Jadeitites form from hydrothermal fluids during high pressure metamorphism in subduction environments; however, the origin
of zircons in jadeitite is uncertain. We report ion microprobe analyses of δ18O and Ti in zircons, and bulk δ18O data for the jadeitite whole-rock from four terranes: Osayama serpentinite mélange, Japan; Syros mélange, Greece; the Motagua
Fault zone, Guatemala; and the Franciscan Complex, California. In the Osayama jadeitite, two texturally contrasting groups
of zircons are identified by cathodoluminescence and are distinct in δ18O: featureless or weakly zoned zircons with δ18O = 3.8 ± 0.6‰ (2 SD, VSMOW), and zircons with oscillatory or patchy zoning with higher δ18O = 5.0 ± 0.4‰. Zircons in phengite jadeitite from Guatemala and a jadeitite block from Syros have similar δ18O values to the latter from Osayama: Guatemala zircons are 4.8 ± 0.7‰, and the Syros zircons are 5.2 ± 0.5‰ in jadeitite and
5.2 ± 0.4‰ in associated omphacitite, glaucophanite and chlorite-actinolite rinds. The δ18O values for most zircons above fall within the range measured by ion microprobe in igneous zircons from oxide gabbros and
plagiogranites in modern ocean crust (5.3 ± 0.8‰) and measured in bulk by laser fluorination of zircons in equilibrium with
primitive magma compositions or the mantle (5.3 ± 0.6‰). Titanium concentrations in these zircons vary between 1 and 19 ppm,
within the range for igneous zircons worldwide. Values of δ18O (whole-rock) ≅ δ18O (jadeite) and vary from 6.3 to 10.1‰ in jadeitites in all four areas. 相似文献

Models for contaminant transport in streams commonly idealize transient storage as a well mixed but immobile system. These transient storage models capture rapid (near‐stream) hyporheic storage and transport, but do not account for large‐scale, stage‐dependent interaction with the alluvial aquifer. The objective of this research was to document transient storage of phosphorus (P) in coarse gravel alluvium potentially influenced by large‐scale, stage‐dependent preferential flow pathways (PFPs). Long‐term monitoring was performed at floodplain sites adjacent to the Barren Fork Creek and Honey Creek in northeastern Oklahoma. Based on results from subsurface electrical resistivity mapping which was correlated to hydraulic conductivity data, observation wells were installed both in higher hydraulic conductivity and lower hydraulic conductivity subsoils. Water levels in the wells were monitored over time, and water samples were obtained from the observation wells and the stream to document P concentrations at multiple times during high flow events. Contour plots indicating direction of flow were developed using water table elevation data. Contour plots of total P concentrations showed the alluvial aquifer acting as a transient storage zone, with P‐laden stream water heterogeneously entering the aquifer during the passage of a storm pulse, and subsequently re‐entering the stream during baseflow conditions. Some groundwater in the alluvial floodplains had total P concentrations that mirrored the streams' total P concentrations. A detailed analysis of P forms indicated that particulate P (i.e. P attached to particulates greater than 0·45 µm) was a significant portion of the P transport. Aquatic nonindigenous species (ANS) have dramatic impact on environmental, economic, social, cultural, and human health values in a variety of coastal, estuarine, and inland ecosystem. Despite efforts to develop biosecurity risk assessment frameworks for the improvement of ANS management, responsible agencies lack a standardized framework to identify and mitigate risk from ANS. This paper reviews the biosecurity risk assessment frameworks of seven international bodies, four regional bodies, and three countries and highlights the similarities, differences and deficiencies in their respective frameworks. Specific deficiencies found by the review include: (i) a lack of national implementation of the international and regional frameworks; (ii) gaps in ANS knowledge; (iii) insufficient guidance for various components of the risk assessment; (iv) limited number and scope of standards and measures related to ANS; and (v) inconsistent terminology between frameworks. To reduce the risk of ANS introductions, this paper concludes with a set of six recommendations to develop aquatic biosecurity risk frameworks that are both comprehensive and precautionary while also in accord with mandates established by other international bodies such as the World Trade Organization. 相似文献

The HAUSGARTEN observatory is located in the eastern Fram Strait (Arctic Ocean) and used as long-term monitoring site to follow changes in the Arctic benthic ecosystem. Linear inverse modelling was applied to decipher carbon flows among the compartments of the benthic food web at the central HAUSGARTEN station (2500 m) based on an empirical data set consisting of data on biomass, prokaryote production, total carbon deposition and community respiration. The model resolved 99 carbon flows among 4 abiotic and 10 biotic compartments, ranging from prokaryotes up to megafauna. Total carbon input was 3.78±0.31 mmol C m−2 d−1, which is a comparatively small fraction of total primary production in the area. The community respiration of 3.26±0.20 mmol C m−2 d−1 is dominated by prokaryotes (93%) and has lower contributions from surface-deposit feeding macro- (1.7%) and suspension feeding megafauna (1.9%), whereas contributions from nematode and other macro- and megabenthic compartments were limited to <1%. The high prokaryotic contribution to carbon processing suggests that functioning of the benthic food web at the central HAUSGARTEN station is comparable to abyssal plain sediments that are characterised by strong energy limitation. Faunal diet compositions suggest that labile detritus is important for deposit-feeding nematodes (24% of their diet) and surface-deposit feeding macrofauna (∼44%), but that semi-labile detritus is more important in the diets of deposit-feeding macro- and megafauna. Dependency indices on these food sources were also calculated as these integrate direct (i.e. direct grazing and predator–prey interactions) and indirect (i.e. longer loops in the food web) pathways in the food web. Projected sea-ice retreats for the Arctic Ocean typically anticipate a decrease in the labile detritus flux to the already food-limited benthic food web. The dependency indices indicate that faunal compartments depend similarly on labile and semi-labile detritus, which suggests that the benthic biota may be more sensitive to changes in labile detritus inputs than when assessed from diet composition alone. Species-specific responses to different types of labile detritus inputs, e.g. pelagic algae versus sympagic algae, however, are presently unknown and are needed to assess the vulnerability of individual components of the benthic food web. 相似文献

