Hazards associated with tropical cyclones are long-duration rotatory high-velocity winds, very heavy rain and storm tide. India has a coastline of about 7,516?km of which 5,400?km is along the mainland. The entire coast is affected by cyclones with varying frequency and intensity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is the nodal government agency that provides weather services related to cyclones in India. However, IMD has not identified cyclone-prone districts following any specific definition though the districts for which cyclone warnings are issued have been identified. On the other hand, for the purpose of better cyclone disaster management in the country, it is necessary to define cyclone proneness and identify cyclone-prone coastal districts. It is also necessary to decide degree of hazard proneness of a district by considering cyclone parameters so that mitigation measures are prioritised. In this context, an attempt has been made to prepare a list of cyclone hazard prone districts by adopting hazard criteria. Out of 96 districts under consideration, 12, 45, 31 and 08 districts are in very high, high, moderate and low categories of proneness, respectively. In general, the coastal districts of West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are more prone and are in the high to very high category. The cyclone hazard proneness factor is very high for the districts of Nellore, East Godawari, and Krishna in Andhra Pradesh; Yanam in Puducherry; Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur in Orissa; and South and North 24 Parganas, Medinipur and Kolkata in West Bengal. The results give a realistic picture of degree of cyclone hazard proneness of districts, as they represent the frequency and intensity of land falling cyclones along with all other hazards like rainfall, wind and storm surge. The categorisation of districts with degree of proneness also tallies with observed pictures. Therefore, this classification of coastal districts based on hazard may be considered for all the required purposes including coastal zone management and planning. However, the vulnerability of the place has not been taken into consideration. Therefore, composite cyclone risk of a district, which is the product of hazard and vulnerability, needs to be assessed separately through detailed study.  相似文献

The present study sets out to investigate the sensitivity of water availability to climate change for a large western Himalayan river (the Satluj River basin with an area of 22 275 km2 and elevation range of 500 to 7000 m), which receives contributions from rain, snow and glacier melt runoff. About 65% of the basin area is covered with snow during winter, which reduces to about 11% after the ablation period. After having calibrated a conceptual hydrological model to provide accurate simulations of observed stream flow, the hydrological response of the basin was simulated using different climatic scenarios over a period of 9 years. Adopted plausible climate scenarios included three temperature scenarios (T + 1, T + 2, T + 3 °C) and four rainfall scenarios (P ? 10, P ? 5, P + 5 and P + 10%). The effect of climate change was studied on snowmelt and rainfall contribution runoff, and total stream flow. Under warmer climate, a typical feature of the study basin was found to be reduction in melt from the lower part of the basin owing to a reduction in snow covered area and shortening of the summer melting season, and, in contrast, an increase in the melt from the glacierized part owing to larger melt and an extended ablation period. Thus, on the basin scale, reduction in melt from the lower part was counteracted by the increase from melt from upper part of the basin, resulting in a decrease in the magnitude of change in annual melt runoff. The impact of climate change was found to be more prominent on seasonal rather than annual water availability. Reduction of water availability during the summer period, which contributes about 60% to the annual flow, may have severe implications on the water resources of the region, because demand of water for irrigation, hydropower and other usage is at its peak at this time. The Bhagirathi River, a proglacial melt water stream of the Gangotri Glacier, is the principal source of the Ganges river system. The upper part of the basin lies in the high altitude region of the Garhwal Himalayas and is extensively covered by glaciers. We provide hydro‐meteorological insight into a severe storm that produced unusual high rains in June 2000 in the uppermost part of the Bhagirathi River. This storm was concentrated upstream of Gangotri town and triggered landslides/rockslides at several locations between the glacier snout and Gangotri town. One of the major rockslides blocked the Bhagirathi River at Bhujbas, about 3 km downstream of the Gangotri Glacier snout, creating an artificial lake at this location. High stream flow in the river, generated by rapid runoff response from mountain slopes along with melt runoff from the glacier, quickly increased the level of water stored in the artificial lake. Daily rainfall in this region rarely exceeds 10 mm, while total rainfall during this 6‐day storm was 131·5 mm. This unusual rain event occurred during the tourist season in June, consequently trapping a large number of tourists and vendors in this area. Sudden release of stored water generated floods that created havoc downstream of the artificially created lake. This paper presents the hydrological and meteorological information related to such an unusual and devastating event observed in the high altitude region of the Himalayas. In the following paper, certain black hole dynamic potentials have been developed definitively on the lines of classical thermodynamics. These potentials have been refined in view of the small differences in the equations of the laws of black hole dynamics as given by Bekenstein and those of thermodynamics. Nine fundamental black hole dynamical relations have been developed akin to the four fundamental thermodynamic relations of Maxwell. The specific heats C ??,?? and C J,Q have been defined. For a black hole, these quantities are negative. The ??dA equation has been obtained as an application of these fundamental relations. Time reversible processes observing constancy of surface gravity are considered and an equation connecting the internal energy of the black hole E, the additional available energy defined as the first free energy function K, and the surface gravity ??, has been obtained. Finally as a further application of the fundamental relations, it has been proved for a homogeneous gravitational field in black hole space times or a de Sitter black hole that $C_{\Omega ,\Phi } -C_{J,Q} =\kappa \left[ {\left( {\frac{\partial J}{\partial \kappa }} \right)_{\Omega ,\Phi } \left( {\frac{\partial \Omega }{\partial \kappa }} \right)_{J,Q} +\left( {\frac{\partial Q}{\partial \kappa }} \right)_{\Omega ,\Phi } \left( {\frac{\partial \Phi }{\partial \kappa }} \right)_{J,Q} } \right]$ . This is dubbed as the homogeneous fluid approximation in context of the black holes.  相似文献

