An approximate carbon budget for the Sierra Leone River Estuary and adjacent inner continental shelf indicates that phytoplankton production is balanced by grazers only in the wet season estuary; on the continental shelf, and in the dry season estuary, phytoplankton production exceeds demand of consumer populations by 70–90%. Regional production is dominated by the dry season estuary where diatom blooms support large population of the phytophagous clupeid fish Ethmalosa fimbriata. It is suggested that as well as what is used in bacterial respiration, not quantified in the study, important amounts of inshore organic carbon production are available for export, or burial, or both, either in inshore mudbanks or at the shelf edge by slumping. This carbon budget for a tropical continental shelf having neither coral-reefs nor coastal upwelling appears to correspond with what is emerging as a generic distinction between shelves and open ocean ecosystems: surplus production on shelves, balance between producers and consumers in the open ocean. 相似文献

A high-resolution Fourier spectrum (1.7–3.5 μm) and medium-resolution spectrophotometry (2.7–4.2 μm) were obtained for Asteroid 1 Ceres. The presence of the 3-μm absorption feature due to water of hydration was confirmed. The 3-μm feature is compared with the 3-μm bands due to water of hydration in clays and salts. It is concluded that the spectrum of Ceres shows a strong absorption at 2.7–2.8 μm due to structural OH groups in clay minerals. The dominant minerals on the surface of Ceres are therefore hydrated clay minerals structurally similar to terrestrial montmorillonites. There is also a narrow absorption feature at 3.1 μm which is attributable to a very small amount of water ice on Ceres. This is the first evidence for ice on the surface of an asteroid. 相似文献

The contact zone at the base of the Waulsortian (Upper Tournaisian) carbonate mud‐bank complex in western Ireland has been investigated at four localities spaced over a distance of 120 km. At all localities, a transition facies up to 3 m thick, characterized by several types of grumous (clotted and/or peloidal) carbonate muds, immediately underlies the Waulsortian facies. These muds show a developmental sequence provisionally interpreted as a necessary precursor to the formation of Waulsortian polymuds. Such pre‐bank precursors produced thin (a few decimetres) units of transition facies. The same mud types also persisted as an aureole around growing banks (mud‐mounds). Migration of the aureole during bank progradation produced thicker units of transition facies. The distribution of skeletal grain types in the Waulsortian banks, the transition facies and the ‘background’ argillaceous bioclastic limestones show two trends: one regional and one local. The regional trend is expressed by progressive north–south attenuation and, in some cases (for example, plurilocular foraminifera), the disappearance of organism groups. It parallels changes in Waulsortian Phases (defined by skeletal grain‐type assemblages) and is thought to indicate a southerly increase in water depth. The local trend, which occurs only in the two southern localities (deeper water), expresses differences between the skeletal grain content of the various lithofacies. These differences result partly from increased sensitivity to substrate texture by organism groups suffering southward attenuation (notably gastropods, hyalosteliid sponges, aoujgaliids, Earlandia and kirkbyacean ostracods) and partly from selective colonization, particularly of the transition facies, by tabulate corals and stick/ramose bryozoans. However, the developmental sequence of precursor carbonate muds is the same at all localities, indicating that the mud‐making process (probably microbial) was independent of water depth. 相似文献

This article examines the nature and timing of U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI) in the London legal market. Evidence from a survey of thirty–eight U.S. subsidiaries suggests that FDI has taken place primarily to serve U.S. clients located within the United Kingdom. The evidence also suggests that early investors (pre–1990) belong to a core group of multinational companies with headquarters located in first–tier U.S. cities (New York, Chicago, Los Angeles). Later investors more typically hail from smaller cities. The evidence reveals a number of important differences between early versus late investors. Specifically, subsidiaries that were established prior to 1990 are more likely to enjoy local decision–making autonomy than are their counterparts that entered the London market more recently. The article concludes with a brief discussion of the implications of the survey findings for future research on FDI in professional services. 相似文献

Calculated univariant equilibria and oxygen isotope compositions of silicates and carbonates support the proposal that the “Mottled Zone Event” is a low-pressure (1–25 atm), high-temperature (200° < T < 1300°C) metamorphism of calcareous siliceous sediments in which the thermal energy is provided by combustion of organic matter. δ18O of silicates decreases systematically with increasing metamorphic grade from averages of 18.1‰ in protolith shales, to 16.6‰ in grossular-diopside-zeolite rocks, 15.6‰ in wollastonite and anorthite-diopside-gehlenite-grossular fels, 14.1‰ in spurrite-brownmillerite marbles and 11.7‰ in the highest-grade larnite-gehlenite-brownmillerite assemblages. Decarbonation is the principal mechanism influencing the oxygen isotope compositions. The progressive decrease of δ18O in silicates can be modelled as a Rayleigh distillation of CO2 approximately 16‰ enriched in 18O relative to whole rock assemblages i.e., of initial isotopic composition 8.5‰ heavier than the parent carbonates. The mineral assemblage of one sample with an unusual granoblastic texture is in apparent isotopic equilibrium at a temperature of 540°C. 相似文献

A latitudinally dependent annual average volcanic dust veil index is developed based on indices of Lamb and Mitchell. This index is then used to force a climate model to determine if an improved volcanic index could improve the correlations previously found when forcing the model with hemispherically averaged dust. A size-continuous breakage-kinetics model is postulated and supported with industrial grinding-mill data. It is shown that the kinetics parameters include the effects of possible classification at the mill discharge. The estimated parameters were then used in the kinetics model to simulate the behavior of a grinding mill in open- and closed-circuit operation. While material transport and kinetics are equally important in open-circuit operation, heavy recycle in a closed circuit makes a detailed material-transport model for grinding unnecessary. In effect, the mill can be considered as backmixed. This suggests that more emphasis should be placed on modelling the classifier than the development of detailed material-transport models for the grinding mill. 相似文献

First-order drainage basin morphology consists of two complementary regions: a headwater region, the valley head; and a stream region, the channelway (Figure 1). Each subbasin's morphology is represented by a set of principal components factors that include the properties of area, length, slope, relief, elongation, and plan curvature. The channelway region is a highly-integrated morphological unit that is dominated by a size-shape factor, indicative of an organized flow system and the presence of a permanent channel. The valley head region shows little integration of its morphological factor set, and this is reflected by its lack of a permanent channel. The valley head-channelway definition is utilized to classify first-order basins into three morphological groups or types. Basin type is related to basin location within the larger drainage network, and this relation helps to explain variations in subbasin morphology. The channelway's morphologic properties are influenced by the location of the first-order basin's bifurcation or junction within the higher-ordered network; and valley head morphology is related to the location of the basin's divide position within the drainage net. 相似文献
