Interpretation of Transient ElectroMagnetic (TEM) data and wire-line logs has led to the delineation of an intricate pattern of buried tunnel valleys, along with new evidence of glaciotectonically dislocated layers in recessional moraines in the central part of Vendsyssel, Denmark. The TEM data have been compared with recent results of stratigraphical investigations based on lithological and biostratigraphical analyses of borehole samples and dating with Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon. This has provided an overview of the spatial distribution of the late Quaternary lithostratigraphical formations, and the age of the tunnel valleys has been estimated. The tunnel valleys are typically 5–10 km long, 1 km wide and are locally eroded to depths of more than 180 m b.s.l. The valleys are interpreted to have been formed by subglacial meltwater erosion beneath the outermost part of the ice sheet during temporary standstills and minor re-advances during the overall Late Weichselian recession of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet. The formation of the tunnel valleys occurred after the retreat of the Main ice advance c . 20 kyr BP and before the Lateglacial marine inundation c . 18 kyr BP. Based on the occurrence of the tunnel valleys and the topography, four ice-marginal positions related to the recession of the northeastern Main advance and seven ice-marginal positions related to the recession from the following eastern re-advance across Vendsyssel are delineated. All the tunnel valleys were formed within a time interval of a few thousand years, giving only a few hundred years or less for the formation of the tunnel valleys at each ice-marginal position.  相似文献

We report the occurrence of unusual, high-magnesium (Fo96) olivinephenocrysts in a basaltic lava and an ejected lithic block fromthe Upper Vancori period (13 ka) and the recent activity (2002–2003)of Stromboli volcano, Italy. The samples that contain this distinctivemineral chemistry are a shoshonitic basalt and a basaltic andesitewith anomalous bulk-rock chemical characteristics in which theiron is highly oxidized (6–8 wt % Fe2O3 and <1 wt %FeO). In other respects these samples are similar to the majorityof Stromboli basalts, characterized by the coexistence of olivine,clinopyroxene, plagioclase and Fe–Ti oxides as phenocrysts,and clinopyroxene, plagioclase and Fe–Ti oxides in thegroundmass. In the high-magnesium olivine samples, Fe–Tioxides (pseudobrookite) typically occur as symplectitic intergrowthswith the olivine phenocrysts, indicating simultaneous growthof the two phases. We propose, as a paragenetic model, thatthe Fo96 olivine phenocrysts crystallized from a highly oxidizedbasaltic magma in which most of the iron was in the ferric state;hence, only magnesium was available to form olivine. The highlyoxidized state of the magma reflects sudden degassing of volatilephases associated with instantaneous, irreversible, transientdegassing of the magma chamber; this is postulated to occurduring periods of sudden decompression induced by fracturingof the volcanic edifice associated with paroxysmic activityand edifice collapse. Komatiites from the 2 Ga Jeesiörova area in Finnish Laplandhave subchondritic Al2O3/TiO2 ratios like those in Al-depletedkomatiites from Barberton, South Africa. They are distinct inthat their Al abundances are higher than those of the Al-depletedrocks and similar to levels in Al-undepleted komatiites. Moderatelyincompatible elements such as Ti, Zr, Eu, and Gd are enriched.Neither majorite fractionation nor hydrous melting in a supra-subductionzone setting could have produced these komatiites. Their highconcentrations of moderately incompatible elements may haveresulted from contamination of their parental melt through interactionwith metasomatic assemblages in the lithospheric mantle or enrichmentof their mantle source in basaltic melt components. Re–Osisotope data for chromite from the Jeesiörova rocks yieldan average initial 187Os/188Os of 0·1131 ± 0·0006(2), Os(I) = 0·1 ± 0·5. These data, coupledwith an initial Nd of +4, indicate that melt parental to thekomatiites interacted minimally with ancient lithospheric mantle.If their mantle source was enriched in a basaltic component,the combined Os–Nd isotopic data limit the enrichmentprocess to within 200 Myr prior to the formation of the komatiites.Their Os–Nd isotopic composition is consistent with derivationfrom the contemporaneous convecting upper mantle. We investigated size-resolved submicrometre aerosol particle number and volume concentration time series as well as aerosol dynamic parameters derived from Differential Mobility Particle Sizer (DMPS) measurements at five background stations in the Nordic boreal forest area. The stations in question were Aspvreten, Hyytiälä and Utö in southern Finland and Sweden, and Värriö and Pallas in the Finnish Lapland. The objective of our investigation was to identify and quantify annual and interannual variation observable in the time series. We found that the total number and mass concentrations were much lower at the Lapland stations than at the southern stations and that the total particle number was strongly correlated to particle formation event frequency. The annual total number concentration followed the annual distribution of particle formation events at the southern stations but much less clearly at the Lapland stations. The volume concentration was highest during summer, in line with higher condensation growth rates; this is in line with the assumption that a large part of the particle volume is produced by oxidized plant emissions. The decrease of sulphate emissions in Europe was not visible in our data set. Aerosol dynamic parameters such as condensation sink, condensation sink diameter and the power law exponent linking coagulation losses and condensation sink are presented to characterize the submicron Nordic background aerosol.  相似文献