This is the second paper of the series on the influence of the atmospheric water vapour (WV) on IRS NIR measurements. In the first paper (Pandya et al. 2011) a simulation study was presented where through the radiative transfer calculations it was shown that the variation of 0 to 6 g/cm2 in the WV hampered the IRS NIR reflectance up to 14%. In that study splitting of IRS NIR (0.770–0.860 μm) into two bands, such as NIR1 (0.775–0.805 μm) and NIR2 (0.845–0.875 μm) was also proposed, which facilitated a considerable improvement in NIR reflectance as well as in NDVI. Objective of the present paper is to validate the findings of simulation study with the use of EO1-Hyperion data. An improvement of the order of 7% in the top-of-atmosphere reflectance over vegetation target was obtained from the satellite data analysis, which is in good agreement to that of simulation results (3.7 to 7.9%) for the continental WV conditions of 1 to 3 g/cm2. This is also true for NDVI values, which illustrated a good agreement between the satellite observations (2.5%) and simulation results (2 to 4.6%) for the magnitude of improvement. Findings of the present study are preliminary in the nature but it provides a basis for enhanced NIR observations for future IRS sensors.  相似文献

The spatio-temporal changes in sedimentation rate along the continental margin of the monsoon-dominated eastern Arabian Sea during the last 24 kyr have been estimated from a compilation of 58 radiocarbon dated cores, in order to understand the effect of glacial-interglacial variation on sedimentation. The sedimentation rate has been computed for four-time slices, viz. the last glacial maximum, glacial-interglacial transition, early Holocene and late Holocene. We report that the average sedimentation rate in the slope to the abyssal region of the entire eastern Arabian Sea, although higher during the Holocene as compared with that during the last glacial maximum and glacial-interglacial transition, does not significantly vary during all four-time intervals. The sedimentation rate during any particular time interval, however, varies from core to core, thus indicating zonal changes. We report four zones of relatively high sedimentation rate, viz. the northeastern Arabian Sea, the region off the Gulf of Khambhat, the region off Goa and Mangalore, and off the southern tip of India. We suggest that a complex interaction of land-ocean-atmospheric processes controlled sedimentation rate in the eastern Arabian Sea during the last 24 kyr in such a way that the average sedimentation rate does not vary significantly, even during highly contrasting climatic conditions.  相似文献

The temporal evolution of pressure in solar coronal loops is studied using the ideal theory of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in cylindrical geometry. The velocity and the magnetic fields are expanded in terms of the Chandrasekhar-Kendall (C-K) functions. The three-mode representation of the velocity and the magnetic fields submits to the investigation of chaos. When the initial values of the velocity and the magnetic field coefficients are very nearly equal, the system shows periodicities. For randomly chosen initial values of these parameters, the evolution of the velocity and the magnetic fields is nonlinear and chaotic. The consequent plasma pressure is determined in the linear and nonlinear regimes. The evidence for the existence of chaos is established by evaluating the invariant correlation dimension of the attractorD 2, a fractal value of which indicates the existence of deterministic chaos.  相似文献
