The North Atlantic craton in southern West Greenland mainly consists of a tectonic collage of Mesoarchean continental crustal terranes, which were amalgamated at c. 2.7 Ga and are currently exposed at mid-crustal amphibolite to granulite facies levels. Tonalitic orthogneisses predominate, intercalated with slightly older tholeiitic to andesitic metavolcanic rocks and associated gabbro-anorthosite intrusive complexes. The North Atlantic craton also contains enclaves of Eoarchean, c. 3.86-3.6 Ga orthogneisses and supracrustal rocks including the Isua greenstone (or supracrustal) belt. This is the oldest known assemblage of rocks deposited at the surface of the Earth, comprising mafic pillow lavas, banded iron formations and metasedimentary schists with local disseminated graphite of possible biogenic origin. Eoarchean rocks have not been found in Kola and Karelia in Fennoscandia where most rocks are 2.9-2.7 Ga tonalitic-trondhjemitic-granodioritic orthogneisses with intercalated coeval greenstone belts and amphibolites. Mesoarchean 3.0-3.2 Ga rocks are found in the eastern and western parts of the Karelian province. Subduction-related rocks like the Iringora supra-subduction type ophiolite and basalt-andesite-dacite-rhyolite series volcanic rocks in many greenstone belts, as well as eclogites are found in the Archean of Fennoscandia. A clear distinction between Greenland and Fennoscandia is the abundance of 2.75-2.65 Ga igneous rocks in Fennoscandia which indicates that these two cratons had a separate evolution during the Neoarchean. 相似文献

This study addresses the long-term trends in heat-related mortality across 29 US metropolitan areas from 1975 to 2004 to discern
the spatial patterns and temporal trends in heat vulnerability. Mortality data have been standardized to account for population
trends, and seasonal and interannual variability. On days when a city experienced an “oppressive” air mass, mean anomalous
mortality was calculated, along with the likelihood that oppressive days led to a mortality response at least one standard
deviation above the baseline value. Results show a general decline in heat-related mortality from the 1970s to 1990s, after
which the decline seems to have abated. The likelihood of oppressive days leading to significant increases in mortality has
shown less of a decline. The number of oppressive days has stayed the same or increased at most metropolitan areas. With US
homes near saturation in terms of air-conditioning availability, an aging population is still significantly vulnerable to

The present study aims to test the application of remote sensing to address the impact of bioturbation on physical sediment
properties. Therefore, a laboratory experiment was developed, using microcosms mimicking a marine intertidal water–sediment
interface to test the influence of Corophium volutator densities on sediment properties. Three main variables (water content, clay content, and mean grain size) were measured in
three treatments (no Corophium, 5,000 Corophium per square meter, and 20,000 Corophium per square meter) after 16 days of bioturbation. Results obtained with conventional—destructive—techniques showed a significant
increase of water content and a significant, but small decrease of clay content in the presence of Corophium. The remote sensing technique detected the impact of Corophium on water content as an increase in absorption at 1,450 nm, but was not able to detect the animal impact on clay content.
This study demonstrates that remote sensing data could be significantly modified by bioturbation activities and that remote
sensing can be applied in the laboratory to address the impact of bioturbation on sediment properties. This possibly opens
new perspectives for long-term experiments concerning the role of bioturbation on sedimentary processes. 相似文献

In this paper, the static load plate test and the dynamic load plate test by means of the light falling weight device are
assessed utilizing numerical simulations. Simplified computational models of the tested subsoil and of the testing devices
are developed, which capture the main effects of both the static and the dynamic load plate test. In extensive parametric
studies, the impact of various subsoil conditions on the test results and several sources of error are evaluated and discussed.
Computational test results of the static load plate test and of the dynamic load plate test are set in contrast to an effort

Submarine canyons are conduits for the distribution of sediment across continental margins. Although many canyons connect directly with fluvial or marine littoral system feeders, canyons detached from direct hinterland supply are also recognized. The fill of detached canyons remains enigmatic, because their deep‐water setting restricts analysis of their evolution and stratigraphic architecture. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the sedimentary processes that infilled deep‐water canyons and the resulting architecture. Miocene outcrops of an exhumed deep‐water system from the East Coast Basin, New Zealand, are documented and compared with the morphology and seismic scale architecture of a modern detached canyon system on the same convergent margin. The outcropping system preserves the downstream margin of a sub‐basin deposited at palaeo‐water depths >700 m. A 6 km wide by 430 m deep incision is filled by heterogeneous siliciclastic sediments, 50% of which comprise graded thin‐beds with traction structures, interpreted to result from oscillatory flows. These are intercalated with concave‐up lenses, up to 15 m thick, of sigmoidally‐bedded, amalgamated sandstones, which preserve ripple casts on bed bases, interpreted as deposits at the head of a deep‐marine canyon. Palaeo‐flow was eastward, into the sub‐basin margin. On the adjacent margin of the sub‐basin down‐dip, stacked and amalgamated sandstones and conglomerates represent the fill of a submarine channel complex, at least 3 km wide. The channels are inferred to have been fed by the up‐dip canyon, which traversed the intervening structural high; similar relationships are seen in the bathymetry data. Seismic studies on this margin demonstrate that multiple phases of canyon cut and fill may occur, with downstream architectural evolution comparable to that seen at outcrop, demonstrating that detached canyons may act as sediment conduits. Breaching of developing sea‐floor structures by detached canyons can modify tortuous sediment pathways, supplying sediment to otherwise starved areas of the slope. 相似文献

