The Apollo 16 soils have the largest low energy neutron fluences (up to 1017 n/cm2, E < 0.18eV) yet observed in lunar samples. Variations in the isotopic ratios 158Gd/157Gd and 150Sm/149Sm (up to 1.9% and 2.0% respectively) indicate that the low energy neutron fluence in the Apollo 16 drill stem increases with depth throughout the section sampled. Such a variation implies that accretion has been the dominant regolith “gardening” process at this location. The data may be fit by a model of continuous accretion of pre-irradiated material at a rate of ~70 g/(cm2 · 108yr) or by models involving as few as two slabs of material in which the first slab could have been deposited as long as 109 yr ago.The ratio of the number of neutrons captured per atom by Sm to the number captured per atom by Gd is lower than in previously measured lunar samples, which implies a lower energy neutron spectrum at this site. The variation of this ratio with chemical composition is qualitatively similar to that predicted by Lingenfelter, Canfield and Hampel.Variations are observed in the ratio 152Gd/160Gd which are fluence correlated and probably result from neutron capture by151Eu.  相似文献

δ18 O and δ13C of G.sacculifer have been measured in five cores from the northern Indian Ocean. In addition, high resolution analysis (1 to 2 cm) was performed on one core (SK-20-185) for both δ18O and gd13C in five species of planktonic foraminifera. CaCO3 variation was measured in two cores. The results, presented here, show that
–  • the summer monsoon was weaker during 18 ka and was stronger during 9 ka, relative to modern conditions;
–  • δ13C variations are consistent with independent evidence that shows that during the last glacial maximum (LGM; 18 ka) the upwelling was reduced while during 9 ka it was vigorous;
–  • calculation of CaCO3 flux shows that the LGM was characterized by low biogenic productivity in the Arabian Sea while during the Holocene productivity increased by ∼65%, as a direct consequence of the changes in upwelling. Similar changes (of lesser magnitude) are also seen in the equatorial Indian Ocean. The amount of terrigenous input into the Arabian Sea doubled during LGM possibly due to the higher erosion rate along the west coast.
–  • δ18O values indicate that the Arabian Sea was saltier by 1 to 2%o during LGM. The northern part was dominated by evaporation while in the equatorial part there was an increased precipitation.

Mollusk shells are increasingly used as records of past environmental conditions, particularly for sea-surface temperature (SST) reconstructions. Many recent studies tackled SST (and/or sea-surface salinity) tracers through variations in the elementary (Mg and Sr) or stable isotope (δ18O) composition within mollusk shells. But such attempts, which sometimes include calibration studies on modern specimens, are not always conclusive. We present here a series of Mg and Sr analyses in the calcitic layer of Concholepas concholepas (Muricidae, Gastropoda) with a very high time-resolution on a time window covering about 1 and a half month of shell formation, performed by Laser Ablation Inductively-Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA). The selected specimen of this common Chilean gastropod was grown under controlled environmental conditions and precise weekly time-marks were imprinted in the shell with calcein staining. Strontium variations in the shell are too limited to be interpreted in terms of environmental parameter changes. In contrast, Mg incorporation into the shell and growth rate appear to change systematically between night and day. During the day, Mg is incorporated at a higher rate than at night and this intake seems positively correlated with water temperature. The nightly reduced Mg incorporation is seemingly related to metabolically controlled processes, formation of organic-rich shell increments and nocturnal feeding activity of the animals. The nyctemeral Mg changes in the C. concholepas shell revealed in this study might explain at least part of the discrepancies observed in previous studies on the use of Mg as a SST proxy in mollusk shells. In the case of C. concholepas, Mg cannot be used straightforwardly as a SST proxy.  相似文献

The present study is based on a set of lavas and crosscutting dikes collected by dives along detailed vertical transects on the northern flank of the western part of the Blanco Transform Fault, Northeast Pacific. The studied area consists of a small basin, the Western Blanco Depression (WBD), extending from the southern end of the Juan de Fuca ridge to a pseudofault trace 60 km eastward. The Northern Scarp of the WBD comprises a volcanic unit overlying a sheeted-dike complex. Major and trace element data, coupled with Sr–Nd isotope ratios, reveal a two-component mantle source, composed by an isotopically depleted matrix variably veined by more enriched material. One chemical group (NS2), indistinguishable from the other Northern Scarp samples on the basis of trace element data, has an unusually depleted isotopic composition typical of a nearly pure mantle end-member. Some cogenetic samples of the Northern Scarp have been used to constrain the differentiation modalities. Anorthite and MgO content profiles in plagioclase xenocrysts and phenocrysts reveal (i) the existence of H2O-bearing evolved melts in the mushy zones and (ii) the occurrence of mixing process between these melts and anhydrous mafic liquids. The hydration is supported by other petrographic features such as high magmatic fO2 values, calculated from Fe–Ti oxide pairs, and the presence of pyroxene inclusions in plagioclase phenocrysts. Mixing, consistent with the existence of Ni-rich ferrobasalts, is interpreted to be the consequence of the reservoir refilling by mafic liquids (Mg# = 70). These petrological and geochemical evidences are combined with the evolution of Mg# with depth to suggest a periodic open-system magma chamber evolution beneath the southern end of the Juan de Fuca ridge.  相似文献

