The earthquake response of Pine Flat Dam is examined by a study of time history responses computed for a large set of earthquake ground acceleration records whose time axes have been systematically varied. Linear elastic behaviour is assumed. Topics considered include an investigation of the importance of the presence of water, water compressibility and the vertical component of ground motion; an evaluation of the accuracy of the lumped, added mass representation of the water; and a determination of the intensity of earthquake required to initiate non-linear behaviour in both the dam and water.  相似文献

On the basis of detailed geological mapping in the Talea Ori of Crete, metamorphic rocks previously interpreted as basement to the Plattenkalk Series are re-interpreted as down-faulted parts of the overlying Phyllite-Quartzite Series nappe. A supposed unconformity separating these two units is shown to be a high-angle fault. The Phyllite-Quartzite Series and overlying nappes were affected by two major deformational phases, whereas the Plattenkalk Series has a simpler structural history and was folded and imbricated by southwards-directed overthrusting which emplaced the Phyllite-Quartzite Series nappe and other overlying nappes in the Oligocene. We reject previous models of a huge inversion of the Plattenkalk Series and we also consider that considerable local inversion by tight to isoclinal folding and thrusting means that the stratigraphic thickness is much less than previously appreciated. The differences between the structural and sedimentological histories of the Plattenkalk Series and the overlying nappes implies that they were separated by a major crustal discontinuity, such as a transform or transcurrent fault, before the Oligocene overthrusting.  相似文献

A detailed oxygen and carbon isotope record has been obtained from benthic Foraminifera in core V19-30 from the Carnegie Ridge on the south side of the Panama Basin. Expressing these records and the oxygen and carbon isotope records previously published for Atlantic core M-12392 on a common timescale, it is apparent that the oxygen isotope records are very similar but that the carbon isotope records are quite different. By obtaining the carbon isotope gradient between the two sites as a function of time we show that the production of North Atlantic Deep Water has varied over a wide range during the late Pleistocene, and that the pattern of variation is not simply related to the well known oxygen isotope record. Although the two oxygen isotope records are very similar, changes in the interoceanic gradient are detectable and support the hypothesis that in the glacial mode the North Atlantic was colder, and less oxygenated, than it is today.Shackleton's [1] 1977 interpretation whereby the carbon isotope record from the Atlantic core reflects changes in the terrestrial biomass, is an over-simplification. However, the record from the Pacific core V19-30 probably can be explained in these terms since it probably approximates the carbon isotope record of global mean oceanic dissolved CO2.  相似文献

Snow-albedo feedback (SAF) is examined in 25 climate change simulations participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project version 5 (CMIP5). SAF behavior is compared to the feedback’s behavior in the previous (CMIP3) generation of global models. SAF strength exhibits a fivefold spread across CMIP5 models, ranging from 0.03 to 0.16 W m?2 K?1 (ensemble-mean = 0.08 W m?2 K?1). This accounts for much of the spread in 21st century warming of Northern Hemisphere land masses, and is very similar to the spread found in CMIP3 models. As with the CMIP3 models, there is a high degree of correspondence between the magnitudes of seasonal cycle and climate change versions of the feedback. Here we also show that their geographical footprint is similar. The ensemble-mean SAF strength is close to an observed estimate of the real climate’s seasonal cycle feedback strength. SAF strength is strongly correlated with the climatological surface albedo when the ground is covered by snow. The inter-model variation in this quantity is surprisingly large, ranging from 0.39 to 0.75. Models with large surface albedo when these regions are snow-covered will also have a large surface albedo contrast between snow-covered and snow-free regions, and therefore a correspondingly large SAF. Widely-varying treatments of vegetation masking of snow-covered surfaces are probably responsible for the spread in surface albedo where snow occurs, and the persistent spread in SAF in global climate models.  相似文献

Natural resource planning at all scales demands methods for assessing the impacts of resource development and use, and in particular it requires standardized methods that yield robust and unbiased results. Building from existing probabilistic methods for assessing the volumes of energy and mineral resources, we provide an algorithm for consistent, reproducible, quantitative assessment of resource development impacts. The approach combines probabilistic input data with Monte Carlo statistical methods to determine probabilistic outputs that convey the uncertainties inherent in the data. For example, one can utilize our algorithm to combine data from a natural gas resource assessment with maps of sage grouse leks and piñon-juniper woodlands in the same area to estimate possible future habitat impacts due to possible future gas development. As another example: one could combine geochemical data and maps of lynx habitat with data from a mineral deposit assessment in the same area to determine possible future mining impacts on water resources and lynx habitat. The approach can be applied to a broad range of positive and negative resource development impacts, such as water quantity or quality, economic benefits, or air quality, limited only by the availability of necessary input data and quantified relationships among geologic resources, development alternatives, and impacts. The framework enables quantitative evaluation of the trade-offs inherent in resource management decision-making, including cumulative impacts, to address societal concerns and policy aspects of resource development.  相似文献