Abstract

From 1967 until 1986, uranium mine dewatering increased dissolved gross alpha, gross beta, uranium and radium activities and dissolved selenium and molybdenum concentrations in the Puerco River as indicated by time trends, areal patterns involving distance from the mines and stream discharge. Additionally, increased dissolved uranium concentrations were identified in groundwater under the Puerco River from where mine discharges entered the river to approximately the Arizona-New Mexico State line about 65 km downstream. Total mass of uranium and gross alpha activity released to the Puerco River by mine dewatering were estimated as 560 Mg (560 × 106 g) and 260 Ci, respectively. In comparison, a uranium mill tailings pond spill on 16 July 1979, released an estimated 1.5 Mg of uranium and 46 Ci of gross alpha activity. Mass balance calculations for alluvial ground water indicate that most of the uranium released did not remain in solution. Sorption of uranium on sediments and uptake of uranium by plants probably removed the uranium from solution.  相似文献

Field evidence from intrusive and effusive carbonatites supportsthe existence of calciocarbonatite magmas. Published experimentalevidence in the model system Na2O–CaO–Al2O3–SiO2–CO2indicated the formation of nearly pure (99%) CaCO3 immiscibleliquids from a carbonated silicate liquid. This evidence hasbeen used to support interpretations of extremely CaCO3-richcalciocarbonatite magmas, and immiscible liquids with compositionsof almost pure CaCO3 in metasomatized mantle peridotite andeclogite. Detailed phase relationships are constructed in themodel system, based on phase fields intersected by the joinNaAlSi3O8–CaCO3 (Ab-CC) at 1.0, 1.5, and 2.5 GPa between1100 and 1500C, and analyzed immiscible liquids. The miscibilitygap between silicate-rich liquid and carbonate-rich liquid intersectedby the join Ab-CC contracts considerably with decreasing pressure:2.5 GPa, between Ab10CC90 (by wt%) and Ab65CC35 above 1310C;1.5 GPa, betweenAb23CC77 and Ab43CC57 above 1285C; 1.0 GPa,not intersected. The liquidus piercing point between calciteand silicates becomes enriched in CaCO3 with decreasing pressure,from Ab80CC20 at 2.5 GPa to Ab47CC53 at 1.0 GPa. No immiscibleliquid contains more than 80% dissolved CaCO3, and all containat least 5% Na2CO3. A round CaCO3 phase exhibiting morphologysimilar to that displayed by immiscible liquid globules is determinedto be crystalline calcite under experimental conditions. Thetopology of the phase fields and field boundaries illustratesthe kinds of processes and controls existing in magmatic systems.Calciocarbonatite magmas cannot be produced by equilibrium immiscibilityprocess in the mantle. Carbonated silicate magmas in the crustyield residual calciocarbonatite magmas by fractionation alongthe silicate-calcite field boundary, reached either directlyfrom the silicate liquidus or more commonly via the miscibilitygap. Immiscible carbonaterich magmas when freed from the silicateparent cool down a sleep silicate liquidus until they reacha silicate-carbonate field boundary. There is no experimentalevidence for immiscible calciocarbonatite magmas with > 80%CaCO3, and calcite lapilli cannot be formed from 99% CaCO3 magmas.Sovites are surely cumulates. New Pb, Sr and Nd isotope data from volcaniclastic sedimentsrecovered from the Tonga forearc and Lau Basin permit the isotopicevolution of a section of this arc system, next to the modernisland of Ata, to be traced through the backarc basin riftingprocess from 7.0 Ma to the present. The new data suggest thatthe isotopic character of the mantle wedge remains constant,and of Pacific mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) character, duringthe early rifting phase. The isotopic evidence supports traceelement data in showing an increase in the sediment contributionto arc petrogenesis about 2–3 m.y. after the start ofLau Basin rifting. Since 0.45 Ma the sediment contribution decreasedto pre-rift values with the initiation of spreading in the adjacentbackarc basin, where the high sediment influence is not seenin the isotopes. The isotopes show a relative increase in thevolcaniclastic compared with pelagic sediment involvement duringrifting. The inferred peak in sediment subduction is probablythe result of a decoupling of the two plates owing to roll-backof the Pacific lithosphere at the time of arc rifting. Both high- and medium-pressure granulites have been found asenclaves and boudins in tonalitic–trondhjemitic–granodioriticgneisses in the Hengshan Complex. Petrological evidence fromthese rocks indicates four distinct metamorphic assemblages.The early prograde assemblage (M1) is preserved only in thehigh-pressure granulites and represented by quartz and rutileinclusions within the cores of garnet porphyroblasts, and omphacitepseudomorphs that are indicated by clinopyroxene + sodic plagioclasesymplectic intergrowths. The peak assemblage (M2) consists ofclinopyroxene + garnet + sodic plagioclase + quartz ±hornblende in the high-pressure granulites and orthopyroxene+ clinopyroxene + garnet + plagioclase + quartz in the medium-pressuregranulites. Peak metamorphism was followed by near-isothermaldecompression (M3), which resulted in the development of orthopyroxene+ clinopyroxene + plagioclase symplectites and coronas surroundingembayed garnet grains, and decompression-cooling (M4), representedby hornblende + plagioclase symplectites on garnet. The THERMOCALCprogram yielded peak (M2) P–T conditions of 13·4–15·5kbar and 770–840°C for the high-pressure granulitesand 9–11 kbar and 820–870°C for the medium-pressuregranulites, based on the core compositions of garnet, matrixpyroxene and plagioclase.
