In July of 2005, the Deep Impact mission collided a 366 kg impactor with the nucleus of Comet 9P/Tempel 1, at a closing speed of 10.2 km s−1. In this work, we develop a first-order, three-dimensional, forward model of the ejecta plume behavior resulting from this cratering event, and then adjust the model parameters to match the flyby-spacecraft observations of the actual ejecta plume, image by image. This modeling exercise indicates Deep Impact to have been a reasonably “well-behaved” oblique impact, in which the impactor-spacecraft apparently struck a small, westward-facing slope of roughly 1/3-1/2 the size of the final crater produced (determined from initial ejecta plume geometry), and possessing an effective strength of not more than . The resulting ejecta plume followed well-established scaling relationships for cratering in a medium-to-high porosity target, consistent with a transient crater of not more than 85-140 m diameter, formed in not more than 250-550 s, for the case of (gravity-dominated cratering); and not less than 22-26 m diameter, formed in not less than 1-3 s, for the case of (strength-dominated cratering). At , an upper limit to the total ejected mass of 1.8×107 kg (1.5-2.2×107 kg) is consistent with measurements made via long-range remote sensing, after taking into account that 90% of this mass would have stayed close to the surface and then landed within 45 min of the impact. However, at , a lower limit to the total ejected mass of 2.3×105 kg (1.5-2.9×105 kg) is also consistent with these measurements. The expansion rate of the ejecta plume imaged during the look-back phase of observations leads to an estimate of the comet's mean surface gravity of (0.17-0.90 mm s−2), which corresponds to a comet mass of mt=4.5×1013 kg (2.3-12.0×1013 kg) and a bulk density of (200-1000 kg m−3), where the large high-end error is due to uncertainties in the magnitude of coma gas pressure effects on the ejecta particles in flight. 相似文献

The third EGRET catalog contains a large number of unidentified sources. This subset of objects is expected to include known gamma-ray emitters of Galactic origin such as pulsars and supernova remnants, in addition to an extragalactic population of blazars. However, current data allows the intriguing possibility that some of these objects may represent a new class of yet undiscovered gamma-ray sources. Many theoretically motivated candidate emitters (e.g. clumps of annihilating dark matter particles) have been suggested to account for these detections. We take a new approach to determine to what extent this population is Galactic and to investigate the nature of the possible Galactic component. By assuming that galaxies similar to the Milky Way should host comparable populations of objects, we constrain the allowed Galactic abundance and distribution of various classes of gamma-ray sources using the EGRET data set. We find it is highly improbable that a large number of the unidentified sources are members of a Galactic halo population, but that a distribution of the sources entirely in the disk and bulge is plausible. We present results of our pulsar population synthesis of normal and millisecond pulsars in the Galactic plane. Over the past
several years, a program has been developed to simulate pulsar birth, evolution and emission using Monte Carlo techniques.
We have added to the program the capability to simulate millisecond pulsars, which are old, recycled pulsars with extremely
short periods. We model the spatial distribution of the simulated pulsars by assuming that they start with a random kick velocity
and then evolve through the Galactic potential. We use a polar cap/slot gap model for γ-ray emission from both millisecond and normal pulsars. From our studies of radio pulsars that have clearly identifiable core
and cone components, in which we fit the polarization sweep as well as the pulse profiles in order to constrain the viewing
geometry, we develop a model describing the ratio of radio core-to-cone peak fluxes. In this model, short period pulsars are
more cone-dominated than in our previous studies. We present the preliminary results of our recent study and the implications
for observing these pulsars with GLAST and AGILE.

Abstract– We present results of a numerical model of the dynamics of ejecta emplacement on asteroid 433 Eros. Ejecta blocks represent the coarsest fraction of Eros’ regolith and are important, readily visible, “tracer particles” for crater ejecta‐blanket units that may be linked back to specific source craters. Model results show that the combination of irregular shape and rapid rotation of an asteroid can result in markedly asymmetric ejecta blankets (and, it follows, ejecta block spatial distribution), with locally very sharp/distinct boundaries. We mapped boulder number densities in NEAR‐Shoemaker MSI images across a portion of a predicted sharp ejecta‐blanket boundary associated with the crater Valentine and confirm a distinct and real ejecta‐blanket boundary, significant at least at the 3‐sigma level. Using our dynamical model, we “back track” the landing trajectories of three ejecta blocks with associated landing tracks in an effort to constrain potential source regions where those blocks were ejected from Eros’ surface in impact events. The observed skip distances of the blocks upon landing on Eros’ surface and the landing speeds and elevation angles derived from our model allow us to estimate the coefficient of restitution, ε, of Eros’ surface for impacts of 10‐m‐scale blocks at approximately 5 m s?1 impact speeds. The observed spin periods of the primaries in intermediate polars require the presence of torques additional to the standard expectation of material and magnetic torques from an accretion disc. In an extension of earlier work by Wickramasinghe, Wu and Ferrario, from rates of mass transfer deduced from optical and X-ray fluxes, and assuming surface magnetic fields similar to those observed in the most rapidly rotating low mass main sequence stars, it is shown that the magnetohydrodynamic torque between the partially shielded primary and the secondary is sufficient to account for the observed spin periods. It is further found that there is a range of magnetic moments and mass transfer rates in which synchronized rotation of the primary can occur even though it possesses an accretion disc. This may account for the structures deduced for V795 Her and V2051 Oph.An analysis of the observed outbursts (or lack of) in the intermediate polars shown that wheres many systems are explainable in terms of the standard theory of -discs, in some systems the magnetic structure is supressing expected outbursts and instabilities that are as yet not understood appear in their place. 相似文献