The Licensing Act (2003) was enacted in England and Wales against the backdrop of media concern about 'binge Britain' and violent town centres avoided by 'social drinkers'. This paper responds to these concerns by asking how to create more inclusive urban centres at night. Findings from focus groups found it was not alcohol consumption or a reluctance to partake in urban life that was detracting residents. We present a new orbit for the visual binary ADS 8630 = γ Vir. Although it is one of the first visual double stars discovered, its orbital elements were still poorly known. Indeed the very high eccentricity of the orbit and the difficulty of observing the pair at periastron passage in 1836 has meant that it is only now that sufficient measures of the recent close approach in 2005 have allowed an orbital analysis which predicts the angular motion to an acceptable degree of accuracy. We present a series of 35 speckle measurements of ADS 8630 obtained with PISCO in Merate between 2004 and 2006. Those measures have been crucial for determining the new orbital elements since they cover an arc of 130 degrees in the apparent orbit and include the periastron passage of 2005. The masses of the individual F0V components of the binary are found to be 1.40 M⊙ with an accuracy of about 3%. We also investigate in detail the possibility of the presence of a third body in the system, that was proposed by other authors. The high‐angular resolution infra‐red image of γ Vir that we obtained in June 2006 with the LuckyCam instrument on the ESO NTT shows the absence of any companion as faint as a M0V star at a distance larger than 0.4″. Combined with the analysis of the residuals of our orbit, the values found for the masses of the individual components and the radial velocity measurements, this observation rules out the presence in the system of a third companion with a mass larger than 0.3 M⊙. The German Wadden Sea (southern North Sea) sediments are composed of both cohesive and non-cohesive deposits. The spatial
distribution patterns are mainly driven by wind-induced waves and tidal currents. Transport intensity and duration depend
on the hydrodynamic conditions, which vary over time. In this paper, the transport of suspended sediment was investigated
on seasonal, tidal and hourly time scales in the back-barrier system of Spiekeroog Island. Long- and short-term data of fair
weather periods and two storm events were investigated based on stationary and mobile measurements of currents and waves by
Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), in situ particle size and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) measurements by
laser in situ scattering and transmissometry (LISST) as well as wind records. The ADCP backscatter intensities were calibrated
by means of LISST volume concentration data in order to quantify longer term SSCs and fluxes in the back-barrier system. Values
up to 120 mg l−1 were recorded, but concentrations more commonly were below 60 mg l−1. The long-term results confirm former observations of a balanced budget during low-energy (fair weather) conditions in the
study area. In general, SSCs were higher during spring tides than during neap tides. The data also clearly show the remobilisation
of sediment by tidal current entrainment. The records include two severe storm events, “Britta” (1st November 2006) and “Kyrill”
(18th January 2007). The data reveal very complex temporal flow and transport patterns. During both storm events, the export
of material was mainly controlled by the interaction of wind, waves and tidal phase. The typical ebb-dominance occurring during
fair-weather conditions was temporarily neutralised and even reversed to a flood-dominated situation. During “Kyrill”, the
wind and high-waves setup in conjunction with the tidal phase was even able to compress the duration of two successive ebb
cycles by over 70%. Although SSCs increased during both storms and higher turbulence lifted particle clouds upwards, an export
of suspended matter towards the North Sea was only observed under the conditions taking place during “Britta”. Such fluxes,
however, are currently still difficult to quantify because the backscatter intensity during high energy events includes a
substantial amount of noise produced by the high turbulence, especially near the water surface. 相似文献

Comparison of short-term seacliff retreat measurement methods in Del Mar, California 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Seacliff retreat has been variously characterized as the recession rate of the cliff top, of the cliff base, and as the bulk recession rate based on volumetric changes of the entire cliff face. Here, these measures of retreat are compared using nine semi-annual airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) surveys of southern California seacliffs. Changes in the cliff base location (where the steeply sloping cliff face intersects the beach) include cliff retreat owing to basal erosion, but also reflect changes in beach sand level and basal talus deposits. Averaged over the 2.5 km alongshore study span, the cliff base actually prograded seaward about 12 cm during the 4-year study. Cliff top change was dominated by few, relatively large (several meters) localized retreats. Cliff face changes, that include failures and deposits anywhere on the cliff profile, had a relatively small mean magnitude compared to cliff top changes and were more widely distributed alongshore. However, the similar alongshore averaged, cumulative cliff top and net bulk cliff face end-point retreat (14 and 19 cm, respectively) suggest that mean cumulative cliff top retreat can potentially be a viable surrogate for mean net cumulative cliff-wide erosion (and vice versa) over relatively short time periods. Cliff face erosion occurred repeatedly at some locations, confirming the presence of seacliff erosion hot-spots during the study period. 相似文献