Suspended matter from the surface waters of the Amazon Estuary were collected during May and June 1976 on the ‘R/V Alpha Helix’, and their major-element compositions (Al, Si, Ti, K, Mg, Ca, P, Fe and Mn) were measured.Between salinities of 0 and 10%. the suspended material, predominantly terrigenous in derivation, decreases in load from 500 to 3 mg/l, but has a chemical composition which remains essentially constant. With the onset of a large amount of biological productivity at approximately 10%. salinity, there are large increases in the ratios of SiAl, PAl, CaAl, MgAl, TiAl and MnAl which are maintained at higher salinities. Calculations of “excess” concentrations of elements held in the non-terrigenous components of the suspended material further support our main conclusion that Si, P, Ca, Mg, Ti and Mn are incorporated into the skeletal and organic phases of marine phytoplankton (predominately diatoms) of the Amazon Estuary. The data suggest, but with less certainty, that Fe and K follow the above elements.This study has demonstrated that the chemical composition of river-introduced suspended matter can be significantly altered by biological activity within estuarine waters as can be the geochemical cycle of inorganic elements.  相似文献

The occurrence of pronounced climate reversals during the last glacial termination has long been recognised in palaeoclimate records from both hemispheres and from high to low latitudes. Accurate constraint of both the timing and magnitude of events, such as the Younger Dryas and Antarctic Cold Reversal, is vital in order to test different hypotheses for the causes and propagation of abrupt climate change. However, in contrast to higher‐latitude regions, well‐dated records from the Tropics are rare and the structure of late‐glacial tropical climate remains uncertain. As a step toward addressing this problem, we present an in situ cosmogenic 3He surface exposure chronology from Nevado Coropuna, southern Peru, documenting a significant fluctuation of the ice margin during the late‐glacial period. Ten tightly clustered ages from a pair of moraines located halfway between the modern glacier and the Last Glacial Maximum terminus range from 11.9 to 13.9 ka and give an arithmetic mean age of 12.8 ± 0.7 ka (1σ). These data constitute direct evidence for a readvance, or prolonged stillstand, of glaciers in the arid Andes of southwestern Peru. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper explores the palaeoclimatic significance of a fossil plant and insect record from Yarra Creek, on King Island, between Tasmania and the Australian mainland. The record dates, based upon a thermoluminescence chronology and other evidence, to Marine Isotope Stage 5 (MIS 5); the exact timing is impossible to ascertain given the resolution of the thermoluminescence results and the presence of an unconformity in the dated section. The presence of a cool-temperate rainforest flora, outside its modern range, and other independent evidence, suggest the sequence may represent the last interglacial (MIS 5e) rather than a later MIS 5 substage. Using coexistence methods that compare modern climatic ranges of the taxa in the assemblage we reconstruct independent beetle and plant based annual and seasonal temperate and precipitation parameters. The results imply the assemblage was deposited under a wetter summer climate and suggest conditions of enhanced temperature seasonality. It is probable that enhanced temperature seasonality is a methodological artefact reflecting the rarity of extremely equable climates (like King Island) in modern climate space. This would indicate a limitation of most methods of palaeoclimatic reconstruction that rely on modern datasets – it is only possible to reconstruct past climates as being within the range of values in that currently exist in modern climate space.  相似文献

Fixed nitrogen is a key nutrient involved in regulating global marine productivity and hence the global oceanic carbon cycle. Oceanic nitrogen (N2) fixation is estimated to supply 8×1012 moles N y?1 to the ocean, approximately equal to current riverine and the atmospheric inputs of fixed N, and between 50 and 100% of current estimates of oceanic denitrification. However, the spatial and temporal variability of N2 fixation remains uncertain, mostly because of the normal low resolution sampling for diazotroph distribution and fixation rates. It is well established that N2 fixation, mediated by the enzyme nitrogenase, is a source of hydrogen (H2), but the extent to which it leads to supersaturation of H2 in oceanic waters is unresolved. Here, we present simultaneous measurements of upper ocean dissolved H2 concentration (nmol L?1), and rates of N2 fixation (μmol N m?3 d?1), determined using 15N2 tracer techniques (at 7 or 15 m), on a transect from Fiji to Hawaii. We find a significant correlation (r=0.98) between dissolved H2 and rates of N2 fixation, with the greatest supersaturation of H2 and highest rates of N2 fixation being observed in the subtropical gyres at the southern (~18°S) and northern (18°N) reaches of the transect. The lowest H2 saturation and N2 fixation were observed in the equatorial region between 8°S and 14°N. We propose that an empirical relationship between H2 supersaturations and N2 fixation measurements could be used to guide sampling for 15N fixation measurements or to aid the spatial interpolation of such measurements.  相似文献

This modelling study deals with the time‐dependent behaviour of rockfill media, which is of particular interest during the life of rockfill dams. Breakage of rock blocks and crack propagation are the main processes responsible for rockfill creep and collapse. The modelling procedure presented here is performed on two scales: on the rock block scale, where the grain is taken to be an assembly of rigid particles initially endowed with cohesive bonds, and on the rockfill scale, which is taken to involve a set of breakable grains interacting via contact and friction processes. The grain breakage process is described in term of a thermodynamically consistent damage interface model, where the damage is a gradual delayed process. This model was implemented in a non‐smooth contact dynamics code. The effects of the main parameters involved were analysed by performing numerical studies. The ability of the model to predict the creep behaviour of rockfill media is confirmed by presenting several simulations. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
