We present the lessons learned about the degradation observed in several space solar missions, based on contributions at the Workshop about On-Orbit Degradation of Solar and Space Weather Instruments that took place at the Solar Terrestrial Centre of Excellence (Royal Observatory of Belgium) in Brussels on 3 May 2012. The aim of this workshop was to open discussions related to the degradation observed in Sun-observing instruments exposed to the effects of the space environment. This article summarizes the various lessons learned and offers recommendations to reduce or correct expected degradation with the goal of increasing the useful lifespan of future and ongoing space missions. 相似文献

We report the astronomical detections of several ammonia inversion transitions involving nonmetastable levels with energies as high s 1090 K above the ground state. The (J, K) = (9, 6) inversion transition shows maser-like emission in the directions of W51, NGC 7538, W49, and DR 21(OH). The NH3 (6, 3) line exhibits similar characteristics in W51 but is seen in absorption in NGC 7538. These are the first definite detections of ammonia masers in space. The intensities and narrow line widths (0.5-1.5 km s-1) for the emission features are in contrast to the previously detected broad, weak, nonmetastable lines attributed to thermal emission in these sources. Temporal variability appears to be evident in the (9, 6) emission in W49 over a 4 month period. The highly excited (J, K) = (9, 6) and (6, 3) ammonia lines are found in regions containing compact H II regions and strong infrared sources with associated H2O and OH masers; i.e., in regions of active star formation. 相似文献

Some of the results of an investigation into the long period behavior of the orbits of the Galilean satellites of Jupiter are presented. Special purpose computer programs were used to perform all the algebraic manipulations and series expansions that are necessary to describe the mutual interactions among the satellites.The disturbing function was expanded as a Poisson series in the modified Keplerian elements referred to a Jovicentric coordinate system. The differential equations for the modified Keplerian elements were then formed, and all short period perturbations were removed using Kamel's perturbation method. Approximate analytical solutions for these differential equations are derived, and the general form of the solutions are given. 相似文献

We calculate the spatial structure of hard X-ray emission during the impulsive phase of electron-heated solar flares. Both direct non-thermal bremsstrahlung and the thermal bremsstrahlung arising from the heated plasma are considered. Our results indicate that the spread of non-thermal emission into the upper parts of the loop, through evaporation of the chromospheric target, may be more important than the appearance of a hot thermal source in the corona. The effects of varying the viewing angle to the flare loop, and of finite-size resolution element, are also considered, and we compare our results with observations from the Solar Maximum Mission Hard X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer. The thermodynamic basis of several recent attempts to formulate a simple two-feldspar geothermometer is discussed, together with a review of earlier empirical geothermometers and ones based on experimental studies in the ternary feldspar system. It is shown that double-binary thermometers which involve the combination of regular solution mixing models for the binary alkali feldspar system with ideal mixing in plagioclases do not give a satisfactory representation of two-feldspar relations, especially for albite-rich compositions where a critical point exists. Thermometers based on mixing parameters for ordered alkali feldspar frameworks are even more unjustified both because low-plagioclases are certainly non-ideal, and because of uncertainty in knowing the degree of Al-Si order in the alkali feldspar when exchange equilibrium was achieved. A thermodynamic thermometer requires knowledge of ternary activities which are at present unknown.Experimental determinations of relationships in the ternary feldspar system are reviewed and the correct general form of the thermometer constructed using mainly the experimental data of Seck (1971a) and Smith and Parsons (1974). Chemographic tests for equilibrium between feldspar pairs are suggested and petrographie features discussed.In an appendix new values are given of Margules parameters calculated for binary disordered alkali feldspars from recent solvus data up to 15 kbars, and their physico-chemical basis examined. We suggest that accurate representations of the mixing properties of disordered alkali feldspars using Margules parameters are at present premature. 相似文献

We present the results of the application of the G-mode method to the spectral classification of the icy satellites of the giant planets. G-mode is a multivariate statistical technique for the classification of samples depending on many variables. Here this method is tested on the infrared spectra acquired by the Cassini/VIMS instrument onboard the Cassini spacecraft. This work demonstrates the suitability of automatic spectral classification methods for the study of fair resolution spectra, such as those from VIMS. Our data set is composed by two different kinds of data: observations of point targets (Galilean satellites data) and observations with medium spatial resolution (Phoebe data). In both situations, the G-mode classification performed well. In the first case, of a large number of subpixel observations of the Galilean satellites, through the G-mode it was possible to find statistically meaningful spectral groups of observations. In the case of Phoebe, of some spatially resolved observations, the G-mode classification of␣the infrared spectra of the surface led to several types, dominated by the different illumination geometry of the pixels, because, due to the irregular shape of the satellite, a proper illumination correction was not trivial to apply. Nevertheless, the decrease of the confidence level of the test as well as the re-application of the G-mode on the main type found, led to further types, whose statistical distance can be related to different chemical abundances. We plan to use the G-mode also on the data coming from ongoing and future observations of the icy Saturnian satellites.In the helioseismology literature, G-modes are gravity wave modes of the frequencies of oscillations of the Sun. Past river classifications use incommensurate typologies at each spatial scale and do not capture the pivotal role of topographic variability at each scale in driving the morphodynamics responsible for evolving hierarchically nested fluvial landforms. This study developed a new way to create geomorphic classifications using metrics diagnostic of individual processes the same way at every spatial scale and spanning a wide range of scales. We tested the approach on flow convergence routing, a geomorphically and ecologically important process with different morphodynamic states of erosion, routing, and deposition depending on the structure of nondimensional topographic variability. Five nondimensional landform types with unique functionality represent this process at any flow; they are nozzle, wide bar, normal channel, constricted pool, and oversized. These landforms are then nested within themselves by considering their longitudinal sequencing at key flows representing geomorphically important stages. A data analysis framework was developed to answer questions about the stage‐dependent spatial structure of topographic variability. Nesting permutations constrain and reveal how flow convergence routing morphodynamics functions in any river the framework is applied to. The methodology may also be used with other physical and biological datasets to evaluate the extent to which the patterning in that data is influenced by flow convergence routing.
