The physiological responses of the coral Pocillopora capitata to environmental conditions common in winter and summer were studied in 2007 during February–March (winter) and June–July (summer) at La Boquita reef (Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico). Shallow and deep sampling stations were established at different distances from a small jetty built next to the Juluapan Lagoon. We analyzed superoxide radicals () and lipid peroxidants (TBARS); the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione‐S‐transferase (GST); chlorophyll a (Chl a), zooxanthellae density (ZD); and mycosporine‐like amino acids (MAAs). Our results showed that the , TBARS, CAT, GST, MAAs, and Chl a, levels were significantly higher in summer (P < 0.05); no seasonal difference was found for GPx, GR or ZD. We found significant differences (P < 0.05) in winter only for Chl a and ZD at shallow sites and, in contrast, for at deeper sites. The results of this study indicate that increasing temperature and radiation associated with seasonal changes (from winter to summer), the efficiency of the enzymes GST, CR and GPX, and the production of MAAs together form a powerful mechanism for P. capitata to offset the detrimental effects of environmental change. 相似文献

This research continues a 7-year study of oxygen-containing organic compounds present in groundwater at gasoline and diesel fuel release sites that are quantified as diesel-range “total petroleum hydrocarbons” when measured by methods utilizing solvent extraction and gas chromatography. Two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used to tentatively identify 1162 compounds (TICs) in 113 groundwater samples from 22 sites. Samples were collected from wells either upgradient of the release, within the source zone, or downgradient of the source but still within the plume of dissolved organics associated with release. The names and formulas of all TICs found in samples from each well type are presented and the results from upgradient and downgradient locations are compared in detail. About 60% of the most frequently detected TICs in downgradient wells were also detected in upgradient wells. A majority of these were saturated straight chain alkyl acids, commonly called fatty acids, or fatty acid esters. Of TICs frequently detected in downgradient wells but not upgradient wells, over half were branched alkyl alcohols. Hierarchical cluster analysis results suggest about 80% of the chemical composition of downgradient samples is more similar to upgradient samples than to source area samples. This similarity is due to the presence of the same types of fatty acids and esters. Principal component analysis indicates a continuum of biodegradation between the source area and downgradient samples with the latter becoming more consistent with upgradient samples. Results suggest some TICs may not be petroleum degradation intermediates but compounds synthesized by microorganisms through secondary production and carbon cycling. 相似文献

Abstract. The composition and distribution of the polychaete assemblages of the San José Gulf (Chubut, Argentina) are described in relation to environmental variables using indicator species (TWINSPAN) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). The polychaetes were collected during a benthic cruise in October 1984. Sediments were collected at 110 sampling sites using a 0.25 m2 van Veen bottom grab or by divers in near-shore areas and sieved with 1 mm mesh. A total of 73 polychaete taxa were collected and identified. Both analyses revealed the presence of four main assemblages distributed according to depth as well as bivalve and seaweed abundance gradients: ' Syllis-Eunice ' and ' Harmothoe-Eunice ' assemblages occurred at the same depths (0 – 185 m) and substrata (poorly sorted rock and coarse sand), but were separated by bivalve and seaweed abundance, wherby the highest abundances of bivalves and the minimum abundances of seaweeds corresponded to the ' Syllis-Eunice ' association. The ' Ninoe-Glycera ' and ' Aglaophamus- Fabriciinae indet. 6' assemblages also occurred at similar depths (0 – 60 m) and substrata (very well-sorted medium-fine sand), but differed in their composition of bivalves and seaweed abundances; the ' Aglaophamus- Fabriciinae indet. 6' association corresponded with minimum bivalve and maximum seaweed abundances. 相似文献

The spiral arms of disk galaxies are very sensitive to various morphological properties, such as, the gas content, the disk-to-bulge
ratioetc. Here, the stability of self-gravitating annular disks surrounding the central rigid bulge component has been studied in
order to explain the transition from the tight spiral arms in Sa galaxies to rather open patterns in Sc galaxies as the central
amorphous component diminishes. Smooth spiral patterns are found associated with the dominant (or the fastest growing) modes
of the system. When the disk-to-bulge mass ratio is small, a tight pattern results restricted to the inner regions of the
disk. This pattern opens up and occupies larger disk areas as the disk component becomes comparable to the bulge. It is found
here that the ‘explosive’ instabilities of the global density waves do not occur in the presence of a massive bulge. The growth-rates
of the eigen-modes decrease as the disk-to-bulge mass ratio decreases. It is also found that unstable modes of the annular
disk can be suppressed by increasing the thermal pressure sufficiently. 相似文献

Existing methods for age estimation of open clusters are discussed. Most of the observed open clusters (except extremely young and old) contain 50–90% unevolved Main-Sequence stars. Possible difficulties encountered in estimating the actual age of an unevolved Main-Sequence star are discussed. For a relatively reliable cluster age estimation only a small percentage of cluster members are suitable. The growth of weak MHD discontinuities have been studied in a radiation induced flow field at very high temperature. Growth and decay properties of weak MHD discontinuities have been discussed under the influences of time-dependent gasdynamic field, the radiation field and the magnetic field with finite electrical conductivity. The effects of thermal radiation and conduction of the global behaviour of weak MHD discontinuities have been studied under a quasi-equilibrium and quasi-isotropic hypothesis of the differential approximation to the radiative heat transfer equation. It is shown that the existence of the time-dependent radiation field gives rise to a radiation induced wave which has a negligibly small effect on the non-relativistic flow properties of the gasdynamic field. It is also shown that the radiation stresses resist the steepening tendency of a compressive weak wave and help in stabilizing it whereas the thermal conduction effects counteracts to destabilize it. It is found that under radiation effects the shock formation is either disallowed or delayed. The two cases of diverging waves and converging waves have been studied separately to answer a particular question as to when a shock discontinuity or a coustic will be formed or disallowed under curvature effects. 相似文献

Mass segregation in the form of preferential concentration of more massive stars in the central regions of a number of open
star clusters has been known for some time. In this paper, integratedUBV colours in concentric zones have been estimated for 12 nearby open clusters using the observations of individual cluster
members. It is found that the clusters showing pronounced mass segregation also show significant radial variations in the
integrated colours. However, the effects of stochastic fluctuations around the massive portion of the mass distribution function

ABSTRACT Fanning structures radiating from a central perturbation are known in various geological environments, where different processes have produced similar geometry. The present contribution describes and analyses fanning clastic dykes in the Dead Sea Rift, a new example of diapir-related deformation. The dykes are opening-mode fractures exposed in lacustrine varved marl of the Lisan Formation, deposited 70–15 ka. They are arranged mainly in a radial and tangential geometry. The radial traces converge at the 'Black Hill' structural dome. The geometry of the fractures is consistent with stresses exerted by the rise of a salt diapir located underneath the Black Hill. The estimated extension of the radial fractures is in good agreement with the present topographic elevation of the hill. The absence of fractures in the overlying Holocene alluvium probably indicates that either the rise of the Black Hill salt diapir paused or is associated now with a different style of deformation. 相似文献
