were shown to have the least favourable target properties, including the position of the reconstructed plume relative to the known plume and the intensity of false positive targets. The poor performance of the pole‐dipole and dipole‐dipole arrays was attributed to an inexhaustive and non‐optimal coverage of data at key electrodes, as well as an increased noise for electrode combinations with high geometric factors. However, when comparing the model resolution matrix among the different acquisition strategies, the pole‐dipole and dipole‐dipole arrays using long electrodes were shown to have significantly higher average and maximum values within the matrix than any pole‐pole array. The model resolution describes how well the inversion model resolves the subsurface. Given the model resolution performance of the pole‐dipole and dipole‐dipole arrays, it may be worth investing in tools to understand the optimum subset of randomly distributed electrode pairs to produce maximum performance from the inversion model. 相似文献

Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reduce pH of marine waters due to the absorption of atmospheric CO2 and formation of carbonic acid. Estuarine waters are more susceptible to acidification because they are subject to multiple
acid sources and are less buffered than marine waters. Consequently, estuarine shell forming species may experience acidification
sooner than marine species although the tolerance of estuarine calcifiers to pH changes is poorly understood. We analyzed
23 years of Chesapeake Bay water quality monitoring data and found that daytime average pH significantly decreased across
polyhaline waters although pH has not significantly changed across mesohaline waters. In some tributaries that once supported
large oyster populations, pH is increasing. Current average conditions within some tributaries however correspond to values
that we found in laboratory studies to reduce oyster biocalcification rates or resulted in net shell dissolution. Calcification
rates of juvenile eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica, were measured in laboratory studies in a three-way factorial design with 3 pH levels, two salinities, and two temperatures.
Biocalcification declined significantly with a reduction of ∼0.5 pH units and higher temperature and salinity mitigated the

A trawl-resistant bottom mount (TRBM) has been developed to meet the needs of long-term deployment of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) and Wave-Tide Gauges in water depths up to 300 m. This paper describes the unit's construction and operation together with practical lessons learned during development, testing, and use that can be applied to comparable platforms. The Barny Sentinel is derived from a larger version developed several years ago at SACLANT Center, now extensively redesigned to incorporate an RDI Sentinel ADCP and a Sea-Bird Wave-Tide Gauge. A concrete ring surrounding the fiberglass instrument housing serves as ballast and impact protection. Two independent recovery modes may be activated by acoustic commands, one of which can operate whether or not the platform is upright. Features have also been included to facilitate recovery by remotely operated underwater vehicle. A sending unit, temporarily attached during launch, provides real time information on platform depth and tilt, and confirms that the platform is properly positioned on the bottom before a launch commitment is made. A series of tests and applications have validated all basic functions and trawl resistance.
