Debates over the merits and demerits of globalisation for health are increasingly polarised. Conclusions range from globalisation being essentially positive for health, albeit with a need to smooth out some rough edges, to one of utter condemnation, with adverse effects on the majority of the world's population. Anyone wading into this debate is immediately confronted by seemingly irreconcilable differences in ideology, opinion and interests. Both camps agree that global changes are occurring, and with them many of the determinants of population health status. While some skepticism persists about whether “globalisation” has value beyond being a fashionable buzzword, most agree that we need better understanding of these changes. Two difficult questions arise: (i) What are the health impacts of these changes; and (ii) how can we respond more effectively to them? To move beyond the stand-offs that have already formed within the health community, this paper reviews the main empirical evidence that currently exists, summarises key points of debate that remain, and suggests some ways forward for the research and policy communities. In particular, there is need for an informed and inclusive debate about the positive and negative health consequences of globalisation.  相似文献

Turbulent flow in a model plant canopy   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
An array of slender, vertical, cylindrical rods was used in a wind tunnel to simulate a plant canopy. Turbulence measurements were made with a cross hot wire, both inside and above the canopy. Measurements were also made inside the canopy when its top was covered by boards, leaving no space above the rods. This artificially confined canopy provided reference data.The results show an exponential wind profile and constant turbulence intensity, skewness and mixing length along the height of the (unconfined) canopy, the contribution of the eddies shed by the rods to the turbulence observed inside the canopy was small, but clearly apparent.  相似文献

Urban hailstorms are rarely studied in detail. This work documents five urban storms in Alberta where damage has, on three occasions, set the record for Canada's most costly natural disaster. Information from newspapers, insurance companies, and disaster assistance programs was utilized to supplement meteorological records and information obtained from public surveys.The record-breaking hail swath which accompanied the 1987 Edmonton tornado was mapped using over 800 responses to an unprecedented newspaper survey. Tennis ball sized hail struck 125 km2 of the city. Record-sized hailstones for Alberta were collected. Citizens' measurements of giant hailstones were compared to laboratory measurements. The rural storms were tracked using lightning detector information and damage was mapped using crop insurance and disaster assistance claims. The tornado-bearing storm was found to have a unique track.A late-season hailstorm which struck Calgary in 1991 was mapped using homeowner insurance claims organized by postal areas. Nine out of thirty areas had claims rates exceeding 50%, mainly for shingle replacement. Experiences of claims adjustors and an informal public survey were also utilized. Rural storms were mapped using weather radar and crop losses. The radar beam was strongly attenuated when it passed through hail-bearing storms and, thus, its ability to detect large hail was compromised.Weather conditions, urban and rural damaged areas, and insurance payments were compared for all five local hailstorms. These storms were discussed within the context of the long history of Alberta hail research and current trends in technology implementation. Forecasting of these hailstorms using conventional severe weather indicators was difficult in Calgary because of that city's proximity to the mountains. Hailstorms that struck Munich, Denver, and Toowoomba (Australia) were also discussed, and the hailstones collected from the great Munich storm were compared to those collected from the Edmonton storms.  相似文献

A Canadian perspective of the petrographic, thermal rheological and grade of metallurgical coals required to make coke with high strength and strength after reaction (CSR) properties is presented. The development of automated microscopic techniques to obtain reproducible and reliable petrographic data to predict coke quality is discussed. The amount of “altered vitrinite” in the microscopic coke textures has been used as a reference to quantifiy in situ coal oxidation. Relationships between coke microscopy, coal petrography and thermal rheological data show that FSI can be used to estimate the amount of oxidized vitrinite plus petrographic inert contents of coal. Plastic temperature ranges determined from microscopic examination of the coal/coke transformations for Appalachian and Canadian coals show that standard thermal rheological tests underestimate the plastic range for high inertinite coals.  相似文献

In this paper we develop a classification system for small headwater streams predicated upon an understanding of the dominant physical processes acting in the channel and its basin, and the conditions under which these processes operate. The variables used to build the classification are hillslope gradient, valley width as compared to channel width, channel gradient, channel depth and sediment size. Using physical laws and morphologic relationships, we recognize domains in which various processes dominate. Channels within the same process domain can be expected to behave in a similar manner in transporting sediment and water and responding to and recovering from basin disturbance, therefore we use the domains to recognize distinct channel types. This classification system provides the foundation for building an approach for identifying basins and streams that are comparably sensitive to landuse.  相似文献

A fiber-optic microphobe was used to analyze the spectral light gradients in benthic cyanobacterial mats with 50-micrometer depth resolution and 10-nm spectral resolution. Microcoleus chthononplastes mats were collected from hypersaline, coastal ponds at Guerrero Negro, Baja California. Gradients of spectral radiance, L, were measured at different angles through the mats and the spherically integrated scalar irradiance, Eo, was calculated. Maximal spectral light attenuation was found at the absorption peaks for the dominant photosynthetic pigments: chlorophyll a at 430 and 670 nm, carotenoids at 450-500 nm, phycocyanin at 620 nm, and bacteriochlorophyll a at 800-900 nm. Scattered light had a marked spectral effect on the scalar irradiance which near the mat surface reached up to 190% of the incident irradiance. The spherically integrated irradiance thus differed strongly from the incident irradiance both in total intensity and in spectral composition. These basic optical properties are important for the understanding of photosynthesis and light harvesting in benthic and epiphytic communities.  相似文献
