We present X-ray, broad-band optical and low-frequency radio observations of the bright type IIP supernova SN 2004et. The Chandra X-ray Observatory observed the supernova at three epochs, and the optical coverage spans a period of ∼470 d since explosion. The X-ray emission softens with time, and we characterize the X-ray luminosity evolution as L X ∝ t −0.4 . We use the observed X-ray luminosity to estimate a mass-loss rate for the progenitor star of ∼2 × 10−6 M⊙ yr−1 . The optical light curve shows a pronounced plateau lasting for about 110 d. Temporal evolution of photospheric radius and colour temperature during the plateau phase is determined by making blackbody fits. We estimate the ejected mass of 56 Ni to be 0.06 ± 0.03 M⊙ . Using the expressions of Litvinova & Nadëzhin we estimate an explosion energy of (0.98 ± 0.25) × 1051 erg . We also present a single epoch radio observation of SN 2004et. We compare this with the predictions of the model proposed by Chevalier, Fransson & Nymark. These multiwavelength studies suggest a main-sequence progenitor mass of ∼20 M⊙ for SN 2004et. 相似文献

We present the results of a comparative study of the intranight optical variability (INOV) characteristics of radio-loud and
radioquiet quasars, which involves a systematic intra-night optical monitoring of seven sets of high luminosity AGNs covering
the redshift rangez ≃ 0.2 toz ≃ 2.2. The sample, matched in the optical luminosity—redshift(M
B—z) plane, consists of seven radio-quiet quasars (RQQs), eight radio lobedominated quasars (LDQs), five radio core-dominated
quasars (CDQs) and six BL Lac objects (BLs). Systematic CCD observations, aided by a careful data analysis procedure, have
allowed us to detect INOV with amplitudes as low as about 1%. Present observations cover a total of 113 nights (720 hours)
with only a single quasar monitored as continuously as possible on a given night. Considering the cases of only unambiguous
detections of INOV we have estimated duty cycles (DCs) of 17%, 12%, 20% and 61% for RQQs, LDQs, CDQs, and BLs, respectively.
The much lower amplitude and DC of ESfOV shown by RQQs compared to BLs may be understood in terms of their having optical
synchrotron jets which are modestly misdirected from us. From our fairly extensive dataset, no general trend of a correlation
between the INOV amplitude and the apparent optical brightness of the quasar is noticed. This suggests that the physical mechanisms
of INOV and long term optical variability (LTOV) do not have a one-to-one relationship and different factors are involved.
Also, the absence of a clear negative correlation between the INOV and LTOV characteristics of blazars of our sample points
toward an inconspicuous contribution of accretion disk fluctuations to the observed INOV. The INOV duty cycle of the AGNs
observed in this program suggests that INOV is associated predominantly with the highly polarized optical emission components.
We also report new VLA imaging of two RQQs (1029 + 329 & 1252 + 020) in our sample which has yielded a 5 GHz detection in
one of them (1252 + 020;S

Bhaga Basin has complex mountainous terrain; little study has been done on the spatial and temporal characteristics of snow cover in the region. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 8-day snow cover products between 2001 and 2012 for winter period (November–April) have been used to study the variation in snow cover area (SCA). The statistical analysis based on non-parametric Mann Kendall and Sen’s slope methods have been used for detecting and estimating trends for climatic variables (temperature and snowfall) and SCA for winter period. Results of statistical analysis indicate rise in minimum temperature (0.02 °C year?1) and fall in maximum temperature (0.17 °C year?1). It also shows decrease in mean seasonal snowfall (0.07 cm year?1). The seasonal SCA was found to decrease at the rate of 0.002% year?1. Detailed knowledge about the estimates and spatial patterns of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) stocks is fundamental for sustainable land management and climate change mitigation. This study aimed at: (1) mapping the spatial patterns, and (2) quantifying SOC and TN stocks to 30 cm depth in the Eastern Mau Forest Reserve using field, remote sensing, geographical information systems (GIS), and statistical modelling approaches. This is a critical ecosystem offering essential services, but its sustainability is threatened by deforestation and degradation. Results revealed that elevation, silt content, TN concentration, and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager band 11 explained 72% of the variability in SOC stocks, while the same factors (except silt content) explained 71% of the variability in TN stocks. The results further showed that soil properties, particularly TN and SOC concentrations, were more important than that other environmental factors in controlling the observed patterns of SOC and TN stocks, respectively. Forests stored the highest amounts of SOC and TN (3.78 Tg C and 0.38 Tg N) followed by croplands (2.46 Tg C and 0.25 Tg N) and grasslands (0.57 Tg C and 0.06 Tg N). Overall, the Eastern Mau Forest Reserve stored approximately 6.81 Tg C and 0.69 Tg N. The highest estimates of SOC and TN stocks (hotspots) occurred on the western and northwestern parts where forests dominated, while the lowest estimates (coldspots) occurred on the eastern side where croplands had been established.