We test the reliability of helioseismic far-side active-region predictions, made using Dopplergrams from both the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG), by comparison with far-side observation of solar activity from the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO). Both GONG and HMI produce seismic Carrington maps that show strong magnetic-field regions, labeling predictions of far-side active regions that have a probability ≥?70 %. By visual comparison of these prediction maps with STEREO extreme ultraviolet (EUV) Carrington maps, we determine whether or not solar activity, as evidenced as brightness in EUV, is observed at the predicted locations. We analyzed nine months of data from 2011 and 2012. For both GONG and HMI, we find that for approximately 90 % of the active-region predictions, activity/brightness is observed in EUV at the predicted location. We also investigated the success of GONG and HMI at predicting large active regions before they appear at the east limb as viewed from Earth. Of the 27 identified large east-limb active regions in the nine months of data analyzed, GONG predicted 15 (55 %) at least once within the week prior to Earth-side appearance and HMI predicted 13 (48 %). Based on the STEREO far-side EUV observations, we suggest that 9 of the 27 active regions were probably too weak to be predicted while on the far side. Overall, we conclude that HMI and GONG have similar reliability using the current data-processing procedures.  相似文献

Changes in wintertime 10 m winds due to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation are examined using a 6 km resolution climate simulation of Southern California covering the period from 1959 through 2001. Wind speed statistics based on regional averages reveal a general signal of increased mean wind speeds and wind speed variability during El Niño across the region. An opposite and nearly as strong signal of decreased wind speed variability during La Niña is also found. These signals are generally more significant than the better-known signals in precipitation. In spite of these regional-scale generalizations, there are significant sub-regional mesoscale structures in the wind speed impacts. In some cases, impacts on mean winds and wind variability at the sub-regional scale are opposite to those of the region as a whole. All of these signals can be interpreted in terms of shifts in occurrences of the region’s main wind regimes due to the El Niño phenomenon. The results of this study can be used to understand how interannual wind speed variations in regions of Southern California are influenced by the El Niño phenomenon.  相似文献

The Tiegelongnan Cu (Au) deposit is the largest copper deposit newly discovered in the Bangong–Nujiang metallogenic belt. The deposit has a clear alteration zoning consisting of, from core to margin, potassic to propylitic, superimposed by phyllic and advanced argillic alteration. The shallow part of the deposit consists of a high sulphidation‐state overprint, mainly comprising disseminated pyrite and Cu–S minerals such as bornite, covellite, digenite, and enargite. At depth porphyry‐type mineralization mainly comprises disseminated chalcopyrite, bornite, pyrite, and a minor vein molybdenite. Mineralization is disseminated and associated with veins contained within the porphyry intrusions and their surrounding rocks. The zircon U–Pb ages of the mineralized diorite porphyry and granodiorite porphyry are 123.1 ± 1.7 Ma (2σ) and 121.5 ± 1.5 Ma (2σ), respectively. The molybdenite Re–Os age is 121.2 ± 1.2 Ma, suggesting that mineralization was closely associated with magmatism. Andesite lava (zircon U–Pb age of 111.7 ± 1.6 Ma, 2σ) overlies the ore‐bodies and is the product of post‐mineralization volcanic activity that played a critical role in preserving the ore‐bodies. Values of ?4.6 ‰ to + 0.8 ‰ δ34S for the metal sulfides (mean ? 1.55 ‰) suggest that S mainly has a deep magmatic source. The H and O isotopic composition is (δD = ?87 ‰ to ?64 ‰; δ18OH2O = 5.5 ‰ to 9.0 ‰), indicating that the ore‐forming fluids are mostly magmatic‐hydrothermal, possibly mixed with a small amount of meteoric water. The zircon εHf(t) of the diorite porphyry is 3.7 to 8.3, and the granodiorite porphyry is 1.8 to 7.5. Molybdenite has a high Re from 382.2 × 10?6 to 1600 × 10?6. Re and Hf isotope composition show that Tiegelongnan has some mantle source, maybe the juvenile lower crust from crust–mantle mixed source. Metallogenesis of the Tiegelongnan giant porphyry system was associated with intermediate to acidic magma in the Early Cretaceous (~120 Ma). The magma provenance of the Tiegelongnan deposit has some mantle‐derived composition, possibly mixed with the crust‐derived materials.  相似文献
