Antithetic faults are dip slip faults that displace rocks so as to prevent or reduce structural relief, typically producing tilted fault blocks. They may or may not occur in conjugate systems with their opposites, homothetic faults, which serve to increase structural relief. Several examples serve to illustrate the concept and to correct current misunderstandings.
Zusammenfassung Die Arbeit soll die Begriffe antithetisch und homothetisch klären helfen. Antithetische Verschiebungen wirken dem tektonischen Relief entgegen, homothetische Verwerfungen unterstützen es. Die Begriffe werden an einigen Beispielen erläutert.

Résumé Ce travail constitue une tentative d'élucider les termes »antithétique« et »homothétique«. Le rejet des failles antithétiques s'oppose à la création d'un relief tectonique. Le rejet des failles homothétiques augmente ce relief. Quelques exemples sont discutés.

Atmospheric effects in the remote sensing of phytoplankton pigments   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
We investigate the accuracy with which relevant atmospheric parameters must be estimated to derive phytoplankton pigment concentrations (chlorophyll a plus phaeophytin a ) of a given accuracy from measurements of the ocean's apparent spectral radiance at satellite altitudes. The analysis is limited to an instrument having the characteristics of the Coastal Zone Color Scanner scheduled to orbit the Earth on NIMBUS-G. A phytoplankton pigment algorithm is developed which relates the pigment concentration (C) to the three ratios of upwelling radiance just beneath the sea surface which can be formed from the wavelengths () 440, 520 and 550 nm. The pigment algorithm explains from 94 to 98% of the variance in log10 C over three orders of magnitude in pigment concentration. This is combined with solutions to the radiative transfer equation to simulate the ocean's apparent spectral radiance at satellite altitudes as a function of C and the optical properties of the aerosol, the optical depth of which is assumed to be proportioned to -n . A specific atmospheric correction algorithm, based on the assumption that the ocean is totally absorbing at 670 nm, is then applied to the simulated spectral radiance, from which the pigment concentration is derived. Comparison between the true and derived values of C show that: (1) n is considerably more important than the actual aerosol optical thickness; (2) for C 0299-1 0.2 g l-1 acceptable concentrations can be determined as long as n is not overestimated; (3) as C increases, the accuracy with which n must be estimated, for a given relative accuracy in C, also increases; and (4) for C greater than about 0.5 g 1-1, the radiance at 440 nm becomes essentially useless in determining C. The computations also suggest that if separate pigment algorithms are used for C 1gl-1 and C 1 gl-1, accuracies considerably better than ±± in log C can be obtained for C 1 g l-1 with only a coarse estimate of n, while for C 10 gl-1, this accuracy can be achieved only with very good estimates of n.Contribution No. 387 from the NOAA/ERL Pacific Environmental Laboratory.On leave from Department of Physics, University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida.  相似文献

The thermodynamic properties of the lower mantle are determined from the seismic profile, where the primary thermodynamic variables are the bulk modulus K and density ρ. It is shown that the Bullen law (KP) holds in the lower mantle with a high correlation coefficient for the seismic parametric Earth model (PEM). Using this law produces no ambiguity or trade-off between ρ0 and K0, since both K0 and K0 are exactly determined by applying a linear K?ρ relationship to the data. On the other hand, extrapolating the velocity data to zero pressure using a Birch-Murnaghan equation of state (EOS) results in an ambiguous answer because there are three unknown adjustable parameters (ρ0, K0, K0) in the EOS.From the PEM data, K = 232.4 + 3.19 P (GPa). The PEM yields a hot uncompressed density of 3.999 ± 0.0026 g cm?3 for material decompressed from all parts of the lower mantle. Even if the hot uncompressed density were uniform for all depths in the lower mantle, the cold uncompressed mantle would be inhomogeneous because the decompression given by the Bullen law crosses isotherms; for example, the temperature is different at different depths. To calculate the density distribution correctly, an isothermal EOS must be used along an isotherm, and temperature corrections must be placed in the thermal pressure PTH.The thermodynamic parameters of the lower mantle are found by iteration. Values of the three uncompressed anharmonic parameters are first arbitrarily selected: α0 (hot), the coefficient of thermal expansion; γ0, the Grüneisen parameter; and δ, the second Grüneisen parameter. Using γ0 and the measured ρ0 (hot) and K0 (hot), the values of θ0 (Debye temperature) and q = dlnγ/dlnρ are found from the measured seismic velocities. Then from (αKT)0 and q the thermal pressure PTH at all high temperatures is found. Correlating PTH against T to the geotherm for the lower mantle, PTH is found at all depths Z. The isothermal pressure, along the 0 K isotherm, at every Z is found by subtracting PTH from the measured P given by the seismic model. Using the isothermal pressure at depth Z, the solution for the cold uncompressed density ρ0C and the cold uncompressed bulk modulus, KT0 is found as a trace in the KT0?ρ0C plane. A narrow band of solutions is then found for ρ0C and KT0 at all depths.The thermal expansion at all T is found from [ρ0C ? ρ0 (hot)/ρ0C. From Suzuki's formula, the best fit to the thermal expansion determines γ0 and α0 (hot). When the values of these two parameters do not agree with the original assumptions, the calculation is repeated until they do agree. In this way all the important thermodynamic parameters are found as a self-consistent set subject only to the assumptions behind the equations used.  相似文献