Discharge from karst springs contains a mixture of conduit and matrix water, but the variations in groundwater mixing are poorly known. Storm events present an opportunity to try to map flow components because water entering during storms is more dilute and provides a tracer as it mixes with pre‐event water along the flowpath from the recharge area to discharge at a spring. We used hysteresis plots of Mg/Ca ratios in a spring in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania to map conduit (higher Ca) vs. diffuse (higher Mg) sources of recharge. We observed two types of temporal heterogeneity: within a storm event and from storm to storm. The timing of the variation in Mg/Ca suggested sources of mixing waters. An increase in the Mg/Ca ratio at the beginning of some storms while conductivity declined suggested diffuse recharge through the epikarst. The rapid changes in Mg/Ca ratios for low‐intensity events probably occurred as the rainfall waxed and waned and illustrate that a variety of flowpaths are available at this spring because additional flushing of Mg occurred. In contrast, the conductivity hysteresis began with dilute water initially and rotation was similar from storm to storm. Hysteresis plots of the Mg/Ca ratio have the potential of revealing more of the complexity in discharge than conductivity alone. A better understanding of flow components in karst is needed to protect these aquifers as a groundwater resource. 相似文献

The Batu Hijau copper–gold mine on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia operates a deep-sea tailings placement (DSTP) facility to dispose of the tailings within the offshore Senunu Canyon. The concentrations of trace metals in tailings, waters, and sediments from locations in the vicinity of the DSTP were determined during surveys in 2004 and 2009. In coastal and deep seawater samples from Alas Strait and the South Coast of Sumbawa, the dissolved concentrations of Ag, As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb and Zn were in the sub μg/L range. Dissolved copper concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.65 μg/L for all depths at these sites. Dissolved copper concentrations were the highest in the bottom-water from within the tailings plume inside Senunu Canyon, with up to 6.5 μg Cu/L measured in close proximity to the tailings discharge. In general, the concentrations of dissolved and particulate metals were similar in 2004 and 2009. 相似文献

Central European lake whitefish (Coregonus spp.) colonized Swiss lakes following the last glacial retreat and have undergone rapid speciation and adaptive radiation. Up to six species have been shown to coexist in some lakes, and individual species occupy specific ecological niches and have distinct feeding and reproductive ecologies. We studied methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in sympatric whitefish species from seven Swiss lakes to determine if ecological divergence has led to different rates of MeHg bioaccumulation. In four of seven lakes, sympatric species had distinctly different MeHg levels, which varied by up to a factor of two between species. Generally, species with greater MeHg levels were smaller in body size and planktivorous, and species with lower MeHg were larger and benthivorous. While modest disparities in trophic position between species might be expected a priori to explain the divergence in MeHg, δ15N of bulk tissue did not correlate with fish MeHg in five of seven lakes. Results of a nested ANCOVA analysis across all lakes indicated that only two factors (species, lake) explained substantial portions of the variance, with species accounting for more variance (52 %) than inter-lake differences (32 %). We suggest that differences in MeHg accumulation were likely caused by diverging metabolic traits between species, such as differences in energy partitioning between anabolism and catabolism, potentially interacting with species-specific prey resource utilization. These results indicate substantial variability in MeHg accumulation between closely related fish species, illustrating that ecological speciation in fish can lead to divergent MeHg accumulation patterns. 相似文献

Abstract– We have measured the isotopic composition and fluence of solar‐wind nitrogen in a diamond‐like‐carbon collector from the Genesis B/C array. The B and C collector arrays on the Genesis spacecraft passively collected bulk solar wind for the entire collection period, and there is no need to correct data for instrumental fractionation during collection, unlike data from the Genesis “Concentrator.” This work validates isotopic measurements from the concentrator by Marty et al. (2010, 2011) ; nitrogen in the solar wind is depleted in 15N relative to nitrogen in the Earth’s atmosphere. Specifically, our array data yield values for 15N/14N of (2.17 ± 0.37) × 10?3 and (2.12 ± 0.34) × 10?3, depending on data‐reduction technique. This result contradicts preliminary results reported for previous measurements on B/C array materials by Pepin et al. (2009) , so the discrepancy between Marty et al. (2010, 2011) and Pepin et al. (2009) was not due to fractionation of solar wind by the concentrator. Our measured value of 15N/14N in the solar wind shows that the Sun, and by extension the solar nebula, lie at the low‐15N/14N end of the range of nitrogen isotopic compositions observed in the solar system. A global process (or combination of processes) must have operated in interstellar space and/or during the earliest stages of solar system formation to increase the 15N/14N ratio of the solar system solids. We also report a preliminary Genesis solar‐wind nitrogen fluence of (2.57 ± 0.42) × 1012 cm?2. This value is higher than that derived by backside profiling of a Genesis silicon collector ( Heber et al. 2011a ). 相似文献