The salt marsh cord grass,Spartina alterniflora Loisel., occurs in markedly distinct short and tall growth forms. Both forms have the same number of chromosomes, although polyploidy is well established in the genus. Previous studies have shown that height is primarily affected by nitrate availability and environmental stresses such as increased soluble salt concentrations. These studies have shown that, within a marsh, height differences cannot be attributed to genetic, chromosomal differences or electrophoretic banding. However, more subtle genetic differences may be involved. Other studies suggest that between marshes,S. alterniflora, in response to a latitudinal gradient on the Atlantic coast, has evolved ecotypes differing in height, color and flowering period. This review paper points out that plant height inS. alterniflora may be determined by a combination of environmental and genetic factors.  相似文献

Marine mammals are probably frequently exposed to floating oil but little is known about the effect oil pollution has on them. Oil stranded on the shore in Pembrokeshire, West Wales in September 1974 coincided with the start of the Grey Seal breeding season there. Stress in the lithosphere: Inferences from steady state flow of rocks   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
Mechanical data and flow processes from steady state deformation experiments may be used to infer the state of stress in the lithosphere and asthenosphere. Extrapolations of flow equations to a representative geologic strain rate of 10–14/sec. for halite, marble, quartzite, dolomite, dunite and enstatolite are now warranted because the steady state flow processes in the experiments are identical to those in rocks and because the geotherms are reasonably well established. More direct estimates are obtained from free dislocation densities, subgrain sizes and recrystallized grain sizes all of which are functions only of stress. Using the last of these techniques, we have estimated stress profiles as a function of depth from xenoliths in basalts and kimberlites, whose depths of equilibration were determined by pyroxene techniques, from four different areas of subcontinental and suboceanic upper mantle. The results are similar and indicate stress differences of about 200 to 300 bars at 40 to 50 km, decaying to a few tens of bars at depths betow 100 km. These stresses are reasonable and are in accord with extrapolations of the mechanical data provided that allowance is made for a general increase in strain rate and decrease in viscosity with depth.  相似文献

Four sections of a Pb-210 dated core of 62 cm length from Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, were analyzed for fatty acids. A comparison of fatty acids extracted by Soxhlet extraction (unbound fatty acids) with fatty acids extracted by subsequent saponification extraction of the same sample (bound fatty acids) showed the former did not undergo diagenetic loss any faster than the latter. However, compositional differences between bound and unbound fatty acids were apparent in the top section of 1–2 cm and were less apparent in the 54–58 cm section. At least 14% of the bound fatty acids are esterified to non-solvent extractable material. The net conversion of fatty acids to other compounds is 32 μ/g dry weight sediment over the first 30 yr after deposition.  相似文献

The Firth of Forth, on the east coast of Scotland has hitherto received the untreated wastes of the city of Edinburgh. Some areas of the southern side of the Firth are heavily polluted in consequence. A new sewage treatment scheme will be introduced early in 1976 and a six-year monitoring programme is in progress to measure the efficiency of the new scheme. It is hoped that this work will eventually contribute to a better understanding of the influence of domestic and industrial sewage on the marine and estuarine environment.  相似文献

Observations are briefly discussed of an event in which microwave and hard X-ray emissions were not correlated in the accepted way. Two impulsive peaks of roughly equal intensity were observed at three different microwave frequencies. The hard X-ray peaks accompanying these, however, differ in intensity by almost two orders of magnitude. Various possible interpretations of this burst are discussed, in the context of familiar models of these emissions. The most likely explanation is that the electron spectrum in the first burst has a break at about 350 keV.
